I have MM455 in the front and MM6 sets in the rear, but my question is, is it normal for these things to have no strength when powered with the 18Wx4 RMS that unpowered Alpine head units put out? I don't just mean weak sounding, these things have no bass whatsoever. Clarity is fine, but extremely flat and thin. A shitty 2002 tacoma stock audio setup has more meat in its sound.

I was planning on getting a 4ch 100W amp, so would that be the problem? Or are these speakers malfunctioning? I've read that these components are power hungry, but my stock 99 Si speakers were louder.

what kind of car? Probably the power - assuming it's off of a headunit you are talking more like 10W then anything else. Install is a major factor as well.

Just for shits and giggles, make sure you wired all of the midbasses in phase. Play just the fronts and swap the + and - wires for the midbass at the passive. See if the sound changes. Do the same for the rears. Unlikely that would be the case, but it's a hell of a lot cheaper than buying amplifiers.
