Because you'll be worn out from the cardio and won't have as much energy (depending on how hard you go) and you won't be able to lift as hard.

As runforme Said-doing cardio after a leg day in general basically sucks, I usually do it after an upper body day.

I'm gonna have to agree with Lewis on this one. Aside from a 5-10 warm-up on the bike/treadmill/elliptical to get my blood flowing and my heart pumping, I like to always go to my lifts with a full gas tank. If I did 30 minutes on a treadmill and then went to squats I would probably be lifting half as much as I could if I did it the other way around. Although I don't think I've ever done more than 10 minutes on a treadmill lol.

as mentioned interval cardio can have an effect on your lifts....but not always.

and if you are just out for some lower heart rate cardio it wont be that much of a big deal doing it beforehand....but it really depends on what you are doing.

Definitely. I used to do all my lifting after spinning classes. Was more convenient for me then. I was tired, for sure, but it's not really that big of a deal. That being said, I'd have preferred to do it before.

i don't care who you are. if you do 30 minutes of cardio at an intensity proportionate to the shape you're in then your lifting will be affected afterwards.


I see what you're saying, and I think you're right, but I do not believe the impact is as huge as some people believe. For me, by the time I cooled down sufficiently from cardio and started my lifting, my heart rate was nearly completely recovered.

I don't think affected my development at all:

and you made great points. no one is going to go do some crazy cardio bout and instantly hit the weights. youll warm down a bit, have to go get changed(maybe) etc, sure you might be a bit tired but youll be ready for weights no problem......

....though im thinking you and me are the only ones who do any kind of lengthy cardio...

Yeah, I could see where if you struggle to run 2-3 miles, then you'd probably be dead tired and your lifts will suffer. If you're in good enough shape where you can play a full 90 minute soccer game or swim a lot and be tired, but not dead afterward -- well, there's a big difference between that and someone that can't do much cardio at all.

you can do whatever you want. i used to run to the gym, workout, run home. i found that my lifts suffered as a result so i started doing my cardio in the gym after my workout. i am able to have just as hard a cardio session if i do it before or after lifting. i am not able to do the inverse. all things being equal, if you're going to be doing both anyway why would you not want to lift first?


I do lift first right now, because my schedule allows it. I'm just saying that I didn't find it to be a hinderance to progress to lift afterward.

ive done it both ways.

If I came right out of something high intensity and went to lift...than ya itll be not as good...but no one does that. theres warm down/time between the cardio and lifting. the body recovers and lifts jsut fine.

if for whatever reason muscle glycogen stores get really depleted(which can and does happen, it all depends) than ya that will negatively effect your lifting.


but typically everything is fine.
