4.1 miles in 49:35 today. I wasn't able to run non-stop, (ran first 12 laps on a 1/10th mile track) so I did walk a bit of it (usually ran 6-8 laps and then walked 1 or so. I felt great and didn't want to stop but I also didn't want to overdo it for the race on Saturday. \:\)

edit: laps, not miles

Congrats on the 4 miles man. Without going back over the whole thread I think that is the farthest I have seen you say you have ran. It doesn't matter how you got it finished as long as you got through it. It will only get easier from here.

Yea, it's for sure my longest by *gasp* 1.2 miles. \:\(

To those of you who've run in a race before, do you find yourself getting more pumped up due to the massive crowds and other runners or do you find it intimidating? Also, I ALWAYS run with music, is that ok to still take with me? I find running without it a bore and quite monotonous. Any other tips for running in a legit race?

My first race with with around 500 people and I was a little nervous. I guess your usual butterflies but I wouldn't call it intimidation. As far as the music, it depends on the race. My first race it wasnt a problem to run with my ipod, but the half marathon im running in November specifically says no portable music players. Im not sure why, maybe just their rules. I would say if you haven't seen anything saying you can't wear it, you should go ahead and wear it.

One tip I have is don't get in the back of the pack at the starting line. You will spend the first 1/2 mile dodging people, which can take a lot out of you real quick.

Well, I don't run any more. When I did, I could easily do 120 miles per month, but I didn't run the same distance on consecutive days. I'd do a fast 2 miles one day, then a 7:30 pace 6 miles the next, them maybe a 10 minute pace 10 miler once a week. I always switched it up.

Gosh Im so envious of being able to run like that. Maybe this time next year. \:\) Ima go down ~5k today (just run for 30:00 or so). What's the best running training to lower my 5k time? Just more distance? Intervals? Etc?

Personally, I found it easiest to lower my 5k time by just running a 5k a couple of times per week. And then the other times, I was just switching it up between fast and short and slow and long (no homo).

Sounds good. I didn't run today since we played 18 holes of golf and walked it. We walked close to 4 miles all said and done so I still got quite a bit of exercise. \:\)

Not sure how far I ran since it wasn't my usual route. However, I ran about 13 minutes (almost without stopping, I got a phone call) to the school soccer game, stayed there for about 30 minutes, and then ran back in about 9. If I had to guess, it'd be about 2.2 or 2.4 miles give or take. The only thing is that it's a VERY VERY hilly route and on the last hill (probably a 14-15% grade for 100 yards) I sprinted up it as far as I can for a good change of pace. After that, I just coasted down the hill back to my apartment. GREAT run tonight. I felt like I could have gone forever...

Tempo runs are what you're looking for to actually get faster, as opposed to just increasing distance: http://www.runnersworld.com/article/0,7120,s6-238-263-265-12224-0,00.html

Figured I'd jump in on this thread since I've started reading these forums regularly again. I recently (about 2 months ago) started running/lifting again after taking about two years off for, well... no good reason, really. I just got lazy and now I'm paying the price. When I was 20 I was in incredibly good shape, as I played soccer and tennis competitively and ran religiously (at one point I had my mile to just under 5 mins... 4:55ish or so). Now I'm 29 and a tad overweight at 6'2 203 and am shocked at where I stand on conditioning. My mile as of a couple days ago is 7:45, and I'm working up from an easy pace of about 10 mi/wk right now (split between 3 days). It's actually really frustrating feeling so slow compared to where I used to be, but at the same time it's a good motivating factor because I've been fast before and I know I can get there again.

Short term (~ 6 months) I want to get myself to a sub-20 min 5k time and work back up to about 20 mi/wk, while getting the weight back down to 180 or so. I'm honestly not sure how practical the timeframe is and how my body will cooperate, but we'll see.

thought id share some stuff ive been doing.

after 2 hour workout in the pool. it was time for weights. but yesterday was speed work(speed endurance really).

last week was 2x 30 secs (meaning go through the 8 stations twice @ 30 secs on 30 secs off). balls to the wall for 30 secs. its crazy.

yesterday it was 3 rounds @ 30 secs on and 30 secs off.

1)Chin ups
2)speed squats
3)med ball wall throws
4) skipping
5)pull ups
6)agility ladder*plyometrics*
7)push ups
8)wall jumps

after those 3 rounds(which were hell) there was a pretty gruelling ab workout consisting of about 5 different exercises done 4x around.

im feeling it today.

gotta try to fit in the strength workouts later this week.

reason I put this in the cardio forum is because the speed workout definitely incorporates cardio into it. give it a try!

If my high-school basketball practice reminds me correctly, you stand at a wall with your hands up and jump as high as you can for 20-30 times. It's even more fun when you hold a 25lb plate over your hear. \:\(

Good deal man. Im running in the foothills of the Smoky Mountains, so Ive got hill training wherever I go. Now when I run on flat ground it almost feels surreal.
