I'm not big on GMs, or old GMs especially, but I think the C4 corvette is cool. Blah my ass, that car was IT when I was a kid. The C4 corvette is the first car I remember turning my head to watch as it passed by (it passing by the McDonalds playground on us 29, just west of Beaver Ruin Road.
Fuck you if you don't like them 
ps- I think they were supposed to be pretty dominant in auto-x at one point, low center of gravity and wide tires and whatnot.

As long as it's got a 6 speed, it's okay by me regardless if it's an L98 or LT1.
My first experience driving one was a 92 LT1, 6 speed. Very quick, great low-end, lots of fun. Felt like a sledgehammer as far as it being a blunt instrument. Not extremely refined, but still did whatever you needed to do. It was in the days before seemingly everything had high 13 second capability, so I was impressed.
The only thing that was I didn't like was the whole interior experience. From the generally odd dash, to the contortions someone my height (only 6'2") had to go through to get in one of these. The door sill sat higher than the seat did, and the seat itself gave you a 2" above the ground sensation. Because of that, the hood seemed wider and longer than it actually was. Once you got a feel for the car, the distorted perception generally left...or at least you just weren't as aware of it.
Amazing to me it is, that the LT5 ZR-1's are relatively benign performers nowadays in comparisons to even the base vettes.
I also remember the old callaway vettes...twin turbo with ridiculous body kits on it. Don't know why, but I never was like the other kids that thought those things looked awesome...they looked hideous. In those days, I'd have opted for a twin turbo package sans body kit. They really didn't perform any better than the ZR1's that'd come along a little latter, all the while costing more than said ZR1's.
I think many discount the performance of these cars today...seeing as to how they have 17" wheels (very rare back then) when even econo cars today have as much. Their acceleration isn't much ahead of the average fwd sport sedan, etc. But, at the track, a vette would likely still whoop up on most.
I must admit to having a perverse fetish for wanting to modify an old L98 car...because as a moderate sized 8's go, it'll have a ton of potential.

Considering they're such an old design, they're still very competitive in autox. Light weight, big tires, and lots of low end torque make them idea for track and autox use. They're still competitive with S2k's in A-Stock.
Cons are the interior quality, visibility is like sitting in a bunker, and the high side sills make getting in/out a bit of a pain.
Always liked the reverse clamshell design of the hood that shows off the tires as well.

I have a fetish for the C4, like spotch it was the first car I can recall that turned my head. I remember going to a GM dealership with my dad when I was just a kid and they had a brand new 1990 ZR-1 in the showroom and I was awestruck.
Anyways, as for maintenance, they seem to be good cars but for extended track use they'll eat wheel bearings and power steering pumps.

Ive always loved the C4s,and yeah interior,blah blah,but it doesnt matter-you wont be buying the car to impress the carhops,just the other poor saps shooting for fastest time of the day. 
I just read this after posting,note that this is an opinion from someone who worked for a Corvette Museum,not from a Corvette forum BTW.
The C5 Zo6 is great car. and i promise that you will not be dissapointed in it. I didnt own one but i worked in the Springfield Corvette Museum in springfield VT wich is no closed unfortunatly but you can still find the site online.
anyways we had just shy of 10 vettes there and the one of the c5's and also the "tour" car or dialy driver was the ZO6. so when the longisland corvette club (one of our larger clubs) comes up to vt for the weekend and i take them out for a day tour of the beautiful sights and roads of VT i got plenty of drive time on multiple occasions.
Either way Great car. and i think you will be happy with price vs performance especially for that older model which is the same one that we had 02 ZO6 with that electron blue color i think.
We also had a 88 Callaway C4 code named "sledgehammer" although this one was with the 4+1 tranny not the six speed. either way a twin turbo L98 if im not mistaken and while that was a blast to drive the ZO6 was a notch higher. Same goes for the 93 ZR1 40th anniversary ruby red beauty!

A few things that suck: High door sills causes entry/exit to make you look retarded, the thing has the turning radius of a truck, everything rattles/creaks, and the foot wells in the car are very, very tiny. Other than that, they're great cars.
