I'm going to walk out to the garage now and make a grocery list of everything I think needs done... |

No chance. Well, depends on how much free time you have. |

Here's the current state of the car: -Rear suspension is half polyurethane bushing'd, coilovers are mounted but probably need adjusted. -interior is half missing -engine is mostly assembled, not in car -transmission is apart -front suspension is apart -fuel system is done/ran to the engine compartment -have lots of parts in the garage ******************************************* Here's my (incomplete) list of tasks in no particular order: finish poly bushing install reinstall rear seat/passenger seat fab downpipe install/weld exhaust finish windage tray install/reinstall oil pan weld intake manifold halves together put tranny back install engine turbo oil lines turbo piping intercooler install fpr/finish fuel lines install Megasquirt new spring for BOV stereo install front coilover install new tires aluminum radiator install reinstall axles/front brakes find local E85 source hood install/prop rod Check battery nitrous purge kit direct port conversion COP conversion install pyrometer/gauge install nitrous pressure gauge buy/install boost gauge |

I really want it together by May 10th so I can tune it, get some street time and hit a test and tune night before Racer Wars, I mean, the Sport Compact Nationals at Norwalk June 3rd. |
if you have a regular job? no fucking way. |
Ordered 11psi Tial spring. Cross one off the list. But yeah, I do have a day job. I'll have to do lots of nights after I get the kid to bed to make progress. |
Scott, i'm in the same boat. I'll keep you on your timeline if you do the same for me. |
Cool man! I bought a boost gauge today, woohoo... I think I'll get the seats back in tonight to get started. Nice and easy. Then this week I'll get the rear done. I think after that I'll get the engine/tranny put together. I need to make a formal project project plan. I work well with lists. Hallelujah, I'm buddies with an exhaust guy and my girlfriends dad was a welder for 30 years! |
I know from lists. I need to update this one actually... |
That's a huge bitch! I mean list. Seats are in the car. |

Handed my INDY intake manifold off to get the halves welded together. Also double checked the rear suspension, it's done already. |
NICE. Plan for tonight is to get fuel line mounted, pull intake manifold (Again!) and figure out how i'm getting the starter wired once and for all. Stretch goal, unhook the goddamned hub YET again so a buddy can lathe it down for me. |
you two fuckers are inspiring. I'm gonna finish this fucking bag of doritos! |
OK. Fuel line, in. Dipstick, RTVd and drying. Starter + wire, In. Hub, OUT. Control arm mounted and measured for spacers between the sphericals and pocket? Done! Garage more clean? Indeed. Productive night. |

Gonna plan my turbo oil drain tonight, an easy one... |
Ugb. I've been avoiding that one. Good luck. |
meh. took me about a month to put my car together, but most of the downtime was parts that didn't fit. the car was basically a shell. |
Thanks to you guys, I went out and re-hung the door on the SE-R. Closes like a bank vault now! |
Intake manifold: MOUNTED. Dipstick: refettled, MOUNTED. Starter +: refettled, MOUNTED. Thermo-neck: MOUNTED. TB: MOUNTED. EGR Block: MOUNTED. Fender flares: removed from car and hung on the wall to prevent breakage. New things I discovered I need: Fuel line from rail to car. Knock Sensor (I can't recall if i installed this in the MS lol so long ago) Hoseclamps everywhere. Tomorrow night: turbo if i can find my drain line. |
Drank beer tonight ftl. |
Shit man, no worries. Thursday is my "go drink beer with friends" night, so you won't see me do shit tomorrow. Tonight was my "drink beer with car" night. Turbo: INSTALLED. Control arms: measured for sleeves. Now i can see how to run the turbo drain better than before; once that's in, I can button up the axles, which lets me get the hubs, alternator and a couple other things in line. Never found my old drain line. Looks like i get to buy another. |
i must admit though i had one friend stay up for like 3 days helping me finish the car before my tuning appointment. i am forever in his debt. |
I need some buddies to help lift the front of the engineless car up and push it into my driveway so i can have room to install the engine soon. I will provide them with beverages and pizza. |
Little more progress. Shifter is ready for remount, have a shopping list for tomorrow. Passenger side tierod is installed, more garbage thrown out. Maybe tomorrow I put windage tray on? |
Best thread in SvA in a long time. Proud of Matt and Scott. KEEP IT UP BITCHES. |
Holy fuck silicone drain line is expensive. Had the dude at carquest cut me 2 feet, because we both figured about 3.50/4.00 a foot. We both went off when it rang in around 12.50/ft. He cut me a break on the price, but daaaamn. Still out 8.60/ft. At least the turbo drain will be in though. |
Bought lugnuts, various fittings and transmission fluid at Summit today. Then I got oil inlet and drain lines along with a turbo oil filter on Ebay. I need to get my oil pan and bung to the welder. While that's in the shop I can get the front Prothanes (I bet if I look hard enough I'll find a few other things to do...). |
Turbo drain, plumbed. Crank scraper, installed. Crank scraper, uninstalled. Windage tray that fits close enough to BE a crankscraper, installed. I've lost two engines now to oil starvation. NEVER AGAIN. |
http://www.crank-scrapers.com I have that too. I helped the owner adapt his later 2.4 block scraper to the early 2.4 oil pan and got a couple freebies out of it. I finally bought the full meal deal like you have. It's a nice piece. Just waiting to get the kid to bed so I can assemble my tranny. Seems like a next logical step. |
What turbo are you running Matt? I have an Hy35, seems like a decent turbo for my goals. |
T3/T4 60 trim iirc. Hand me down Turbonetics piece. Have you fitted your crankscraper yet? I couldn't get the teflon piece to work, the steel sits at the 1mm clearance he required. Stupid bigass T2 rods. Bonus Productivity, just fitted the intermediate shaft for the T850. Bought the custom bracket like... 3 years ago. Finally fitted. Alt in place, intermediate shaft mounted. This unblocks axles. |
I got the teflon in there but I am stock SRT rods (and pistons). It's built to handle (and hopefully make) 400whp with the occasional 100 shot. At least I hear the tale of stock internal SRT4s making 500whp. I'm starting out at like 3 or 5psi though. lol I need to put 3 or 5psi spring on my shopping list... What are you using for a clutch? I have a Clutchnet SRT4 clutch cut down to fit. Should work nicely. |
Stock SRT4 clutch for now. uncut. Targeting just over 300hp, should hold fine. |
In such a light car, should be great. |
Yep. Got a little more done tonight. My motor has a weird piece that bolts onto the oil pump and curves around back behind the oil pan to hold the filter. Think SRT4 oiling, but external to the steel pan. Well, now I have an intermediate shaft back there, and wanted the clearance... so I went up to a buddy's house with the neck since he's got a bandsaw. Plan was cut the flange off, tap it to NPT, and run remote oil filter. ...well he got creative, and built a tool to hold the bandsawed flange off the neck, chucked it in the lathe, and made a smooth area for O rings to sit on. Gonna order AN fittings tomorrow once I figure out how big I need (looks like 8AN but gotta check), and run the remote oil filter. Should prevent ANY chance of cracking the cast AL with an NPT fitting... just in case. |
I dogged it last night but got the tranny together tonight Quaife and all. |
Hey Matt, the dipstick in the new block is broken. How do they come out? |
Pressfit. Twist and pull. Had to glue mine back in with RTV. Hope it holds. |

yeah, it's not so buried anymore. You wouldn't recognize my garage if you saw it these days! Speaking of which, we're all long overdue for a night over here. Lemme get the kegerator over here and i think i'll declare barbeque night... or better yet, Kiley keeps saying she wants to cook, maybe i'll just be lazy. |
There's now an oil pan and a front motor mount... now i can mock up the rear mount I need to fab. Need to redrill the FMM bracket, too... but not tonight. It almost resembles an engine. |
Why did you choose to go with the steel pan rather than the cast aluminum one? |
Didn't want to convert to SRT oil pump, pickup, etc plus originally built this motor before SRT came out, and crankscraper was fitted to this pan. |
Got my dipstick installed. I was a little worried since I had one broken off in the new block. Pounded it out through the bottom. My list of things to do is down to twenty but kind of reads like a Haynes manual. "install engine", "install intercooler"... Actually its not so much the hard parts I worry about, its the wiring and Megasquirt install/tuning. 1 install bung for oil drain in oil pan - by others 2 reinstall oil pan 3 finish engine assembly 4 turbo oil lines 5 install engine/tranny 6 intercooler install 7 turbo piping/BOV 8 front prothanes/sway bar 9 front coilover install 10 reinstall axles/front brakes 11 hood install/prop rod 12 Check battery -Can be done anytime 13 fpr/finish fuel lines 14 install pyrometer/gauge 15 install nitrous pressure gauge 16 install boost gauge 17 update Megasquirt -Can be done anytime 18 install Megasquirt 19 fab downpipe - by others 20 install/weld exhaust - by others |
So obviously you're stuck on some of these, but what can you install tonight? Can you make headway on the gauges, etc? |
I'm gonna charge the battery and grab the Megasquirt to see where I left off. I was just thinking about what can be done/when... We're like a support group here man. I estimate 46 man hours until I attempt to start the car. lol |

OK. Night of little forward progress, but a night none-the-less. Pulled the front motor mount back out, fettled it into shape slightly. Tonight was the night of "crap, better chase that hole too". I had to run my rethreader down damned near every bolt hole for the FMM assembly; apparently the motor didn't like not having anything threaded there for like 6 years. has the assembly in and out about 6 times, had to fire up the air cutter, too. Tools are awesome. Ordered a pizza, poured myself a beer and just got down to business. Once that was done, i got the passenger seat bolted in. Now i've got a list of parts to order a mile long. Gotta get an M16 tap, 2 M16-8AN adapters, 48" of 3AN, a clutch fitting, and a new rear engine mount, plus go pick up 3 M6x1 bolts tomorrow to hold this damned oiler plate in place. Edit: parts ordered. 75 at Summit, 32 for the engine mount, 20 for the tap. Bleh. I feel broke. |
Axles are in, at least temporarily. I can now say SRT4 axles fit a 1gen, with 2gen hubs, special intermediate shaft adapter and no control arms Its nice seeing boxes end up in the recycle bin after years and years. |

I get my turbo oil lines tonight. So then I can pick a spot to have the drain bung welded to the pan and take it to a shop. As soon as that and my intake manifold are back I will assemble the engine and bolt up the tranny then bolt it in the car. A week or two? Then I can really dig in and bolt the wheels on/ plumb the lines, wiring, etc. Matt my ADD probably prevented me from seeing it. Are you Megasquirting? |

Pick a spot above the oil line while the motor is mounted! I made the mistake of picking a spot that looked fine on the bench but with the angle the motor sits in the car its below level. |

Leaving the stock ECU for some control, but running fuel and spark through the MS. |

Good to hear you're making good progress! I might ping you about your MS. I built mine four years ago (maybe?). I know there are updated coil drivers and otheradvancements since then... |
Its been at least a year since I built mine, we'll see what i can remember, but of course i'll answer questions. One of my coworkers used to build them when he owned a fab shop, he's forgotten more than i know about 'em. We'll get it figured one way or another. Progress last night: 0, stuck at work until 1am. |
I picked a spot on the oil pan just below where it mounts to the block. I *almost* drilled the hole out but I just marked the spot with a magic marker. I don't want the welder to tell me that will warp the pan or what not. I have an alternative spot but that would require a longer return line. Taking it to the welder tomorrow, he says $150 to fix the intake manifold and weld the oil bung. Speaking of money, I did my taxes the other night and am getting ~$1400 back. That should be plenty to finish the car. I would hope more like $500 with the aluminum welding then downpipe/exhaust welding plus miscellaneous fluids, fasteners and fittings. |
Oh man! So, yet another night of no progress on the car, since again i'm stuck at work overnight. (Yay deadlines.) BUT- My Summit shipment got here, and it's almost as if they knew i'd be here, they included a free 5hr Energy in the goodie bag in one of the boxes!! So yeah, unblocked to finish and bleed clutch finally... if i ever get home. Gratuitous pic of awesome parts... stuck at work with me follows. |
Just like Christmas... |
I know, right? Installed the clutch line this morning when I got home from work before I went to bed. Just like christmas. |

If you bolt the pan down during the welding process, won't that (help) prevent warpage? |
Originally Posted By: aerosaaber If you bolt the pan down during the welding process, won't that (help) prevent warpage? I hope the welder will do that. I actually was advised to move the bung over/down a little from the original location. Which requires a new 10an line, doh. |

Man, i'm SHOCKED how many HF tools I own these days. they're way better than they used to be. |
*grumble* So i went to hook the coolant circuit up on the turbo. Had to reclock the center housing... then i fired some fittings i'd used last time on it... now i'm lacking the fittings i need to do it proper, and can't clock the center to clear the manifold with the drain hooked up. LOLwhoops. Waiting on new fittings, and i'll cut another proper length drainline outta that expensive fuckin' silicone drainline... grumble. |
Hang in there, I just went through pretty much the same thing. I'm NOT cutting this hose until everything is fitted. |
Got my "last" cough cough an fitting in the mail today and my oil pan bung and intake manifold welding are supposed to be complete tomorrow. I'm running out of excuses to finish this car. |

So you're ALMOST there after only 18 days? I guess telling you it couldn't be done was an effective strategy. |

Keep it up guys, I hadn't read this until just now but you're inspiring me to find some of the little crap I still need to do on the DSM. Track day is Sunday, w00t! |

I didn't get my manifold and oil pan back today. grumble grumble. He says Monday for sure... |

Woo...never figured it'd happen.. SvA accidental tech day! Endo came by, and we desnorkused his new forester, and put some neon time in.. Remote oil filter is placed, he pulled the coolant bottle, plotted where the battery will live..... Got the air cutter all up in his thousand mile forester, it was a productive afternoon! |
Scott y u no update? :P You get that pan on yet? My 3/8ths adapters for the turbo CHRA showed up last night. Need to tighten them tomorrow night. Engine mount showed up too, and it's half-assed installed. Battery tray is half-ass drilled as well, i nuked a battery mid-drill. |
Looks like I am a candidate for that job I mentioned, they're having me back for a drug screen and personality. So I've been doing some preparation for the actual work... I did however get my oil pan and intake manifold back yesterday afternoon. Woohoo! |
Awesome! |
Closing in on a month to go; today marks the first day in... 4 years maybe my car hasn't been on at least two jackstands. Not ready to go, but had to move it so my roommate could work on his car. Still need to machine the control arm bearing sleeves, and then I can mount the control arms again for real this time. Right now they're installed, but it's only so I could bolt wheels to the car. This was last week's project, still need to get crush washers for it; removing the old gooseneck oil filter and making it mate to a remote setup. Fits like this on the car. and scary realization of the evening... the neon plates expired in 2005! Jesus I need to get this done. |
bahahaha 7 years. |

Dude, it's been so long the car still has TEAMSLOW stickers on it ffs! |
This should be depressing you. |
Yes and no. Honestly, I'd be just as ok with starting a family, getting on with life and remembering the car in 10 more years. I could sit on this and just be happy to know I had a project whenever I want to tinker. It's been paid off since 99,all its costing is the space it takes. |

Amazingly few of those, actually! It's outside pressure making me finish it. Speaking of which, progress today. Made my new battery mount. Holding a PC680 where the washer bottle used to be. Remarkably annoying to get sorted there; there were about 4 layers of steel to drill through, then I decided to change the mounting direction (which is why the upper tab looks like dookie... it was supposed to be the front). |

i like it. looks cool on the slips. giterdone man! |

Seriously, right? Scott, you're down to the last month, and your last update was over a week ago. Curse you for finding gainful employment. |

Cmon man! I got outta your thread to let you get back in it! Whatchoo done?! |

Stick a fork in me guys. I've been interviewing for IT jobs and trying to learn IT "stuff". Once I land a job I'll get back on this. ARGH!!! |

cool thread guys , get your shit sorted and work on your car!!! nice work ACR |
Ahh, I missed this thread, this is awesome, but now another person has to say get on your shit! If it weren't for another buddy of mine pushing me, my cars would probably have sat for many more months. Matt, did you ever get your car re-registered? Scott any news on job front? |
Nah, not yet. Hung up waiting on roommate's car to move like discussed in the other thread. |
Went to one place to interview, then again to get a drug test, was a top two candidate but didn't get it. Went to another place just last week. Waiting to hear back. This REALLY kills my vacation time too. Argh. |

so, more time to work on the car then? good, git 'er dun! |
I'm ~40 resumes and 4 interviews in (not counting a few phone interviews). Somebody has to take me right? I've decided its my destiny to drive shitboxes and finish the Neon and Maverick with the money I'd be spending on a $20+ thousand new car. |

I know! I've been trying for Programmer/Developer jobs and that would be great but I kind of had an epiphany, the Business Analysts at my job make double what I make and don't do shit, its kind of a running joke. So I wouldn't mind to get in somewhere as a Business Analyst, give them my all for 40+ hours but if I did that I wouldn't have to learn 12 different new languages so I would have more time for cars too. Seems like a bag of win to me. Possibly more money and definitely more time for cars if I get such a position. Have a applied to a couple now with one phone interview and one in person. |

The rear wheels are on the ground as of tonight. I had upgraded to poly bushings, coilovers and a rear sway. I also plumbed a kickass fuel system, twin walbros outside the tank. I made the original in tank fuel pump assembly into a "sump" with dual pickups. Next I'll finish prepping the turbo engine to drop in. Baby steps... |
