Wow, this is definitely how the car should have been from the factory.
Bit the bullet and bought the Cobb AP from Perrin with their stage 1 map. Their service was outstanding, and they threw in a panel filter and shorty antenna with it.
The first drastic change was the smoothness. I backed out of my parking spot and usually there would be a touch of bucking while doing so, not any longer. The DBW is much more linear now instead of an on off switch, especially in certain RPM ranges. I let her get up to full temp and gave it some gas in 2nd and even though there is still some learning to be done, the difference was extremely noticeable as it pulled hard and fast, and I let off at around 5700 rpm so there was a tad more to go.
Lower revs are smooth as silk, and the low end torque seems to be much improved over stock as well. Overall, they say to let it fully learn for 50 - 100 miles, but so far I am beyond stoked with this huge upgrade in drivability and power.

Nice. It's always fun to have a new power mod.

Did you baseline it so we know your gains or do you just hate me?
I just hate you!
Hahha, no... no baseline. Perrin made 54 lb-ft and 38 whp over stock (269 awhp / 293 lb ft) using this map on their 09 stock test car, that is all I have to go off of.
I know more power can be had with a protune, but I am cool with this route so far.

It's a great feeling - when I had my STi I did the Stage I flash, and a couple months later I got a Helix catted downpipe, and had a pro-tune. It was night and day. I went from 243whp to 290whp, and I forgot the original torque figure, but it was 322 when done.

ZIIIING! hahahahahah
So this was fun... dropped the wife off to get her hair done and then drove to Guitar Center. On the way is a fun twisty road which dumps you off onto the main drag where the store is. Ahead of me I see two motorcyclists, one on a CBR 600RR and the other on an R6. They were traveling the road very quickly and I kept my pace behind them. Up ahead, where the twisty road ends, there are two right turn lanes into a nice 90 degree sweeping uphill bend that eventually attaches to the main road.
The light turns green, and the guys are in the right lane, me in the left both turning.
I floor it and take the turn at full steam and the dudes hear my winter tires squeel and I hear them grab the throttle. However, I am in the meat of my powerband. Grabbing the throttle in the gear they were in left them too low in their powerband to catch up, so I hear them drop it into a next lower gear but it was too late. (Yes I know they would have destroyed me, but they underestimated me for sure.) They couldn't catch up by the time we hit the light, with me about 2 cars ahead. There were cars in the other lanes so they hung behind me and just kept revving back there repeatedly.
I laughed because I know it was out of frustration.

Doesn't take much to catch an inexperienced/cocky rider off guard. I know I did it alot in my Suby.

The only other mods I have are a 3" axle-back custom exhaust (to mate up with 3" DP and cat-back section in July, then stage 2 flash) and the Perrin panel filter drop-in. However, neither of those do much, but the Stage 1 Perrin map accounts for the slight increase in air with the panel filter and Cobb advises against use of any drop in filter.
The car is totally different now, and yes, having a custom tune will always extract more power, but I am super happy with this direction so far.
I absolutely love this car, more than any other I have owned (11 so far) Now with the reflash, she is so smooth, fun in the lower revs and very comfortable when I want it to be.

The feeling you are describing now is the difference most people say is between a custom tune and OTS tune
Most of the Cobb/Perrin/XPT 08-2009's that I see come in have a decent amount of negative ignition correction even on 93oct. That's why I am a proponent in this case.
Since these cars aren't SD or torque targeted based like a more sophisticated BMW or Mercedes ECU/DME -they really do each require a personal "touch" with tuning the fuel and maf scaling to run well. That's why Cobb doesn't recommend a filter as it complicates that further.
Also - 94si is right, the main power robber is the DP, and the horrendous stock tune.
