Sometimes I forget most people don't know anything about photography. That's not meant as an elitist comment, I forget things like this all the time. If something is really basic knowledge to me I have to remind myself that it was still something I had to learn/read about.
Anyway, today's example is about knowing what a hot shoe is.
I was down in my old college town yesterday and I stopped at the local sandwhich shop (which is amazing, by the way. Check out Eileen's Bakery if you're ever in Fredericksburg, VA). I place my order and walk up to the register to pay. I brought along something to read and set my book on the counter to grab my wallet. After a couple seconds the girl behind the counter gives me a strange look
Her: What's your book about? Me: It's about photographic lighting. Her: so why does it look like a book about hot shoes? (adjective noun lol) Me: I never thought of it that way A hot shoe is the thing on your camera you connect your flash to Her: ooooh, are you a photographer then? blah blah blah
So, yeah, I wonder how many people have seen me with this book and gotten really strange impressions

I've never had that happen. I do get people commenting on the size of the 80-400 a lot when it's actually a small lens for a telephoto. I just tell them I'm compensating for something.
