my evo doesn't live up to the hype. the handling is decent but it's mostly in the $300/per tires

The Type R was one of the funnest cars I've ever driven.
Yes it's a torqueless wonder but 8k rpm more then makes up for it.
Give me one in championship white with the JDM front end and that's it. No other mods.

chipped ignition keys/immobilizers were a brilliant invention. No help against tow truck thieves, but they'll stop kids dead in their tracks.
My SRT-4 was parked behind the minivan for two of the thefts and they didn't even try to get in it.
the 00-01 type r's had immobilizers. but with jumper harnesses available all they had to do is unplug the ecu and plug in another one, and they're on their way.

So the best sport compact from a decade ago vs. arguably the weakest sport compact of today? With far superior tires on the old car?
I think every other car maker could say their new model "X" is faster in every way than their decade old version of "X"... exept Honda, and sadly Toyota because they put their balls away back in 1997.
Not when it comes to compact fwd performance. Dodge sucks, Ford is supposed to stop sucking soon, but sucks at the moment. Chevy is better, but only because the Cavalier was sooooo terrible. Nissan sucks now. Don't know how an MS3 handles compared to the MSP but it currently looks like hell, the MX5 is worse than the MS Miata. The Mini is better than a decade ago and the Koreans suck less I guess. VW is up.
It's a weirdly dead market given the upswing in "premium" small cars. Though it should rebound nicely in the next year or two thanks to Ford and Fiat. Honda has the parts bin to make a killer Fit, just not the will.
cheers, scott

I dunno. A Caliber SRT-4 (/shivers) is still quicker than an ACR Neon (/lightsfuse), right? And if it isn't, the real SRT-4 was. Though I know some will argue the orginial ACR was more fun.
Not if there's a turn in the road, and even in a straight line, you're still stuck in a Caliber. The Neon may have had low rent plastics but it was at least a halfway pleasant looking design. I never got to drive a Neon SRT-4 ACR, but it might have been just the push to make me forget the 1g Neon ACR.
I know the MS3 motor is better, but what about the handling dynamics? People used to rave about the MSP (though it couldn't compete with a 2g Neon ACR on an autocross course according to GRM).
cheers, scott

The NC MX-5 is better in almost every way (styling excluded) than the NB, including the MSM. The MSM is faster in a straight line, but the new car is just plain fantastic. Lighter, too!

The Cobalt SS is the best small Chevy ever.
Yeah, Ford's out for now in the US market.
Nissan still makes the same Sentra SE-R they always have, lol. Sucked then, sucks now.
Any MS3 owns the MSP.
MKV/MKVI GTIs are a big step up from a MKIV.
A Fit Type R with a K20 would be a hoot.
I would rather an ITR than any of those cars you listed.

Word? That's a damn shame...can I have it? Yeah really!
sure, for $25k
But seriously, the factory alignment sucks (got that fixed) it still eats the inner edge of the tires after 10k miles.
The tires do alot for that car, without them it wouldn't handle nearly as well nor would it stop as well.
sure mods wake up the car but that's no longer a stock car.
outside of those things it is reliable...it should be since it hasn't cracked 21k miles yet
my sentra is more fun but way less reliable

Nissan could have had a killer SE-R. They couldve put the POS QR25DE in the base SER and given the Spec-v the SR20DET.

I agree that Chevy and VW stepped up, but the MS3 is mainly touted for its power. The suspension is nothing earth-shattering, and it weighs a bunch more than the msp (which actually seemed to have a better suspension too). The SE-R has sucked AT THE VERY LEAST since the late 90s, and you can make a strong argument that they've sucked since the mid 90s. The new caliber is minivan sized, minivan stanced lol center of gravity what?, and minivan weighted, and is a huge step down from the SRT4 ACR (which, handling-wise, never topped the original 1g neon ACR).
I love the newer miatas, but it took them until now to get them right. the 06, 07,08 miatas were good but the suspension wasn't quite right and the engine revved too low (hp peak AT redline). They tweaked the suspension, gave the engine the internals it should have had to begin with, and now I could possibly see choosing one over a 99-00 sport. After stewing on it for a while, I don't see the NC miata as a huge step foward over the early NB miatas. Much structurally stiffer, more powerful, better gas mileage, yes, but also heavier (unless you're talking 05 mazdaspeed), taller, and funkier seating position. They say the ND will be a big improvement over the NC (lighter, etc) so we'll see. I have faith.
Anyway, aside from the cobalt and new GTI, there's a definite trend of manufacturers putting more emphasis on "hey look, here's an extra 50hp!" rather than "hey look, this car talks to you like an itr!" because hp does sell cars and it's the easiest way to please even the most idiotic of car-buyers that think everything feels the same in the curves as long as it feels like a rocket as soon as the road straightens out.

The 2.0 genesis coupe is alive and well. I don't see too many of them on the road nor do i see too many for sale.
it has all the proper ingredients for the best sport compact around.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHA. Holy motherfuck. The shifter demonstration was fucking amazing.
In motorweek's defense, kudos for them including the words "like a corvette" in the GTZ review (even if it is talking about the rough suspension).
Jesus, hand-pump lumbar support?
part of me wants to say "Well, it was the early 90s", but then again, that dash/shifter/hand-pump/seats have GM written all over them lol
me and my dad use to watch this program. the music brings me back

I know dude, I'm sorry, I just couldn't help but laugh at some of the stuff I tried to be more supportive, but the inside of that car was so 80s/90s GM it overwhelmed my best efforts.

I tried to find a picture of one of those NOHC-era GTP interiors to counter with, but apparently the internet has rejected their existence.

itr > crx si imo.
way better engine, chassis etc
My theory is that if I have to deal with no power it may as well be with light weight. From what I recall (driving my friends) the CRX was 108 hp and 110 ft-lbs of torque with a nice gearbox and good midrange torque. It didn't have much power but you could short shift the car when tearing up the mountain roads and not suffer too badly. The brakes sucked on the CRX as they do pretty much any honda from the 1990's though. They were something like 2188 lbs, so drop the spare/jack, that little cargo thing in the rear and you have a fun little hatch, 30+ mpg, can carry the mountain bike, and is a blast to drive.
