I'm still trying to reduce underhood temps, so I decided it was time for heat extractor hood. Problem is that those usually are very expensive, and fitment will suck. Answer was simple. Go to a junkyard, find a factory hood, buy a 2010 GT500 hood vent, and presto. Heat extractor hood for about 70 dollars. No testing has been performed yet, but I'm taking the car to another track weekend at the end of August. I'll have the results then. Anyway, pictures and captions

Stock factory 20 dollar hood with the hole in it. Had to be extra careful when cutting the hole, so it would be even.

2010 GT500 hood vent. Costs around 50 dollars at a local dealership.

Vent installed in the hood.

Test fit

That's pretty damn slick, might not be the prettiest but it would look awesome if you painted the top of the cowl flat black. Good work, sir.

What about the two little vaginas in the factory sheet metal? Those don't do anything?

Hmm, I'll consider that.

In for win, nice work. Nice clean cuts there too, that's not easy. Not that I have a whole lot of body work experience, well, let's just say besides cutting my fenders on my Jeep I have none.

Looks good! Besides looking good, I bet it helps in the cooling department. Isn't the bottom edge of the windshield a low pressure zone? Placing the hood "extractor" where you did seems like it'd help pull heat out of the motor.

I know this is maybe common knowledge or has been rehashed just makes me wonder in common cars, how the HELL they deal with heat or heat soak without having good ventilation.

Then again I don't build cars! \:\)

The base of the windshield is a high pressure zone, hence the concept of "Cowl Induction".

God damn it I knew I'd fuck that up! Haha. I knew that too, but apparently I didn't.

My logic stands. That high pressure zone would serve to pull air out of the hood in front of it, no?

Way over my head at this point so I'll just sit back and enjoy. Where's Denmah's thread tonight....

The high pressure zone at the cowl lets air into the engine bay. It basically reduces flow through the radiator by working against it.

So all those kids with their hoods tilted up "for cooling" are reducing the effectiveness of their radiator.

sweet looks good ,nice addition!

Hope it works out . Im looking at the same thing for my car ,try to suck air out of the engine bay

i already have a stock s13 carbon look hood, gonna cut a hole in it for this vent, then get it wrapped in the dry carbon vinyl.

Later ill order this to suck the car down and get rid of air aswell.Jun front universal diffuser

All shit i want to add to make the car track worthy

So, if some of you don't remember, I crashed the car in traffic, which rendered the hood useless. The crash was right before the track weekend too, which left me with out any actual data to see if it worked or not. Lately I've been doing a lot of summer sessions, and seeing coolant and oil so hot kinda bothers me. I decided to do this project again. I already got another hood in white for slightly more this time (80 dollars), and I will cut into it hopefully next week, depending on how busy my friend is, who let use his tools last time. August 20th/21st is another weekend at the track, so I'll get a chance to do some real testing this time, and hopefully see some good results. People have been saying that this is a good mod, especially for mustangs since they always run hot.

Small attention whoring update: Test fitted the hood onto the car yesterday morning just to make sure that it fits right. The fit is perfect. If everything goes right to plan, I will be cutting into it tomorrow, and it will be finished by wednesday.

Cut the hole today. About an inch closer to the nose this time by accident, but it's still over the space between radiator and pulleys. Going to fill it with foam tonight, and will post pictures tomorrow.

Will be interesting to see results. I know a lot of pantera guys do this mod to their hoods because the air moving past the radiator gets stuck in the front trunk area, one of the reasons they were prone to overheating. Another buddy actually got one of the saleen sn95 racecar CF hoods with the front vents and then it bulges near the top and clears his bypass valve on a 410ci YSI trim motor.

That's a sweet looking hood. Would probably work better than mine too, since the openings are bigger and it goes deeper, not to mention that there is a nice lip around the vents, creating even more pressure. Is that GR40 spoiler he's got in the back?
