I started to train for a half-marathon a couple weeks ago. I run at least a couple times a week but since I've started on this training routine I'm finding myself extremely tired usually starting about an hour after every workout. The fatigue seems to linger too---For example, I got a full nights sleep (8+ hrs) both nights this weekend and still needed to lay down for a nap during the day.

So far my workouts consist of 4-6 miles running at 8'30" pace, then 5 min intense stationary bike, 50 situps, a few lifting exercises with 3-5 lb weights for my arms, and 2 sets of 10-15 pushups. (usually takes me about an hour and a half for the entire workout)

Is this typical? I don't remember ever feeling like this aside from when I was doing 3-a-day soccer practices in college. Anyone else experience this? Is there anything I can do for it other than get more sleep?

Sounds typical for me. If I have a solid workout on Saturday, I'll pound a shake, go home and crash for about 30-45 minutes and feel well rested when I wake up.

I'm 30 btw, no idea if that has any bearing on my energy levels.

Are you resting a day in between? I mean like FULL rest. Take a day off and do no exercise at ALL rest.

You have symptoms of overtraining.

I guess that could be it then. Sometimes I do rest, sometimes I feel like I should be playing catchup and try to either walk or run a couple miles at an easy pace. lol turns out I'm doing more harm than good by being stubborn and pushing myself then eh?

Yeah, you need to rest and recover more. Pushing yourself without adequate recovery is only going to make you perform worse and worse over time. Somewhat counter-intuitive, but rest is very, very important.

what do y'all do in terms of weekly work out schedule, not in terms of what parts of the body you work but do you hit the gym one day then take off the next and repeat or work out two days and take off one and repeat? etc etc. For the last few months i've been going to the gym M-F and taking weekends off, don't feel overly tired but I do feel more capable of having a better workout at the start of the week after 2 days rest which is logical.

you're overtraining.

stop that shit or it'll catch up to you and you'll make yourself prone to injury

I typically alternate between working out 5 and 6 days a week.

One week I'll work out Mon-Sat (off Sun), the following week I'll do M, T, (off Wed), Th, Fri, Sat (off Sun).

The training program I've been following has me running Tuesday (shorter run), Thursday (shorter run), and Saturday (longer run), but I have been trying to fill in the other days with at least a walk or an easy low mile run to try and burn more calories (and lose a little weight). I thought I was pushing myself, but clearly I was doing more harm than good. I'm sticking to the schedule now and just cutting back on calories in to try and lose weight I guess.
