To make fun of them. Just kidding, I was there to buy a truck.

I'm looking at getting an extended cab, four door, long box 4X4 Tacoma with the V6 and the towing package. With the options I want, it's $42,000. A cap is going to be 2 grand more.

I thought I'd see what the same truck would cost if I drove over the border and bought it in the US. Even with the exchange rate, it's going to be $34,000 Canadian. Our sales tax here is the lowest of all of the provinces too!

But it's more than just cheaper tax. Car companies all charge more for vehicles because they can. Just like with books and magazines. They should be closer in cost then they are, since our dollar is 93 cents US, but there is significant difference (read profit) to be made, so the prices remain high here.

Has anyone bought a vehicle in the US and brought it over? Any issues?

P.S. Ok, I can't resist a shot, even though I own another Toyota \:D

you can buy them. the problem is warranty may not be transferable from usa to canada.

Plus Im SURE I am outdated on this - I think the car has to be at least around 3 years old prior to import from the usa.

I knew there was something like that to screw you over. They have to protect their profits.

Hmmm, I better check the Transport Canada website. You would think that would be my first place to visit for research, but no, it's Clubsi...

RIV lists vehicles eligible for import up to 2010 models so I think the 3 year rule no longer applies.

Toyota's can come across the border without any issue regardless of year. Warranty is 100% VALID in Canada, though for the US terms. You will get 3yrs/36,000 Miles comprehensive and 5yrs/60,000 Miles (not 3yrs/60k and 5yrs/100k). Basically you lose a few thousand KM of warranty.

I import 30-40 Toyotas from the states per month and have warranty work done on them all of the time. The warranty book states it as well.

when they have 11x the # of ppl, you can afford to sell a bit lower because you would be selling 11x more (in theory).

Csi > Google?

Csi > all

Thanks for the help!

I think this will make a good tow vehicle for my track car and a good secondary DD, with room for the baby in the back, with the double cab.

If you think that's bad: one of the partners at work just bought a Highlander Hybrid. $63,000 with options and taxes. For over sixty large I could think of several dozen cars I'd take over a Highlander.... but whatever works for you I suppose.

Seriously though, I've been considering 7-seater SUV's recently and like the looks (interior and exterior) of a Highlander. I joke w/ my wife...

"It looks great...slamming into a guardrail at 150km/h"

I just wonder if there's a way to ensure that the pedal fix has been done to a particular unit at the dealership.
