What am I getting myself into if I agree to change this alternator. How much difficulty/potential for broken/seized/rounded bolts or other general asshattery am I looking at. What would an average shop price be (assume $80/hour. She already has the alternator so don't factor that in the price).

you shouldn't have to change the alternator.
they have external voltage regulators.

$40, and a philips head screw-driver, and you should be all set.
IIRC, it's reachable from under the car.

if you have to pull the alternator, I believe it sucks.
torx bolts, old age, and shitty location.

Any more details on that? The car is my friend's girlfriend's. I'd like to give him that info (he's the one that bought the alternator) and let him know that that may not be the problem. Where's this voltage regulator at?

Do you have a PDF file FSM that I might be able to get ahold of?

Need yo help g96nt. Where's that voltage regulator at? (still haven't seen the car but want to help my buddy out). I searched a saab forum and for the life of me could not find a location for that voltage regulator. is it part of the alternator?

Yeah.. sorry.
It screws right into the back of the Alternator.
you can either buy a "new" alternator from autozone for $200-ish bucks, or buy the Voltage regulator For ~$40.
you should be able to lie down on the ground, and reach up to it.
the only thing holding you back is the age of the screws that holt it into the alternator.

you can see it on the back of the alternator, there.
