Hello all! I haven't posted here for a very long time but now I have a problem that I'm hoping you can help me with.
I have a stock 1999 Honda Civic Si with 108,000 miles on it. Recently, while I was driving, my car started making a metal on metal sound. Almost like you missed timed a shift but only worse! When this happened I was in forth gear about 3500-4000rpms. So I quickly down shifted through my gears thinking it was a gear or clutch problem. Every gear had the same noise with no rpms registering on the tach. So I pulled over and waited a moment. Tried to start the car twice with the horrible noise of metal being my only outcome. After the traffic Gods calmed the road down, I looked under the car and noticed that a puddle formed under the car. So I said to myself, "I'm on a hill and that puddle isn't moving...@#$%!"
Now the car is at a local garage and the tech said that the engine is crapola! What appeared to happen is that the front end of my oil pan had rust which probably weaken the area. As I was driving something must have hit and punctured the pan sending all the oil out. I never got a temp issue or the oil pressure light before the break down. He put a ratchet on the crack pulley nut and tried to turn the crank. The crank twisted, a little, but skipped. As it skipped he pointed out that the cams are turning and that the skipping was the timing belt catching and missing the cam gear's teeth.
Onto my questions.
I'm no mechanic! Not even close so is this a good troubleshooting technique?
I'm thinking of going the B16A (SIR-II) route. I would love to spend the extra dough for a B18C but there's a $700 price difference with just the engine. So a B16A it is. I'm ordering it online. I don't know the rules so I'll keep the site and price to myself until someone post that I'm allowed.
The other question is what should I also replace-
Parts and reasons:
Throw-out Bearings - Thought it was a good idea? Yes/No? Pressure Plate - Thought it was a good idea? Yes/No? Clutch - Original clutch with 107K miles, definitely good idea. Water Pump - My water pump is old and I'm afraid that the new one maybe suspect with it not running for a while. Timing Belt - Same as water pump.
Some other parts that are more of a wait and see:
Flywheel - Afraid when I broke down and when the engine did it's thing, that some teeth possible snapped. All other belts - My belts are old and it was time for a tune-up anyway so we will have to wait to see what the new engine's belts look like. Injectors, Plugs and any other misc. items probably can be done after the fact.
Any help on this is greatly appreciated and sorry for the long post.
Hey, it seems to me that you have thought it out and almost answered your own question. I will only add that when you change out you clutch/pressure plate(and you should) that you should definately have your flywheel either turned or replaced as well. You wouldn't need injectors either. Don't those come with the swap? I will asume that you have the obd issues worked out. Good luck.
