Got slow windows?? Here is the HONDA Fix *pics*...

Welp, as you all know honda civics are notorious for having slowwww windows. So I chatted with honda for a bit, and found out what needs to be done. Of course since I love you guys, I shall share with you. Of course there is pictures, otherwise it's not a good how to right? right.... Sooo here we go

Supplies:
....Silicone Spray *make sure you don't get adhesive!!!*
....Philips Screw driver
....30 minutes

1. Remove the door panel. For 96-00 civics, there are count em, 5 philips head screws. One in the window control, one in the door latch, and three behind the speaker grille. To remove the door panel, pull from the bottom out, don't pull to hard, because you must disconnect the speaker. Or you can unscrew the speaker and disconnect it that way, but since I just had my door panels off for the components, i know how it works. Once it's pulled out at the bottom, kinda slide it up and it will come out. Of course don't forget the window wire harness, and the door latch bezel. It's easier if the window is down to remove the door panel.

2. Basically the whole problem is the rubber tracks get dry and need to be lubed up good ;D :insert joke here: Raise your window up!! So get your silicone spray (make sure it has a little straw damn it, otherwise your window is gonna be covered in silicone. And your gonna wanna spray it in the tracks in the pics below. Make the window go up and down so the silicone spreads out. Don't drench it.

3. You can also spray some on on the X bracket thingy, but that should already have grease in it.

4. Put your door panels back on. Put your window down! Then spray in these spots below, don't do it full blast otherwise your window is gonna be covered. Just let it trickle down into place. Thats it, test it out and your good to go.

Re: Got slow windows?? Here is the HONDA Fix *pics*...

that's good to know!! thanks brandon. when my driver's side window was slow, honda replaced the motor in it. same thing happened with my 98ex. but, lubing the track has to make them faster too. thanks for the tip.

Re: Got slow windows?? Here is the HONDA Fix *pics*...

does the silicone spray hurt tint (leave marks) if it gets on it? anyone tried it yet with tint?

I wouldn't think silicone would.. WD-40, maybe, but silicone?\

Any brand of silicone lube will do.

Re: Got slow windows?? Here is the HONDA Fix *pics*...

If you're too lazy to take off the door panel, you can spray the front AND rear tracks with the windows open. Just spray, then open and close a few times to help it down, then spray a bit more and wait a bit so the lube can slowly go down the track.

Any type of silicone lube will do. I've tried WD40 but I find it doesn't work as good, and you'll have to put up with the smell of WD40 for a couple of days.

Is there a service bulletin related to this problem. My windows also appear to be slow going up sometimes.

Honda does sell the lube, i think it comes in a black can. Cant remember the price. And the lube is to help the window go up, you shouldnt really have a problem getting the window down unless your window tracks are really dry or possibly dirty.

Re: Got slow windows?? Here is the HONDA Fix *pics*...

!! DONT USE SILICON SPRAY !! TRUST ME !!
!! USE CARBON POWDER INSTEAD !!

Hey I have tried the silicon spray trick, it was GREAT for a few weeks, but after a while the silicon dries up, hardens, and gathers dirt, the windows get worse! Ive tried removing the silicon and re-applying it - it was again ok for a few days but then got worse again!

Ever since then Ive had to use detergent now and then to remove the stray silicon, after a few months the silicon is minimized and the windows slide on bare rubber. Once you get to this stage, apply carbon powder onto the tracks and its like new for a week or so, then clogs up again, apply the carbon powder once a fortnight and it should be fine.

I am thinking of replacing the rubber tracks with new ones since the silicon damaged the natural smoothness of the rubber

Note that carbon powder is what they used in the factory...

I just did this today and applied silicone throughout the whole tracks as per the instructions here. This mod did NOT work for me. My passenger side window is still slow as hell.

Re: Got slow windows?? Here is the HONDA Fix *pics*...

then the problem could lie in the motor..... or the tracks are beyond siliconable heh

Re: Got slow windows?? Here is the HONDA Fix *pics*...

I went by my dealership today and the service manager came out with a can of silicon spray, he sprayed along the lips on the sides of the windows, and down into the door too... Now my windows move prolly 1.5 x's as fast! He just used an autopart store brand nothing fancy...

You don't need to go to a dealer. I picked up Prestone silicone spray for under 2 bucks at Target. I sprayed it generously in the front and rear tracks a few times. I never removed any panels. Windows have been working like brand new for several months. My car is over 3 years old also.
