Yesterday was the first time I've ever done repeats. They were 400meter repeats.
Here's my Garmin report: http://connect.garmin.com/activity/414497530

Question about repeats. I'm doing a Hal Higdon Half-Marathon Advanced schedule (thanks again to Mrs. Ironmom for showing me Hal Higdon) and for repeats he said to jog/walk in between. I decided to jog back and forth. He doesn't say how far/long to do it. So I did 400meters, then jogged 400meters, back and forth. Is this what you guys do? Later on I'll be doing 800meter/1600meter repeats. Do you do a "cooldown" of the same distance each time?

Also, I decided to change my racing schedule, I don't feel like doing those 20+ mile runs every week right now. I'm training to do Gasparilla in February. Going to sign up for the "ultra challenge" for it. It is a 15k and 5k on Saturday followed by a half-marathon and 8k on Sunday. Should be pretty awesome.

When I do Yasso 800's, I jog a 400 in between each 800.

Would you change that for each distance? Doing a 400 between each 400 seems fine, even 800. But if you're doing 1600 would you still only do a 400 in between? Or up it to 800?

Probably...just take it easier as the distance goes up. The whole point is to push your body hard, so you don't want to be taking naps between, but the idea is to maintain some kind of consistency as well, so you need to recover too.

I'll be shooting for a 4:30, which would be an 18 minute improvement over this year.

36ish seconds a mile is no joke! Good luck, sir.

Anyone thinking about White River outside Seattle? Matt may be getting a free entry and I'm thinking of joining him there.

Because my May and June are already spoken for with Collegiate Peaks and San Juan Solstice - why don't you come out for a proper mountain event and do San Juan with me??

I was thinking about it, but I don't think I'll be ready. I grew up like 5 miles from there, so I may come by to watch or volunteer.

Hello, what's this?

Farthest I've run in over 20 years. Felt pretty decent, too. I was curious if I could do 5 comfortably. There's my answer. \:\)

Edit Reason: meant to say curious to do 5, not 3

Good job man! You're kicking ass g@mby! I've been seeing you post in here. Keep it up and you'll be throwing down in no time.

Granted, I'm coming up to 2 years of running soon and I'm nowhere close to these crazy people and their Bostom qualifying and such nonsense. I've gotten down to my slower running being 9:30 per mile and fast is 8:30, or faster on a good day.

Thanks folks! I'm pretty stoked about it. \:\)

This is all for the sake of winter cross training while I'm not getting any road miles on the bike (doing 3 1-hour trainer sessions a week indoors). I was sweating balls in windy 27 degree weather today (after the first 1.5 miles or so), so clearly I can do this through the winter. I'm hoping to keep doing it at least once a week during the warmer months so I don't lose what built up.

Just like the bike, clearly the whole "base miles" thing has some serious validity.

We'll see where it goes...

Good job man. You're getting hooked!

Nailed a 20 mile run tonight. Longest to date. Not sure I can train much further on the treadmill watching Netflix. Battery got to 2% my last mile.

20 miles on a treadmill? Good job though man!!

I was going to do a long trail run this morning but decided to mix it up and try and run fast for a change.
Did 16 miles on some bike paths in 1:50:54.
Stopped once at a water fountain for a drink but didnt take in anything else and felt super good the whole time. Pretty pumped about that.

I'm dreading the possibility of speed work in 2014. I did a single 3x mile w/ 400m recovery this fall and my god - I'd rather run 30 miles of mountains than do that again

Thanks man. I need to get over the fear of being stranded without resources. Looking for a way to carry fluids and energy packs efficiently.

How you guys run 10+ miles without food/water is beyond me. Damn impressive.

So between having a toddler and spending more time on airplanes than anywhere else for the last three months, I haven't been running. Did the Run for Chocolate 5k today in 25 degree weather. Finished in just over 29 minutes which is four minutes off my PR but fine for hardly running. And I would have been faster had I not had to walk at 2 miles for fear of shitting myself It also wasn't a good race to go PR due to the number of people and the ice to dodge on the road.

Need to get started again now that my travel will die down for a while. Looking to do the St. Pat's 5 miler in under 40 minutes. Did it in 41:20 or so a couple of years ago so should be doable with some discipline.

I'm doing a 5k this Friday at 7pm. Found it to be a really odd timing, but the 5k on Saturday I wanted to do ended up selling out.

Just hit over 1200 miles on the year as well. Looking to hit 1250, which is awesome since my original goal was 1000, which I thought was nuts, lol.

Nice! I'm 69 miles away from 2000 and thinking about trying to knock it out this week with a couple long runs this weekend.
It would be nice to have a whole week off before starting next years training.

Did you say you are doing american river 50? I'm thinking about getting in on that, I wanted to do an april 50 to get ready for bishop in may.
I was going to do Lake Sonoma but I got drunk at my xmas party on saturday night and slept thru the signups.

New weekly PR: 72 miles. Was at 66 as of yesterday, and spent all day riding coasters and eating junkfood at Six Flags. Wasnt planning on running, but when I got home I felt like I needed to. It was cold and foggy, but I took the dog with me for the first time in ages and it felt fantastic. 43 miles to go to hit my 2k mile goal.
