ClubRunner: Recovery/easy weeks

What's your strategy?

In prior years i'd done a 3 on: 1off with about 3-40% less miles and lower intensity
Last year I sort of just let my calendar/energy dictate. It was pretty hodgepodge.

Re: ClubRunner: Recovery/easy weeks

Now that the marathon is over I've scaled back the mileage a bit. I still do 5-6 miles per session on Mon & Weds (tempos mainly), and do strength on Tues & Thurs. My longer run is shortened to 8-12 miles on Friday night or Saturday. They are all still quality runs, but I take down the intensity a bit when not training for a serious race.

I tend to do a race every couple months to keep the training up (my next one is this weekend). Seems to work well providing I'm not training balls out for each one.

Re: ClubRunner: Recovery/easy weeks

Yeah I took an "off-season" in Nov/Dec where I was skipped a week or two(surgery recovery) and then was doing 10-15/week for a bit.

This is more during training. Like many trainers advocate against something like 16-20 weeks with no breaks. Sort of like you don't run every mile at race pace, you shouldn't run every week at trainining intensity. A few easy weeks thrown in allow you to recharge and approach your training aggresively.

Re: ClubRunner: Recovery/easy weeks

I usually just use the week after a race as an “easier” week, but I’m not taking any days off unless I’m just too sore to run.

It totally depends on your goals though. My schedule of two 100 milers in a month require me to train till I’m exhausted...then train some more, lol.

My mileage is too low to contemplate easy weeks lol, I just wait for the next injury to give me a few

Brutal to do 2 100s

Hey random side-bar.

So I'm looking at 2 different 50milers. One in Sept, another in November. I probably need to sign up before they sell out.

Too aggressive? Both my 50kms have gone swimmingly.
There's not 50kms between now and then that interest me. But I'm planning 1-2 40 mile powerhikes unsupported, and i have an option of a 40 mile run in August.

I'm thinking that I'll probably be ok if I keep doing what I've been doing. Lots of slow miles
get at least 2 weeks of weekly RUNNING milage >= max race
get some long hikes in
at least 1 activity >60% of distance

Re: ClubRunner: Recovery/easy weeks

I think you could do it, no problem. Plenty of time between the two races as well, so you should be able to recover really well in between. I say donut.
