I did an impromptu 5k today. I have no idea if it was exactly a 5k or more or less as I had to rely on my phones gps for the measurements. My calves/achilles was aching by the end so I was glad it was over It's slow, but it's my first run in 6 months, so it's a start. I ran on a trail, Florida so no elevation changes, just uneven terrain so I had to make sure I watched my step.

My legs (more my ankles) felt tired by the end. I attribute this to the heavier/intense leg workout I had on Monday. I am more interested in getting faster than I am in having Diesel legs, so should I lighten up my leg workouts and focus more on my runs?

Anyone using strava? I have some friends that bike that use it and they turned me on to it, pretty sweet.
I really like the KOM/CR stuff for all the trails I run, adds some nice competition.

Its kind of addicting, I feel like a douchebag for bragging about runs on facebook but strava is built for bragging and talking shit.

Ankle is like 90% I would say, did 7 miles last night and had some on and off tightness during the run.
Good news is taking almost 2 weeks off was pretty good for me I think, tried to go super easy last night and still ran at 7:10 avg. pace.
Decided to sign up for a trail half on saturday with about 2400 ft of elevation.
No better way to see how I'm really feeling.

Nice man. That's how it was with my knee a few weeks back. It still hurt, but I knew it was still getting better.

Good luck in that race. I did 9 with about 1500ft on the trails today. Feeling quite ready for Cool the Saturday after next. Hoping to get 50-60 miles in this week the taper a bit next week. Driving up by myself on Friday, check in that evening and race in the morning. Staying with my brother, and he's got an awesome hot tub, which I'll probably just sleep in Saturday night.

28:30 5k today. I had set my phone (Nike+ app) for a 4-mile course, but I ended up running 9 min miles for the first 2 and decided to slow down for the 3rd in order to finish strong. Decided at 2.5 miles to pick the pace back up to 9 min and just finish. I would have ran a 27 min 5k, but that half mile of slow pacing to rest skewed my time.

Oh well, feels good to be running without pain!

Snow and ice have kept me indoors for much of the past few weeks here in Wisconsin. The temps have been fine but it's slick enough that the risk isn't worth it for a slip and slide slog in my book.

To keep myself occupied I've been playing around with 30/60 min sessions on the stair mill and treadmill at 15% incline. And it's actually been sort of fun! Or as much fun as I've ever had on a treadmill.

Sample: yesterday I did 1,820' of vert in 30 minutes on the treadmill, then another ~30 min at 7:30 pace and 2% incline before taking in a hot yoga class last night (which damn near killed me, lots of chair poses!) and then woke up this morning and did 3,350' of vert in an hour on the treadmill again. I'm definitely feeling stronger than I expected to so early in the year so I'm optimistic for my race on March 9th if I can finally force myself to do a real taper. I always bollocks it up by getting antsy and running harder than planned every day up through race day

Good luck man! I'm jealous, was hoping to get in on that race but the wife had already planned a tahoe weekend with some friends.

I run 6, sometimes 7 days a week. Been averaging 50 a week the last few months...40-45 for the year or so before that.

Okay. I'm starting out slow with 1-2 days a week for 4 weeks. Then I will add a day every few weeks and see how I feel.

Simply running 3.1 twice a week the last two weeks has my calves and soleus feeling sore.

My last 3 5k's I've averaged 9:30 or under a mile. I know it's slow, but at least my time is going down \:\)

First overall victory! There was like 15 people doing my distance but a win is a win, right!
13 miles and 2800 ft elevation in 1:59:50.

Thanks guys, it was awesome being back out after all the ankle issues. Not 100% but better and better every day.
It was just another reminder why trail running is so awesome, perfect weather running thru the santa cruz mountains and hardly anybody else out there.

What’s everybody using for watch? My garmin (410 I think) died last night.

Just looked the watch was a 405. I liked the size/weight but the touch bezel sucked the few times I tried to change something mid run.

I use the 910xt for the battery life and swim ability so I can use it in my tri races. My wife has the 210 and I like that one as well...simpler and smaller.

Good luck this weekend Ironmom!

Lately I've been noticing that when I'm running what feels like a slower pace to me, when I finish and check my time it's faster than I thought. Like I just did an easy five miles earlier and it felt 8:15ish to me, but ended up being 7:50. It's kind of fascinating how my perception of what I'm doing has changed as I've become a more consistent runner. Is this something you guys have experienced or is this just in my head?

Ran 8.7 miles this weekend. The longest I have ever ran nonstop. My pace was 8:30/mile, which I was somewhat disappointed in I guess. I hoped for around 8:00/mile, but I am pretty hard on myself sometimes so I should just be proud. Anyway, this weekend I am going to up my run to around 10.6 miles.

I picked up some Asics Gel Oracles and they feel really good. Also, this was the first time I have ever run in actually running shorts, which are awesome. I loved freeballing it in those things. I found my old camelpack too, so I used that for my muling needs.

I am surprised to say that I really enjoyed the run, especially the solitariness (correct word usage?) of it. There is a lot of farm roads around here, and I loved just looking at the orchards and open land. I don't know if it was just a "runner's high" but when I came to the finish I didn't feel tired at all. I felt like I could have easily gone a couple more miles.

Anyway, I am just glad I am really getting into this now that summer is approaching. I love running out in the sun early in the morning.

Yeah man.....you have access to some great trails within a pretty short drive, hell...even that dry farmland makes for some good running. \:\)

Glad you're enjoying it.....sounds like you've got the bug. \:D Just make sure you take it easy and take on too much too soon...injuries suck when you really want to run!

So today I ran 11.6 miles in 1:45. My pace is slowing, but I don't mind too much. I think part of it was because my wife rode her bike next to me the whole time and we just talked, which actually made the run go by pretty fast. I tried eating during the run this time to keep my blood sugar up (rice krispie treat) but it just made me feel heavy, so I am going to try out one of those gel packets.

Next weekend I have a 13.6 mile course planned out, so I am pretty excited for that one.

I went out for an easy 5k today. I tried to force myself to go slow the first mile so I could speed up the second and third, but I ended up with crazy leg pain after the first mile.

I must have been heel striking the first mile trying to slow myself down. I took my shoes off and walked around for a while until the tightness in my legs went away, tossed the shoes back on and ran a quick 1/2 mile making sure I was landing on my forefoot. Not a bit of tightness at all.

Whew. That was scary though! Felt like my compartment syndrom had come back full force in a single mile.

I guess I should just "run" whenever I go run? I'm assuming trying to slow myself down got my form all jacked up. I just hate my first mile being the quickest and slowing down each mile afterward.

Thinking about signing up for this race (50km).

http://www.insidetrail.com/ai1ec_event/marin-ultra-challenge/

However I haven't done any trail running yet so I would need to start soon. Maybe I am jumping the gun here, but I feel like I can build up my mileage pretty quick. After my 11.6 mile yesterday, I am not really even sore today. If I can get to around 25 miles by the end of May, I think I will be in good shape.

Does it sound to optimistic?

Thats a beautiful spot for a race. All I can say is that you'll really need to build up some base miles. I'm talking a good 2 or 3 months of 40-50 miles a week...with as many of those on trails as possible. My 50k wasn't too difficult, and I'd come off training for a fast marathon and over 100 miles on the trails in the month before the race and it was still very hard past the 20 mile or so mark.

It's definitely doable as long as you are willing to put in the long miles.
