It's only taken about a million years, but someone has finally decided that improvements are possible in automobile braking lights. Students from Virginia Tech have developed a new system that can show not just whether you're stopping, but if you're slowing down, when you're about to stop, and how quickly you're pressing the pedal. The concept uses an array of horizontally arranged LED lights -- when you begin to slow, lights in the center glow orange, after a certain threshold side lights turn to red, and if you're slamming on the brake, they'll all flash red. The team, led by mechanical engineering Professor Mehdi Ahmadian, has plans for the system beyond the lab, though they speculate that it will be easier to add them as additional indicators on commercial vehicles at first. If this pans out, someday soon we may all be tailgating a totally psychedelic light show.

I read a couple articles back in 2000 or so that said US automakers and perhaps the federal government studied this in the 50s and 60s and basically determined that they would just be a distraction to other drivers. I'm kind of shocked anyone would think this is a new idea.
Edit- googling "progressive brake lights" shows a bunch of patents on the front page that were filed in 8-10 years ago. Obviously the tech is probably different in the VT invention, but I'm not blown away.

I thought the trunk wide LED strip on some cadillacs were doing this in the early 2000's it got wider the harder you pressed the pedal, or perhaps it just lit up from the middle outward.

I'm pretty sure they just lit up from the middle outward, I looking into that a few times.

I am sure if someone saw yellow they'd think 'shit yellow light, I need to speed up!'

I hope not. If you can't judge the speed of those around you get the hell off the road.
Why even have brake lights then?
It's nice to know when the car in front of you is slowing down slightly or panic stopping. This is when miliseconds count.

I have seen a led strip used as garden light. It has solar panel that charges the batteries at daytime and the batteries power the LED at night. It makes me curious because it has only one Flexible LED Strip Lights but it can produces different colors.Outdoor LED Lighting Its color changes from time to time. How did this happen?
