B&M FPR and fuel pressure gauge (set at 50psi)

I am in the process of doing this build and ever so often, little questions arise and I just need to know if I am on the right track with it. I thought of doing this build ever since I got my B16 a year ago. I started acquiring parts couple weeks ago but it wasn't until last week when my motor blew (one week after hydrolocking) that I see the need to hurry the build. I need the car to be a everday driver, occasional drag car. . .maybe once every two months. I am concentrating on the bottom end for now, will do the head later on.

Parts I already have:
B20B block. . .stripped bare leaving only crank.
B16A2 motor. . .block has hole, head is stock and ok.
New GSR oil pump.
KMS block guard.
GSR water pump, timing belt and seals.
Eagle H beam rods (ordered and on its way).
Chipped P28 and Hondata S200. . .no conversion harness yet.

Parts to be ordered:
ARP headstuds
Golden Eagle LS/VTEC conversion kit
Wiseco pistons. . .not certain of CR yet.
ACL racing bearings.

What am I missing as far as getting the motor together is concerned?
What compression pistons should I get if I want to attain 11:1 with the B16 head?
Does all B-series motors use the same bearings. . .main, rods, thrust washers?

All and any help will be appreciated, thanks.

call honda and compare part number with the engines i cant remember but im sure the bearings are the same....call and check...then call someone who carries ACL and get their bearings, they are cheaper. Call arias or weisco directly or go o their website, they have all those specs for b20 motors. You need a head gasket...check out the Poor mans type R post at the top...that should help you out a lot...good luck, its not that hard to do

Thanks, the GE LS/VTEC kit comes with a headgasket thats why I didn't mention it. The reason I asked about the bearings, is that someone from a popular tuner shop in S. FL told me to make sure I use B16 bearings. I will find out from Honda tomorrow.

you are using stock rods? Thats going to be your incredibly weak link right there.

Nm saw you have Eagle Rods.

Everything appears to be in order. Make sure you have a header that clears a 1.8 block. The B16 header typically will not.

What ECU are you going to run?

Ok, I just took off the B16 header today. I am going to run a P28 ECU. I will be sure to keep everything here just so that people can correct me an stuff. I am just trying to get feedback, and when the dyno numbers are in, will put em up as well.

10.8:1, I think the VTEC head adds like 0.2 then I would be up near 11.1. Then later on with flat valves and thinner gasket, I might get up to 11.5:1. I am trying to keep it really street, even though in FL we have 93 octane.

Yeah I figured so but I was more concerned with the longevity of the stock B20 sleeves on such high compression. Thats why I didn't really try to get it up greater than a 11.5:1.

ahh, yes the sleeves will be a weak point. I saw that ur getting eagle rods at least but It mentions nothing or rod bolts, make sure to get arp rod bolts.

B16 and b18 have different rod bearings. I am not sure on the main ones. I do not know about b20. What cams do you plan to use? What is the max rpm you plan to rev your engine?

Thanks for the answer on the rod bearings; yes I did find out they were different and ordered race bearings for the B20. The entire head is stock for now, plan to do BC3+ or Blox B when head is done. Max rpm is possibly 8k, thats only for track days maybe, won't push it like the B16 cause I know it can't hold revs as good. More likely 7k if I have to rev that high daily.

yeah you can do those cams with aftermarket pistons NO problem...the valve reliefs are bigger


with the bc3's you are going to need to rev highet than 8k...just fyi

I thought they stopped making power at like 8500rpm; thats why I want to stick to mild stage 1 cams, cause I don't want to be revving like 9k+ to be making use of a cam's full potential. Good heads up though, thanks.

Your engine is capable of 8000rpm no problem. If you want to rev it higher you could install a block girdle for added strength. Just like the b18 engines. If I were you, I would also stick with stage1 cams. Also do not make the mistake most people do and use an ITR/skunk2 intake manifold. Keep the stock B16 intake manifold as it performs better up to 8000rpm. A 62-64mm throttle body wouldn't hurt though.

BC3's will be great for ur motor. It will make tons of torque & not peak at that high of rpms. Check out jwyoung's build. Its a b16 peaking at 7800rpms on bc3's. Ur motor is bigger & higher CR then his so it should peak even lower. & I would also keep the stock intake mani cuz like vti said, it tends to be best under 8000rpms.

I saw the dyno he has and its really impressive, but I am not certain of his mod list. Right now I am relying on the power from the ~2.0 displacement, I will get the motor tune without the head work. Cams and stuff is for later on, so basically it will be a partially built bottom end with stock head.

Does anyone know to what motor specs the bolts for this build should be torqued? In other words, should I use the 96-00 Honda Civic Helms manual or the Acura Integra 94-01? I think GSR/ITR specs but not certain, need to be.

I have heard that b20/b16 setups require a crankshaft ventilator (endyne, etc) I am not sure if this is only required for forced induction but I'd look into it, i think they're fairly cheap too. I know I have heard a few people on Club si say that a crankshaft ventilator is a must for a b20/b16. Anyone?

I never heard this but I am thankful you mentioned it, I will seek out getting one. Anything that will prolong this motor's life is welcomed. I just read about the kit on "The Old One" and it does seem like something worth investing in. Its listed for $164, I was going to get a lightened flywheel but this seems to be more of an investment, where longevity is concerned.

It will run with out a catch can just fine. But it would be a good idea to set out up. My motor has been running over a year with out one. i dont have the vent line on the valve cover hooked up either.

I wasn't planning on doing a breather for the valve cover still. Don't think its as important as the one for the block. I see your sig says 13.8 in the 1/4 Ohjolt2, whats your mods and how much does your car weighs?

Edit: Forgot to mention I went to the machine shop today to have the pistons/rods assembled only to find that one of the locks was missing, so one piston pin is loose in one of the piston/rod assembly. Could I just go to the Honda dealer and ask for a B20 piston lock and use it? I just want to know if the OEM lock will be just as good as the aftermarket one. Thanks.

Piston lock? Piston pin? You mean the wrist pin? Dont OEM pistons and rods use a press fit system that isnt compatable with any aftermarket stuff? Anyway my car is gutted so i guess its pretty light. stock bottom end and stock b16 head. no internal mods yet. time was ran in falken st615's.

I am referring to the piston lock also called a C-clip. Yes I recently heard aftermarket ones are different, but thanks for the headsup, I was so ready to call the Honda dealer to get this thing asap. But I found a local dealer who stock aftermarket pistons n stuff so I will contact them next week (close on weekends).

Thats a good time considering you have no internals. Is this B20B or Z?

Never bothered to look, engine was in the car when i bought it. Car was kinda fucked up in a lot of areas when i got it. So i had alot of work to do on the inside and unfucking wireing nightmares and stuff. Then i left for iraq, i never bothered to get to far into the engine. Its gutted though so its a few 100 lbs lighter than stock.

Got the clip and all pistons/rods assembly are ready to go. I need to know is resurfacing the B16 head is a must??

I am pulling the motor tomorrow, I am still waiting on the GE conversion kit (suppose to come Wednesday), a flywheel and the Endyn crankcase breather kit. Block is ready to assemble. Hoping to have the car running by weekend.

Pros:
B20 has longer stroke, bigger bore. . .hence more displacement. Like getting a stroker kit.
Block is extremely inexpensive.
Easy way to get power and torque. Though its a bit involved if you want to do it right.

Cons:
Sleeves are thin, and are likely to crack under very high pressure, ie. high rev, nitrous, turbo, too high CR.
Not able to rev as high as a C5 or C1 block in stock form.

I am sure there are some more but those are essentially the ones IMO.

Actually I have seen people on higher CR without a block guard. I won't be at 11.5 just yet; that will be after head work, this is going to be about 11.1. If you have the money to sleeve the block, by all means do it. I didn't have it. . .and now I am crunching cause school starts next Monday and I didn't know; thought it was the following week.

I am now waiting on the Endyn kit, which I want to get before I drop the motor back in cause I hear installation is a bitch with the motor in the car. And should be getting a Today flywheel tomorrow.

Thanks. . .I'll probably get the manifold when its time for the head. Right now I am having some issues. Went to get the oil pan and pick up from the shop to find that the pickup wasn't there. Tried the GSR but it was too short and can't find an LS in time so I might just have to go to the dealer tomorrow. Boy somn would have to happen, can't just go smooth at all.

Yeah, possibly ~187whp and ~150wtq or so. I am not really very big on dyno numbers still. . .I am more interested in seeing what improvements I have made since my last 15.2s B16 run.

Ok I have a situation; went to put the head on today. . .didn't pull it off before. Noticed 4 bent valves, two intake and two exhaust. So now I am on the market for valves, just need to replace these ones. So if there is anyone who would like to sell/offer me their used B16 valves, let me know. . .I want some like yesterday. School starts tomorrow and it now seems I won't have my car not even for this week.

More issues with the head; although I was thinking this would happen. So I took out the bent valves yesterday (don't have pics right now), and found the valve guides looking like this. . .


on the intake side, the exhaust ones are damaged also but the intake took a beating. Intake valvles were bent worse than the exhaust ones also.

It happened because and when the engine actually blew, rod snapped so piston loose, hit valves causing them to bend and when they did, they were forced against the walls of the valve guide causing them in turn to crack/break. When the engine blew, I was at about 6k rpm in 3rd so I imagine quite a bit of compression. So I don't think it was crack while the car was running per say; I presume it all happened in a single moment. After the hydrolock though, it wasn't running quite as strong, but it was ok for the while. I never thought this build would get so involved. . .so it will be back to the machine shop for new guides.

Ooh yeah; I was planning on doing the B20 anyway but not at this point. The engine going just pushed me to do it even quicker. Thats why I am trying to have it done right cause I have no other car but this one.

The motor is ~finished now but it runs like crap, starts with no problems and idles really nice ~650rpm. I think the crappy running is due to the fact I am using the stock Si ECU and injectors. . . it seems this motor wants a lot more fuel so tomorrow I am going to try a GSR ECU and see if that helps, cause the way it runs is just crazy. I feel a little torque from start and then above 2000rpm, it seems like the power just dying. Haven't taken it pass 4000rpm so I don't know what the top-end feels like but right now it needs some work.

Also there is oil leak at the oil pressure switch which needs attention ASAP. I am going to try and remedy that problem and also adjust the valves to see if that helps. I will post some pics later on; I also have a short digicam video of first startup.

sweet! be easy on it & get it tuned asap. its probably running lean as hell, which obviously could be very dangerous.
get hondata, crome... if u dont already & take it to be tuned, for now I'd have them do part throttle tuning to clean up the a/f ratio. Then drive it around to break it in. Then go back for some full tuning.

I do have the S200 and a chipped P28 but I don't have the conversion harness yet, I was going to break it in with whatever stock ECU will work well and then get it tuned after. It is said that the GSR P72 could be used, even though the motor still requires more fuel than a GSR. And yeah, I am oh so easy on it. . .2000rpm then shift.

if it were me, I'd still have it part-throttle tuned to clean up the a/f ratio. u def dont want some detonation to start going on if its running to lean.

Yeah I know, more problems more money more problems. Ok, I have a question regarding the Hondata system. I have the base model S200 which has the interface blue box, interface cable, datalog cable and some little chips. Could I just get the conversion harness for the P28 and then add the S200 and tune? Or do I have to have the little chips installed in the ECU for it to work? The guy I bought it from said the ECU was already chipped. . .but I don't really sure. Is there a way to tell on the ECU to know if its chipped and with what; eg. are there specific ICs in it that were not in it as stock, or virgin ECU?

I know thats a lot. . . any help is appreciated.

yes, first u need to buy a conversion harness. u have an 99-00 Si right? So u need an obd1-obd2b harness. Jhpusa.com sells nice ones for very cheap.

call ur local hondata tuner. ask him if he sockets the ecu's for hondata? or if not then does he know anyone around who does?

most likely he does it himself. (i suck at electronics, so this part wont be to technical, but u'll get the idea). drive there. give him ur p28 ecu & the hondata s200. he'll socket the system into ur ecu so that the little red wires w/ the plug on the end will run from the inside of ur ecu to the outside. that plug plugs into the blue box. ur tuner will then also probably burn a base map he feels suitable for ur app & chip it into the ecu or something. then he'll put u on the dyno. do some part throttle tuning. then full throttle.

Hondata tuner about an hour from me, that is, one that was listed on their site. Its already socketed then cause it has the red/black wire running out the ECU. I'll post a pic of what I have later, I don't have my camera right now.

Thanks for the article, even though I read it sometime ago, the refresher is good. I am now wanting to go get it tuned quickly but it doesn't make sense until I can get an FPR and some bigger injectors. Well I guess I am at the stage where I am driving to see if anything is wrong. I was really surprised and happy to know that after putting the entire motor together, there was only one oil leak. . .which is now fixed so no oil leaks currently.

One problem thats getting me now is that there is a knocking sound coming from the tranny and I really don't know what it is. . .any ideas anyone? I started the car while on the lift and when the wheels spin freely, you don't hear the sound. But once you are on the road, whether the car is driving or coasting with engine off. . .you hear the sound. I thought it was the axle at first but its not.

Yeah the B16 head is completely stock. The only thing I did not do is what the machine shop did, ie. honing block, press in pistons to rods, install new guides and the valves, and tap the head. I assembled the block at home then took it to the shop, where two of my friends helped me with the rest.

Thanks! Fine misc. stuff to get now include, bigger injectors (thinking 310s), FPR, OBDII - I harness, and <50% throttle tune below 5000rpm.

With that said; I would like to know if there are qualified Hondata tuners in the South FL area. . .West Palm Beach, Fort Lauderdale, North Miami??? I only know of one and its kinda far from me.

Parked at home waiting on RC310s and a tune. Installed B&M FPR and gauge last week and turned fuel pressure from stock 35psi to 50psi. . .it ran a little better, no bogging at partial throttle below 4000rpm. I am also researching/thinking of Crome for tuning and selling the Hondata S200 I already have.

From what I have read so far, its way cheaper than Hondata and has the same capabilities, if not more, as Hondata does. The same person who recommended Crome is the same person I was talking to about tuning with Hondata. So if any at all I can sell the Hondata, get Crome, and save some money in the process, I will choose that route. In my estimation, they are all the same until you get into some stand alones like AEM EMS, MoTeC, Haltech etc. the real expensive ones.

Ok so here is the deal, car got a WOT tune two days and is running really good as far as I can see. Its tuned with Crome and thats why I am selling the S200. VTEC is set at 5400rpm but the guy said he really wouldn't know the xover that would yield most power without a dyno. Rev. limiter is at 8296rpm but I don't go more than 7500rpm. Right now, only thing set is the AFR, idle, xover etc. I will be dyno tuning in a few weeks to tweak that, get the right VTEC xover and timing. I am also proud to say I am getting at least 32hmpg with light throttle. Don't have to go too much on the throttle to move cause the torque is great. For a stock head, I think it does well, my feeling after I've seen it run is between high 13 and low 14 on the track.

Edit: I know most of you guys won't have anything to say until you see a graph with numbers.

awesome! so is the same guy that is doing ur street tuning now going to be the guy that dyno tunes it also?

I dont know how all u guys get such great gas mileage. Even when I'm really easy on my car the best I can manage is between 23-25mpg. Mostly city driving though w/ tons of stop lights. Although I guess its good that my gas mileage is still about the same as what i was getting stock.

Yeah same guy doing the dyno tuning as well, cause he has all the information of my setup stored on his laptop.

The gas mileage is a result of having the car run a bit lean at partial throttle or highway driving. Then the O2 sensor will do minor corrections to the AFR.

my buddy has pretty much the same set-up stock b20 block with valve reliefs cut out,
pr3 head b16 cams type r intake mani-throttle body oversize-compression is like just over 10.0 and is making 184whp 151torque with a tune and cam gears ajusted. if i were u i would go with wiseco piston and h beam rods, here in canada every all motor street competitor is using that block with stock parts but the head is shaved to the max making over 200whp

The motor is already built if you didn't read that part of the thread. I will list the parts when I do the dyno, cause I ended up with a little more than I planned. But yeah I have Wiseco 10.8:1 pistons.

So I went to the tracks last night. These are my best 3 times of 5 passes. Other passes were 15.1xx and 15.0xx, these were testing launch point/shift point since it was my first time with this motor. With all the runs, I have some serious traction issues even with the drag radials. These are launching at ~4000rpm and shifting at ~7600rpm. I am in right lane for each. Overall I am happy with the times and I know I am capable of much better (see 60'), so I will just do some more practising with this new setup.

looks good so far. ur traping about 1 mph quicker then me. like u said drop the 60's & it will look even better. too much torque to handle, huh .

that thing's gonna be pretty dam quick once u get a better header & cams.

Yeah the torque is pretty harsh, I cannot launch at 5000rpm or more. I have my AGXs adjusted accordingly and good psi in the radials, and tried launching there on one pass. The car was hopping and moving from side to side and when I shifted to second, I got so much jerk it flung me back and my radar detector off the windscreen.

Yeah I am going to try work on a better header for now. Then I will do IM, TB, cams & valvetrain. Or should I go cams first? If I get R cams, I will just drop them in as is.

Thanks. I will try get some cams before dynoing then. I just want a nice torque curve and I know that should look good. When I ran the GT, I left him all the way to 4th he passed me just near the end of the 1/4 mile. And I thought he would have left me cause of the torque those cars got.

No I haven't. I think I might get some other mods before I do, at least some cams. But I could just do like a 2 pulls (~$40 at local shop) to see the power, only thing is there would be no torque reading, and I am interested to see the torque.
