Hello all. I've been away from the forum for quite a while, but have a problem that I hope someone has an answer for. Mine is a 2000 Si, 100% stock, with no modifications at all.
It has hsppened twice. After sitting in the driveway for a few days, I go to start the car as usual. The starter turns over, and the engine spins, but the engine does not catch.
The first time it happened, after grinding the starter for about 45 seconds, the engine catches, sputters, and tons of black smoke is visible in the rear view mirror. The engine was flooded.
The second time it happened, I ground and ground on the starter and nothing at all happened. It would not start. It sat in the driveway for another week and when I tried again, the starter ground for maybe 30 seconds, and the engine caught, again spewing black, rich smoke.
I know a fuel-injected engine should not flood, but mine has done it twice, so I know something is amiss.
I'm betting a solenoid somewhere in the fuel system is sticking open, allowing expanding gasoline is being forced into the cylinders. But I don't know where to start in looking for the culprit.
Does anyone have any knowledge they can share with a similar problem and it's fix?
