can anyone tell me about the volvo xc v70? the chick and i went to a little car dealership today to see what they had on their lot. there was this 98 xc v70 with 78k sitting there with an asking price of 7,900. she drives this little 02 s-10 and has to get rid of it due to a new member of the fam. who will be arriving in nov. the guy @ the lot said they'd give her roughly 4500 for the truck, which she would owe 3400 on the volvo. is this a good deal? do these cars have major problems? from the test drive, it felt pretty solid. here again, i dont know what a volvo is supposed to feel like. any info would be greatly appreciated.

They're not quite rwd Volvo durable, but hardly problematic. The I5 is rock solid and the chassis had been around for 5 years by then. I've never researched them, so I don't know if they use the same reliable awd as they do now.

cheers,
scott

does the price seem too good to be true for a low mile volvo? all i could find on ebay motors were cars that had 100k+ miles. i take it they sure last awhile. i just dont want something that's knows for gremlins..

No, that's not too cheap. And even the fwd-based models are high mileage monsters. But remember, unlike Toyota, even though the drivetrain may be good for 200k + miles, expect only slightly above German quality for small electrical items like heated seats, power-window-winders, etc.

Certainly should be more reliable than that S-10. Not to knock the truck, it's got a decent drivetrain (if the 4.3V6).

Anyways, off to my beer.

then go for it volvo > base model s-10

and volvo = safety especially if there's a little one on the way

good luck

In its defense, by '02 the S10 was pretty much perfected. I've got a friend with a 5 speed '02 S10 with the 2.2 and he loves it and had no warranty claims at all. Sure, it's a pushrod motor in the 21st century, but it works. No good for a kid though - I'm sure the crash rating is abysmal.

cheers,
scott

I can certainly see that. Buddy at work has an '80s model S-10 with the 4cylinder, I can't talk him out of getting rid of that thing. It looks like hell for sure! It has gone through a few motors to be honest.

Yeah, the same friend had a '91 S10 with the worst V6 ever made (2.8) and he drove that into the ground and then bought the '02. The 2.2 feels stronger in every way than the 2.8.

cheers,
scott

The 2.8 v6 is balls slow. I'm surprised it didn't eat the transmission as they do soo much shifting to keep up with the weight of the truck.

Research the volvo a bit. A lady friend of mine had one and it was a bomb.

I had a 2WD 92 sonoma with the 2.8 5-speed and it sucked balls

I had a 91 4.3L sonoma SLT/ST (different badging in different places).
it was the bees knees.
4.3L, 4-speed, LSD, bilstien suspension, bucket seats...
fun times.

on-topic, the xc70 is a great car.. I'd own one in a second. the price seems good, too. the I5 rocks, and like others have said, the cars are pretty damn safe.
