favorite kit car (with a catch)?

Ok, I'm bored, it's too cold to go work on the racecar, and I just finished looking through an old copy of Octane with an article about several Lancias, including the almighty Stratos. And I got to thinking that if I could have any kit car, it would be the Hawk Stratos:

In some ways I'd rather have this than the real thing as I'd get one with an Alfa 3.0 V6 that is more reliable and powerful than the original Ferrari 2.4 V6 and costs a fraction to maintain. And it's so close to the original that Hawk parts are used for restoration and as crash repair.

Anyways, what's your favorite kit car - with this catch: No Factory Five cars. Yes, every car enthusiast wants a FFR Cobra or Daytona. That's a no brainer and everybody answering with the same car would be boring.

So, after the FFR's, what's your favorite kit car?

cheers,
scott

They can always sue Mitsubishi for stealing their fascia and come up with more operating cash that way.

Re: favorite kit car (with a catch)?

There's a guy in Fort Worth, OJ Hanna, that builds Corvette Grand Sport replicas. Its a brand new body and full tube chassis. You can have any drivetrain you want and any color as long as its blue and white.
I'd love one of those, but.....

He had the sexiest Porsche speedster kit car I'd ever seen. It was straight up James Dean. It had a new VW motor in it and the top of the windscreen was even w/ my waist. He wanted $18k for it in road worthy condition w/ flawless silver paint and leather straps on the rear deck. That is what I want.

Okay, I know you have a thing for wierd italian machinery. . . but the Stratos?! Why?!

I'm with ReplicaR here. Caterham 7 knockoff all the way. The company that makes a 340R kit replica will have my money the very next day though.

Cause it's sexy. It looks like no other mid-engined exotic, no other car, really. Because it was the last of the dominant two wheel drive rally cars. Because I've had a hard on for it since I was 10. Because the replica is powered by the beautiful Alfa Romeo Arese V6.

Oh, the 7 is a close second. I've been daydreaming about building a locost around the suspension and drivetrain from the Alfetta. It wouldn't look exactly like a 7 because the transaxle would push the seats forward slightly, but I think it would be pretty cool, and there has to be a good number of those cars with good running gear attached to a rusted out shell thanks to the garbage Soviet steel the Italians were using in the 1970's.

Hrm. I'm thinking either an ERA or Roaring Forties GT-40. Nothing too fancy, just a dry-sumped aluminum block 302 with ITBs \:\)

edit: I'd also get the Gulf flares, Gurney bubble, and a nice powder blue/orange paint job ;\)

That's fair, plus it has the added distinction of being redesigned by Peter Brock, the Daytona's original designer.

Re: favorite kit car (with a catch)?

I'm trying to find this one Cobra kit car I dug up a few months ago, it was the ultimate Cobra car. It's like what you'd get if you gave a suspension idiot savant a clean sheet of paper and dropped a Cobra body on it, all the little move-y bits underneath were really well done. It was refreshing to see rather than the normal Cobra route of "hey guys let's see how many Fox-body/SN95 parts we can recycle"

Re: favorite kit car (with a catch)?

To be fair the FFR cars do have some sort of SLA front suspension, they just use the Mustang uprights. Even still, I have a feeling they've probably inherited the (static and dynamic) camber deficiencies from their donors

Re: favorite kit car (with a catch)?

I think the Noble M12 or M15 is a "kit car" because I think it's sold sans drivetrain. So you can install whatever you like (tho the "Stock" setup is pretty damn sweet) The M15 makes me happy in my pants.

Re: favorite kit car (with a catch)?

If it doesn't come in a state that resembles a giant Revell model (ie: in a box in many pieces), I'd say it's not a kit car. If you can say "don't worry, honey, I'll be done by the end of the weekend", it's not a kit car. Hell, if you still have a marriage to show for after all is said and done it's probably not a kit car (or you married the only decent woman on earth).
