What's the latest with Internet providers?

TekSavvy just jacked up their rates by 20% which is pretty crazy, was paying $49 (now $59) for 30 down/unlimited.

The service has been excellent for the 5 years I've used them, I think I've had a total of 2-3 outages in 5 years that were resolved within hours. Speed has never been an issue and I don't want to deal with new modem setup/etc.

That said, is it worth switching because of price or are other internet providers around the same?

Awesome, thanks. Looks like $39/month gets me better than what I have now. Need to confirm modem/router are accepted and I am switching.

How do you find their speeds? Their posted speeds seem significantly lower than what Rogers/Bell provide or rather advertise, as experienced speed is not exactly the same as advertised speed.

Re: What's the latest with Internet providers?

I'm only on 30D/5U, no issues. Speed tests regularly show hitting those targets. Occasionally YouTube lags, but that's pretty rare. I don't stream from other platforms but I'd probably go up to the 75/10 plan if I was.

For Risky:
https://www.ebox.ca/en/compatible-modems/

FWIW: Some RFD people had issues getting signed up with eBox this summer. Their billing is a bit odd for the first few cycles so prepare for that, as they bill everyone from the first to the last of every month. If you start service in the middle of the month that has to be corrected for on their end.

Another option is Start.ca. I haven't used them, but they're my backup option if eBox ever let me down. They're a bit more expensive but reviews are all solid.

For high-speed that might be true. I don't game, or stream, or really have any need for a 150, 300, 500, or 1GB speed. I had 75 for a while on a promo and it was faster, but do I really need CSi and Reddit to load faster?

Re: What's the latest with Internet providers?

Called Ebox. The promo I wanted is for DSL and I currently have cable so my modem isn't compatible.

There is a $50 Setup Fee, $15 Shipping fee for the modem they ship you for free rental for 12 months (duration of promo) and the part that made me put the brakes on is they said they have to run a credit check on me unless I buy the modem direct from them for $120. Don't want credit check over $40, wtf. Anyway I am still considering them, I can't figure out what DSL modems are compatible, everything listed is for Cable internet.

the mac address on that modem is likely locked to bell. you'd have to pay the bell tax to get them to release the mac address in order for you to use it w ebox.

something for you to keep in mind.

were on 150/10 as a family and we have had 0 problems, streaming is basically all we use (no cable boxes)

typical morning is someone streaming youtube on main tv, little one on tablet watching youtube while eating breakfast and both my wife and I using laptops/phones getting ready for work

sometimes my wife does online google classroom while my son is still streaming youtube and no buffering so even 150 is plenty

i was with ebox DSL and have the modem still kicking around that you can have for free if you want it. I was on the 50meg service.
I'm still with Ebox but switched to their cable service back in June because I wanted something faster due to working from home most likely long term. I've never had an issue with ebox service and have been with them since 2015.

come on bro \:\)

i mean for the same price you can go with rogers. I looked at the cannet prices and they are basically on par with what rogers regular discounts are. At least you have decent service with rogers. (I had a facebook chat going on monday after having some internet outages on sunday during the storm and they were very prompt and looked into it right away)

There is no Rogers or Fido deal that comes close to cannet, do share if you have a link. I couldn't find one. And I am not going to get a 'bundle' with cable and other nonsense to get their good internet 'deal'.

Fido had something decent, slower speed, but required modem rental and it came to just under $50/month. I also don't think it was unlimited.

Re: What's the latest with Internet providers?

The deals aren't advertised, but if you go on facebook chat or through their support page and ask what they have they usually make you a good deal, either 12 month contract or now they changed month to month for me.

When i started I was on the 150/15 plan for $35 a month

now I'm on the 300/20 plan for $65 tax in a month as it went up a bit but still better than cannet at $69 + tax

lots of threads on RFD about what plans you can get and how to get them

their offerings are
cable 75 $34
cable 150 $39

Rogers 150 $35
Rogers 300 $57

unless my math is wrong not sure how those are not "better" deals

Re: What's the latest with Internet providers?

If you have home phone or cableTV going on ...

You can lower your overall payments by going VoIP for phone, or Android pirate IPTV box.

For me:
- ~$2CAD/mth for VoIP (+ 1-time $100 VoIP hardware) -- http://www.voip.ms
- ~$6CAD/mth per IPTV box (+ 1-time ~$160 for IPTV box) -- OK2 servers

Rarely use the 'landline', but wife needs to fax when she's WFH.

re: cheap internet provider rates, can't help you there. I'm w/Cogeco (no Rogers around here) ... and I'm coming up for renewal soon FML.

The VoIP thing might be a good idea for your line of work -- you can order multiple phone numbers, 1-800 numbers, even fax-specific numbers (that'll PDF the faxes) ... and, super cheap.

I only have internet with them and have no issue renewing after 12 months
even after the initial promotion is done, when they bump up in $$ its still cheaper than most of the competition so I just renew at their next price. This last one was the easiest. I just asked what deals they had and they gave me the deals posted and I said sure sign me up, less than 5 min of back and forth chat on FB. I'm not looking to rawfish them on deals as long as its in line or cheaper than most of the third party deals.

the shit i had to go through just to cancel Bell internet.

so far fido is pretty good, minus the janky ass temporary line that is against/around my fence that will be buried in 2021.

can we talk about speeds/devices? at first i had bell 50, now i have fido 75 and the jump in speed is useful. i can have up to 5 devices when i'm not home running, kids ipad & laptop, womans working from home so that's her laptop, phone and smart tv going, and if i'm home then that's my phone and probably ps4 going too, plus aquarium is wireless so with all those 75 is keeping up pretty decently.

This one time, at bandcamp, when I first moved into my Markham home, they grafted a line from my neighbour (it was winter -- no way to dig.) ; it looked like I was stealing internet.

Kept calling every 4-6 mths, eventually they 'lost track' of it, no record of it, and ... ended up selling the home 5-6 yrs later with the ghetto line still there, never buried.

My temp line was buried last month.

Day 1
-In June People redoing the driveway cut the line underground by accident. (no big deal because the line was going to be replaced anyway since Rogers said it needed to be upgraded with heavier gauge from previous work order)

Day 2
-Temp line was set.

Day3
- They actually came to bury the line, but just small tool guys who said they have to cut the driveway. They suggested it to be bored underground below driveway

-2 weeks later, people came to mark the grass with spray paint.

-4 months later they showed up again to mark the grass.

-2 weeks after that they actually buried it.

Check your order status here.
It's not always up to date though.

Re: What's the latest with Internet providers?

I had some bad contractors cut my internet line while working on a neighbours house and because i was with 3rd party (Ebox) it took Rogers 8 days to come out and fix the line. I waited 3 days to no avail so I called Bell and they installed next day. I was still waiting for rogers for another 4 days after my Bell was installed.

I'm working from home so 3 days without being able to work would could have potentially been a full week is a no go. Good thing I called Bell instead. I cancelled with ebox the next day after the line was finally "fixed"

I'll likely never go 3rd party ever again. Bell is expensive yes, but it works well and is fast. We use the internet all day everyday. Why cheap out on it? Would I rather pay less? of course I would. But I'd also like to have service when bad things happen. Its ok....i'll cut something else out of my life in order to make up that difference from the price I was paying before to the price I am paying now.
