Was in the process of getting another 2.0 from a local friend. The previous engine developed a knock. Friend's engine is a 2.0 with bolt ons that runs very well. Miles are not low, so why spend more, when 2.4L block can be had for around $115. I have plenty of dohc heads; one of while has some work done. Aside from the parts needed to drop it in (2.4L adaptor mount - $70 , Gates 2.4L timing belt and tensioner - $120, water pump - $45, bearings - $80, srt rods - $70, new rings - $80) seems like the move to make. have the block cleaned, and blueprinted. Should be fun, as I already have a iceman, 60mm tb, af/x udp, header, and exhaust. Transfer these over to a block that yields about 30lbs of torque, and be on my way. Head and #16 or #18 cams to top it off. Looking to go with ITB's for the finishing touch. There are plenty of boosted neons around, and this would be different.

Done it about 8 times. In the middle of it again now. Would not do it again. Run while you can. If you go through it, make sure you stop at Costco/Sam's Club on the way home. Grab the 5-gallon bucket of Meguiar's no.82 Turd Polish. Grab me one while you're there, please.
Why does reading this give me the feeling that you've already said "would not do it again" 7 times, and that you'll be doing it again in under six months you'll be saying the same things again.

Its the cheapest engine swap around and is a lot of fun with only a very minor drop in mpg, I think I averaged 33mpg bone stock and even with 2.4 and untuned with Crane 22s was still at 27mpg. EVERYBODY should do it. The 2.4s are very common too.
A few things: 1) 3.55 or 3.94 performance B trannies are your friend. The 3.55 really shines with the 2.4's powerband, unless you plan on Crane 22s+ (looks like you don't)
2) SRT rods use floating pins, the NA 2.4's use press fit (stock NA 2.4 pistons do not fit easily onto SRT rods) No problem, buy somebody's gently used NA rods/pistons, people doing SRT internals sell them all the time for cheap.
3) Be prepared to do some backyard engineering if you want to retain PS and AC. I ditched both, "looping the lines" for the power steering made the steering pretty easy, no cmpalints, but I do miss my AC sometimes.
A 2.4 swap, most of the bolt ons, Crane 16s and a 100 shot netted me consistant 12.4s on slicks. This was with no dyno tuning and running rich. Within 80lbs of full weight too, fun stuff. Oh, this was on a stock bottom end with a progressive nitrous controller. It ran 14.3's @ 97 off the bottle, I felt it had 13s in it but I only ran maybe 5 times without nitrous at the track after I got it. LOL

Don't try to be different with a neon.... Just turbo it and enjoy the hell out of it. You won't be dissapointed. Nobody likes losing the race at the chance of saying "at least I'm unique".

Ding-ding-ding!
This is engine number 5 in my Neon. Engine 2, 3 and 5 have all been 2.4s. This one has some unique pain in the assedness to it since i'm using an SRT4 trans this time and a mexican-neon bottom end/exh-mani.
Done my brother's 2.4 swap, helped my roommate do his 2 or 3x, another friend... the list goes on.
I just gotta get axles, front spindles, all my tubing and wiring, and then my exhaust and it'll be good to go.
...and if i'm stuck doing this again 6 months from now, fuck that. The Chrysler shit'll come out, and in goes a K20A2, an LSD trans and a fuckin' Hondata. This is Chrysler's last stand here.

The plan is to run n/a with srt rods and thermal coated pistons, and bolt ons. No turbo. Running n/a keeps the odds of reliability in my corner. With the mustang injectors to relieve the worry of running lean, all should be well. Going to have the block tanked with new rings and bearings. Already have a ported head, so this setup with stand-alone should be good for 13.xx which is fine with me.
