So would i still need a flash attached to the camera with these 2 umbrellas ? Also what would be the best positioning for them, facing which direction, etc ?

no, no flash needed. You would trip one strobe that would be wired to your camera via a sync cable (and maybe hotshoe adapter since your camera doesn't have a sync port I dont think) and the other would be triggered with an optical slave trigger.

at least I think thats the way it works. never done it myself

and for direction suggestions just put her in the middle of two lights opposite each other. vary the height and direction of the light source to your liking.

in short, just play around.

It works that way, yes.

Light placement? Place the light in whatever manner you want. Your friend's not paying you is he? If he isn't, you get to call the shots. That's what a photographer do in these situations, no money = captain of the boat = can do whatever the fuck he wants in terms of how the photo turns out.

Hell in an extreme case you could try to not use lights at all and just use on camera flash like Terry Richardson. That style is the rage lately.

Does this mean I do have a sync port ?

On the 50D’s left side are two large rubber flaps hiding the same four ports as the 40D, along with one new one. Behind the left flap are the PC Sync port for connecting external lighting and a terminal for N3-type cable releases.

OK I'm definitely the "captain" here, so I can definitely play around with this.

Please forgive me, my inexperience is showing here, are the lights I mentioned (Interfit SXT3200) considered "strobes" like you mention above ?

more specifically studio strobes.

strobe just means it's a momentary light, like a flash. continuous light is the alternative, and as the name suggests it's always on.

short answer is that yes, the ABs will definitely get you what you need. Now are you going to go 400s, 800s or 1600s?

Well they have me thinking between these 2 different kits -

http://www.alienbees.com/beginner.html

OR

http://www.alienbees.com/digi.html

OR I can do a custom kit with one B800, a 13" heavy duty stand, and a Foldable Large Softbox (32" x 40") with speedring attached instead of an umbrella.....

What do you suggest ?

then may i suggest devoting energy and time in the foundamentals of lighting before worrying about the type and brand of lights. Right now you're like getting off a trike and trying to decide whether to buy a Cannondale or Trek to take to the Alps with no training wheels \:D

A thousand times yes.

Additionally, this should become your new homepage for the time being:

http://www.strobist.blogspot.com/

Make sure you read through Lighting 101, Lighting 102 and all the "On-Assignments" at the very least.

It's a very entertaining way to learn the basics before tackling L:S&M, which is a bit on the dense side.

I agree with this. Learn it first, but if you're wanting to play with off camera lighting, then rent a strobe, stand & umbrella and learn that way instead of buying.

I just bought an AB800 + 9.5' Heavy Duty Stand + 60" umbrella (for specific reasons. 36-48" umbrellas are more common). I have an understanding of OCL, but still need to do some more learning and having the hands on experience will help.

If you want something cheap but good to start messing with, look into some Vivitar 285h. They run about $80/each and cheaper if you get them used. Or, you can get the Yongnuo brand off ebay. I have their triggers and they seem pretty darn good so far.
