So here is 0.000000006% of the shots I took during my first infant shoot. Please let me know what is good/bad. Shot with Canon 6d, 430exii off camera, and various lenses (100mm L macro, 24-105L, 135 f/2L, 50 1.4) wagon by Trench301, on Flickr In the Petals by Trench301, on Flickr In Good Hands by Trench301, on Flickr Foot in Hand by Trench301, on Flickr Finley 1 by Trench301, on Flickr By the Fire by Trench301, on Flickr Blue Blanket by Trench301, on Flickr Asleep BW by Trench301, on Flickr |

I really like the blue blanket one. On the first one, if you're forced to use a wrinkled sheet as a background, the key is to get the subject as far away from the sheet as possible. Then shoot at a wide aperture so the sheet gets blurred out. |

Thanks! That makes sense. Noted for next shoot. |

Several of those have a really cool feel which I don't think works for a sleeping baby/corpse. Just warm them up. |
By warm up, you're referring to white balance adjustments correct? |
Yep. Go crazy with WB on fashion or more artsy stuff, but for most portraiture cool tones wash you out, and that's not attractive on a naked baby. |

a lot of the shots have a hot/specular flash look to them, like this one. WB looks warm...like a mix of daylight and tungsten. limbs could be better positioned to hide the weird crotch shot. the green pacifier sticks out like a sore thumb in terms of color scheme. odd looking edge light on the right leg. wagon by Trench301, on Flickr best shot of the bunch. lighting, color In the Petals by Trench301, on Flickr back looks weird due to the right hand covering up the armpit lines. In Good Hands by Trench301, on Flickr blurry Foot in Hand by Trench301, on Flickr looks flat and monster lit. think in terms of window lighting. where would a window be? Finley 1 by Trench301, on Flickr too much fire pit. just get enough to get the idea of setting. artificial vignette effect. By the Fire by Trench301, on Flickr weird angle Blue Blanket by Trench301, on Flickr yea...the b/w, lack of pacifier, and flowers is giving that corpse feel like someone mentioned. Asleep BW by Trench301, on Flickr[/quote] try to soften up your light. either w/ modifiers, or a white wall/board to bounce into. specular light will give a feeling of outdoors. so when it's in an indoor setting, it looks a little odd. positioning w/ the idea of window lighting is a good starting point. |

shot 1, toes cut off, focus is on the radio flyer logo, not her eyes. 2 looks a little weird with the flower cutting off half her face 4, the shutter speed was too slow 5 and 6 not a fan of the crop. get tighter or wider 7 is corepsesque and 8 i'm not wild about the reverse vignette. but, i don't look at a lot of baby shots so what do it know. those are outsider impressions. i tried to shoot some once for a friend and it was lame. laaaaaame. |
very basic thing get FUCKING LOWER. you gotta be level with THEM. anything looking down looks lame unless it's a complete overhead shot. |
My personal preference is to add a very subtle light grain to the BW ones to give a sense of texture |

So I realize that I deleted most of the original pics...but I did a second new born shoot and I figured I would share to show progress. Lilly 4 by Trench301, on Flickr Red Sox Hat by Trench301, on Flickr LillyBooks_3 by Trench301, on Flickr Lilly 12 by Trench301, on Flickr Father is a lawyer and family is very Irish so that explains the law book shot and Boston hat... |

Try them in B&W or reduced color. |

1. decent - but I'm distracted slightly by the reflections in her eyes. 2. really good. Composition is good, expression is good, color is good. 3. composition seems a little heavy handed on this one. 4. not a keeper, facial expression is bordering on a negative emotion and the background yellows are overpowering. Just my opinions, ymmv. |
