Lucky me, I ended up w/ one of the new GM products that suffers from not so excellent build quality. The under dash HVAC control harness is about to burst into flames at the resistor so rather than spend $45 for the pigtail I decided to just fix it myself and i need/want the GM connector disconnect tool. Its a little screwdriver w/ a hook on the end.
I go in autozone and head straight for the tools trying to avoid the guy behind the counter while he chases me down to see what i need. I explain what i need and he asks to see the connector so he can figure it out. we go out to the parking lot and i disconnect the plug and let it hang under the dash. the fucker starts unplugging other shit instead of looking at the one i placed in his hand. then proceeds to tell me that i just need a nut driver to take the fan box out and argues w/ me that there is no such tool.
I had one a few years back but lost it.
why can't these people just come to terms w/ the fact that they don't know anything.

on the other hand O'reilly's rocks. i would have gone there 1st but autozone opens before them. i was able to order 3 different sized tools for under $15 and i'll have them in my hand @ noon. the guy pulled the books out and thumbed through for 5 mins until he found what i needed.

I loathe AutoZone. Especially the one near my current place. It's all a bunch of Mexicans who don't speaky eeengleesh good, and they act pissed off to see a gringo in their store trying to buy something. Every time I go in there, I can count on getting attitude from one of the jackasses behind the counter, and I don't even bother asking for help anymore. Last time I did that was when I needed a CEL code read, so I went in and asked. Jorge (actually his name) took 5 minutes fucking around cutting out "SALE!" tags behind the desk before slowly wandering out to my truck. Then, as he's leaning in to connect the reader, he fires up a cigarette. In my truck. I called him out on it, took the tool, read it myself, handed it back, and left. Jerk.

Fuck Vatozone. NAPA FTMFW.

where i used to live they weren't that bad. i would walk in and ask to borrow the reader, they'd hand it to me and i'd bring it back when i was done.
i'd go in the back and set up my own rotors to get them turned, test my own battery or alternator, etc. i was in there a lot doing side work for people and when we had our shop.
this place doesn't suck because they don't know me and i don't know them, it sucks because they hire the people whataburger wouldn't hire.

Yeah, I can buy that... ours is much the same. NAPA seems to hire guys that know what the hell they're talking about. I've been to a bunch of them in a bunch of different towns, and they've all had employees that know their stuff, and are reasonably helpful and friendly. Plus, I've found their prices to be very competitive to the "discount" stores, like AZ.

On the flip side, AutoZone seems to hire a bunch of semi-retarded high school dropouts who think that their red shirt signifies that they're the baddest motherfucker to ever turn a wrench (even though half of them have probably never even changed their own oil). And their attitudes seem to reflect that.

To be fair, the AutoZone in my hometown is nowhere near as bad as the one here. Most of the guys there are a bunch of monkeys too, but at least they're reasonably friendly and TRY to help you out. The one here is ghetto as shit. Hell, they even hire armed security guards to stand by the doors.

its ok, they made up for it by designing it properly so it would break 300 miles after the warranty ran out.

I tried looking for a noid light to test injector clips last weekend. I didn't find one anywhere local though... Autozone had no idea what I was talking about, when I called Checker they at least looked in the back cause the guy said he's seen them before. Harbor Freight sells them but it's an online only item.

I prefer napa. When I was having belt problems with the neon napa had the biggest selection and the people that worked there seemed to have the most knowledge. They also have the most restrictive business hours

napa tends to deal directly w/ shops. they can't afford to not have somewhat knowledgeable people in there. but at autozone you just have to be capable of asking what year make and model and finding the part on the shelf.

I'm still kind of pissed at Napa over the "direct fit" cat I bought for the Volvo a few years ago. 1/2" smaller diameter tubing and about 4" too short.

Autozone (Bosnianzone here) sucks. Advance always looks shit up on the computer and then sells me the wrong shit (including a box of worn out used brake pads for the SRT-4.

O'Reilly's has been my recent favorite, but the one I go to has a bunch of old guys working there from when they were an independent parts store - and they know their shit.

cheers,
scott

NAPA and Consumer Auto Parts aren't bad around here. VatoZone sucks unless you need some black magic tire wet really quick (or some madd tyte floormats and hubcaps).

Advance just opened up shop about a year ago and hasn't been too bad on the customer service, we'll see how long that lasts.

the advance here sucks, they have no parts in stock for anything i'm ever working on and they are about 25% higher priced.

Last time I was at Autozone, the manager threatened to call the cops, kicked me out of the store, and swore he'd call the cops if he ever saw me on "his property" again

The backstory? Well, after receiving the usual ultra-knowledgeable service for which they're renowned, I was at the checkout and the guy who was "helping" me was mumbling under his breath behind the register. I wasn't sure if he was asking me a question, so I asked "what?". He looked at me like I'd just farted in his Yoo Hoo, and started mumbling again. So I ask in a slightly louder voice, "dude, what are you mumbling about?". At that point, the manager comes screaming around the corner and starts laying into me. I've got no idea what the hell just happened, so I started backing out of the store, he was shaking his cordless phone at me and threatening to call the cops for the third time by the time I was able to get the fuck out of there. Them people crazy.

One time I needed BPR7ES (NGK) plugs for the DSM, ASAP. Advance/Vatozone do not stock them here, so I went to Napa, where I ended up paying almost $30 for 4 of them \:\( they were like $7.28 each... compared to like $1.89 at the other two.

Napa ftw otherwise :P

you have to be careful when you buy NGK's
a lot of places try to sell you V-powers, which are like 3x the price.

I try to stay away from the places.

I absolutely hate Autozone/Advance. I work at a trucking company, and sometimes one of the mechanics will need a piece of hose so I'll run up to Advance to get it. It usually goes something like this.

"I need a piece of 1/2 inch diameter heater hose 3 feet long."

"What kind of vehicle is it for?"

"Its for a truck."

"What kind of truck?"

This is where I get pissed...

"A 2005 International 9200i."

"I don't see that in the computer."

"I know you don't, could you just go cut me my damn hose please."

i like it when i go in there to get a carb gasket for a regular square bore holley.
you can buy the mr gasket one off the shelf for $5 or get the one behind the counter for $1.
You just have to make up random vehicles and hope they came w/ that carb on it. I just try to come up w/ the most rare shit i can.
I need a carb gasket for a 69 ZL1 camaro, 67 427 vette, shit like that.

Lol, my friends dad had to do that for his bobcat. It just had a standard alternator that you would find on a 350 from like 1977 to 1995, but they wouldn't get him the part unless he told them what vehicle it was for.

Then the fuckers wouldn't warranty it because it was used on an "off road vehicle."

I am constantly needing parts for a vehicle, but it's not the factory part for the vehicle I am working on.

Always have to go into this long winded explanation of what it's for and why I need it. Then they get it.....

Although after years of going there I know alot of them and they are now pretty helpful.

I tell them what I need and if they go into their what vehicle is it for spiel I let them. They go get the part and I tell them its all wrong and repeat again what I need. Usually this extra bit of work teaches that particular person a lesson so the next time I come in I don't have to deal with the annoying data entry persona.

Unfortunatly these places have a high turnover so I am constantly training new people.

Something tells me there's some kind of training protocol at these places that basically says "no matter what, always ask what kind of car the person has. Always look it up by car so you know you're giving them the right part".

Common sense seemed to work when i was at autozone back in college. Know the application? Look it up. Universal item? Just pull it. Autozone was bigger on selling packets of brake grease than using the computers.

I love this type of shit - well I love reading about it.

I use autozone for most parts because their rewards card thing is actually pretty good, $20 off when you make 5 purchases of $20 or more ain't bad. when I'm looking for something out in the store I usually just tell them I'm fine and don't need any help.

the best is when you go to a dealership though and you have a part from another car on your car and the parts guy wants a vin # so he can look it up. then you have to go into the whole explanation of the fact that the part you're trying to replace didn't come on your car, so giving them your vin # won't do anything. then you tell them that you know you can look things up without a vin # because you have their parts program on your computer at home and you look things up without ever putting a vin # in. then they tell you that you can't use a 300ZX MAF on your maxima because they're a different part # and you say "no, you can if you know what you're doing, trust me. I've been driving the car like this for 3 years now."

I love when that happens.

pffft
swapped wrx?

I remember calling riverside mitsubishi because I needed an emergency water-pump replacement. "I need a water-pump in my 1991 eclipse".
"okay. "Turbo or non?" "Turbo." "AWD?" "sure." "is it, or is it not?" "it's FWD." "+-
alright. we can get the part tomorrow, bring it on in"
"alright... there's a catch"
"a catch?"
"yeah.. it's in a 1996 Galant"
"what?! those are different motors, you know"
"I know, I put a 91 motor in it. there's plenty of room, and you can treat it just like a 91 eclipse"
blah blah blah...
They did end up doing it, and all the techs were amazed by it.
I bet any of them would have done it for free if they weren't @ a dealership.

otherwise, the autozone/advance PITA is with the saab and Eclipse
they ask AWD/FWD for shit like spark plugs and thermostats.
and for the saab, they ask HOT/LPT for everything, and it's the same motor. completely.

moh well.
better safe than sorry.

Try looking for a set of 8 plug wires for a Nissan 240SX. It'll blow their mind.

I usually go to O'Reilly for my stuff. My swapped 65 Mustang always provided much frustration when looking for parts.

"I need some Champion spark plugs model XXX"
"What's this for?"
"65 Mustang"
"Oh, those plugs are for a 302"
"Yeah, it has a 302"
"No, they only had a 289 or the I6"
"Sigh"
