I dunno, I don't keep track of the rumor mill so if it's going to come out soon then yes I would maybe wait.

Yeah, but dude, how can you start offering up "bargain" $500 lens suggestions, when the most expensive lens he currently has is under $100?

Sure, its cheap to you, but under $100 to $500 is a pretty big step for most of us, and one that i havent taken myself yet. Hell my most expensive lens is barely half that. For those of us with very limited resources, some of those lenses just arent an option for a long time. I think its a good way to have something to cover the ranges in the interim.

Anyway, just my 2 cents.

I think if hes going to use video later on, he should just save up a littel more and go for a used or refurbed 7D. But if he keeps going down that road, his little $100 upgrade could easily snowball into thousands, lol.

you're saying he should not spend $500 on a lens that could last him forever, yet he should spend around $1000 on a body that will be out dated in less than 5 years?

you invest in lenses, you upgrade to bodies as you see fit.

the game you play when buying the lens that will get you by for $250 means that when you get to the point where you want the $500 lens you'll have ended up spending more than $500 for it. You won't be able to sell your $250 lens for whatever it originally cost you, so you end up spending more money overall.

You could argue the same for spending $2500 for the latest 70-200 f/2.8 IS lens from canon, but IMO the step up in optical improvement between your less than $100 vivitar lens and the $500 f/4 canon is MUCH LARGER than the step up in improvement between the f/4 and new f/2.8 version of the canon lens.

not to mention the fact that the $500 lens gets you AF, accurate metering though the body, better build quality and arguably better optical quality.

I don't feel like beating a dead horse here, but I also can't abide bad advice.

Lol at the fuckfest this turned into. It's obvious I'm having fun and doing well with what I've got, so why fix what isn't broke?

If I add to my lenses, I can later buy a body that will take even better advantage of those lenses, and hopefully get a prosumer body for much cheaper by then!

The XS has served me well, and I continue to make a tiny bit of $ and to have a blast doing it.

Fuck the gear whoring, fuck the haters \:\)

You're good.

The nifty fifty is my favorite lens to use. The build quality is , but that adds to the charm.

You never know when a smoking deal or some extra cash may come along.

If financially limited, upgrade when you're actually limited by what the camera can do (like, shots you physically cannot take because of a technical limitation), not for a slight upgrade in PQ or ergonomics or whatever. I mean really, what would you be doing to where you'd absolutely need a pixel-perfect 12-megapixel image? Or a magnesium body? Those are wants, which are a luxury if you can just freely throw cash it.

And yeah, lenses are huge. The best part about lenses is that in 5 years they will sell for the exact same price it does nowadays.

The rebel XS shoots 1.5 fps in JPG with 5 shot maximum. All other rebels are 3-4 fps with 99 shot buffer, then a 50D is around 6 fps, etc. If he's doing rolling shots for paying clients... an increase from one-shot mode is way more than a luxury.

I realize this little exercise in what if is over. Just wanted to clarify why I think the XXD series would be ideal, since the question was raised.

10-4 on lenses. I cringed at first, but they should be 2/3 of your budget IMO.

And no, there is no valid excuse for that.

Just using it as a reference for the speed of the shutter motors in the bodies.

No need to get all with the 's

edit -I think we're all kinda saying the same thing, but just in case-

Good luck. Remember that other members on the site use canon gear and are known to upgrade frequently...

I've never shot in anything but raw. And I never need to burst shot rollers either. I don't just lay on the shutter button , and hope to get lucky, especially because if you're doing 35mph on a road, the light can change, fast. I usually snap off 4-5 shots, will adjust, so on and so forth. That way, after about 20 shots, I get 5-6 keepers, and I'm good.

to me, a faster lens is more important in rolling shots than an FPS burst.

my body sucks, I've already made the decision to step up around christmas. Im going to set aside what I can, and make the leap in december or jan to a 50d.

FTW!

I'd love to have a 70-200 F/4 (preferably IS) by then, but I don't see it happening.

Its funny too, because as much as I want the long lens, I'd also LOVE a Tamron 10-24mm. They are cheap, optically sharper than the canon 10-22 and they are relatively cheap (475 or so) but I couldn't ever justify having THREE lenses and not having anything longer than 55mm.

Although If i picked up a 50d Kit i'd get the 28-135mm, and If I bought the Tamron 10-24mm and had the 50mm f/1.8 that would be a PRETTY solid lineup of lenses for automotive shooting and I'd be covered right up to 135 solidly. I could pick up the 70-200F/4 at a later date and then I'd be FULLY covered up to 200mm

That sounds ideal to me.

Ditch the Rebel XS and Canon 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6IS

Canon 50D
Tamron SP AF 10-24mm F3.4-4.5 Di-II6
Canon 50mm F/1.8 II
Canon 18-135mm F/3.5-5.6IS
By January

Then LATER Add the
Canon 70-200 F/4 IS

Then later i'll add the 50mm f/1.8.

Let me give you a little more advice...the 50mm f/1.8 was a cool lens to buy. Hell, it was $100. It's fast, great bokeh, etc. But on a crop body, I find it to be a little "lacking". It's not quite wide enough, and not quite long enough...hell, it's too "normal" IMO. It's the least used lens in my bag. I actually can't remember the last time I used it.

You like to shoot wider than longer. You can get a Tokina 11-16 for around $450-500 on craigslist, the Tamron 17-50 for around $350-400 and the Canon 70-200 for around $450-500. You'd have fast, quality glass all around and be set for years to come. Those variable aperture lenses are not going to be as optically good, especially an 18-135.

THe only reason I mentioned the 18-135 was because its the kit lens on the D50.

I wouldn't go out of my way to buy it.

The tamron 10-24mm actually beat out the tokina 11-16 on IQ in the last comparo I read, and it's around the same price, though having somethng fixed aperture would be a different ball game.

The tamron 17-50 would be a great fixed aperture replacement for the kit lens I have now though, thanks, thats a good piece of advice.

I'm pretty sure the Tokina is the best buy at this point. I like Tamron lenses, but only a small handful. That 10-24 would probably get quite annoying with the variable aperture before you started pixel peeping the IQ.

I'm pretty sure my list above would solve all your issues and provide you years of enjoyment.

fwiw, i didn't like my 50mm on my xsi, but really like it on my 5d2.

that said, my 1.4 gives some nasty CA now and then, more often at wider apertures.

don't worry...even the $2000 85/1.2II gives terrible CA wide open. happens on strong light/dark contrasting edges all the time.

5d Classic Vs 7d at ISO1600.

In this thread on fredmiranda http://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/820707/0

The general consensus seems to be that the IQ on the 5d is mindblowing, but that the 7d is much more versatile and much more a pleasure to use.

The 5d is just too slow for me me thinks. The 50d seems solid as hell, but the improvement from the brand new autofocus system (fucking 9 point autofocus in the 50d to 19 in the fucking 7d!) may be worth the extra money...

I need to see what kind of price I could get for the 7d with canon loyalty discount on a refurb kit.

AF points? Yeah, I think I have 51 of those per body.

Nikon rools!!!!!

Except maybe when you're manually selecting a focus point and you have to click through dozens of them to get from one side of the frame to the other (you can reduce your choices, but I'm not brave enough for that).

*edit* I can't imagine putting up with noise at ISO 1600 though, that would suck.

cheers,
scott

So the more and more I look at it, I realize that the 5D is much to slow for my desires, and that the 50D is partially outshadowed by the T2i.

I really want to go 7D, but the price makes me cringe. I can get body only for 1100 shipped from the canon loyalty program, but assuming my Rebel is sold, that leaves me with just a 50mm II lens. Obviously not what I want.

My parents have said they will get me the Tokina 11-16 for christmas, though I can't find it used anywhere, and everywhere that sells it new for $599 is currently out of stock!!!

So what lens could I get for 300 or less that would be a good mid-range lens on the 7d if I were to get it? If I get the 7d and the Tokina 11-16 I'll have the ultra-wide covered, and the fast prime angle convered with the 50mm II, so do I try to find a tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 used cheap? Or maybe look for the canon 28-135 (The kit lens that would come with the 7d...

Thoughts?

And If I bail on the very-expensive 7d, should I spend 1k on a 50d Kit, or does the fact that a rebel (the t2i) exists for the same money, and some additional features make the 50d an obsolete choice? Despite being over the rebel line... the 50d and t2i are both the same price, and the 50d only really holds its weight over the t2i with its build construction, and it's speed.

Have you talked yourself into a circle? You mention in your re-edit first post the t2i is tonka quality and you want something fast (the t2i is faster than your current rebel and the 5d but not by much at around 3.9fps) but now you're looking at it again.

I've read this thread from the beginning and maybe I've read it too much but I can't tell what you want. What helped me decide on my first DSLR was writing down what I want, then I ordered the list (top preference to bottom), then I looked at all the cameras again. If I made the list now about 6 months into my DSLR usage the list order would definitely change and I think that's where you're at.

Make a list, order it, and the post it. The two things I notice you seem to care about most are speed and cost.

Its not so much that I'm considering the t2i as an option to purchase, but more against the fact of "does it really make sense to buy a 50d when there's a rebel that so closely rivals it?"

Yes the 50d is quite a bit faster, and built better, which are both things that I would prefer, but really the fact that a rebel is competing with an old prosumer again, makes me want to just go with the 7d.

Unfortunately, being as poor as I am, I can't afford to buy a 7d AND go nuts on lenses, and being that $1100 will get me a 7d body from the canon loyalty program, I was just considering to myself what lens I should purchase to compliment and supplement an ultra wide angle, and a 50mm Prime with.

You are correct: Speed, decent autofocus, and bang for my buck are my primary concerns, but I don't want to be upgrading my body again in a year...

dude, i agree that the 7D can be very worth it, especially for your purposes.

Have you held and shot with one yet?

I would say that the 17-50mm 2.8 tamron is FAR more versatile than the tokina. Yeah the tokina is a great lens, and probably even more applacable for you since you love your auto photography, but do you think you could get by on your first 6 months to a year with the camera with just a 17-50mm 2.8 and the 50mm 1.8? Maybe add a throw away long zoom like a cheapie 70-300mm if you need the length until you can afford better?

I say do it. Troll your CL like no tommorow and see if you can find a used, also troll jr, adorama etc... for refurb units.
