Chinese New year corona special $4.

Do you think it's gonna be like the sars epedemic?
Face masks are selling out lol
I remember when Sars hit I didn't eat dimsum for a year lol
Apparently it has reached Montreal and they are saying it's most likely here already.
Im in Markham and I could only imagine what a full outbreak would look like.

https://globalnews.ca/news/6462626/coronavirus-toronto-hospital/

 Quote:
Ontario health officials have announced that a “presumptive” case of coronavirus has been confirmed at Toronto’s Sunnybrook hospital, marking the first such case in Canada.

In an evening press conference at Queen’s Park, officials said they were made aware of the case Saturday afternoon.

The victim is a man in his 50s who recently travelled to Wuhan, China, which is believed to be the epicentre of the outbreak.

His condition is stable, officials said.

The illness has sickened more than 1,200 people and killed at least 41 in China.

Australia and Malaysia reported their first cases Saturday — four each– and Japan, its third.

France confirmed three cases Friday, the first in Europe, and the U.S. identified its second, a woman in Chicago who had returned from China.

Apparently the CCP told healthcare practitioners to sweep it under the carpet, tell people who displayed symptoms that it was just a cold and stay home. They didn't want the public to panic, so these old folks just went home thinking it was nothing serious.

We were suppose to go to Fisherman's Wharf Lobster place in Markham/scarborough today but decided to stay in the area instead.

It was almost a year long plan for my bro's bday since he comes to Canada once a year. He's gotta go back to Korea in a couple of days and we couln't find the mask anywhere.
Ended up getting one at Benjamin Moores.

We also just flew back from Costa Rica yesterday.
The crews were wearing masks and I didn't know why.

Meh, let them get Bird Flu.
Don’t want it? Wash your fucking hands, and bark at any asshole who doesn’t.

I was at Sunnybrook when the crew brought in the first patient. The medics and nurses at the Brook did everything right for containment, but in the end to stop the spread, it’s just basic on our part.

People trying to steal hand sanitizer from hospitals but don’t even wash hands.
Yesterday I had to tell people at Humber River “that mask you just put on does nothing to protect you... it’s for the person who has a fever so it decreases the radius of potential droplet contamination.”
So they took it off.

If you have a fever, stay the fuck home. And still wash your hands! 😂

People are cattle.

My big concern would be food in case grocery stores are shut down due to quarantined employees/etc, aside from that there isn't much you can do in a situation like this imo.

I don't understand why people stock up on water, unless you are buying water by the gallons you are wasting your time. If our water supply is compromised we are all fucked in days, then you gotta go to whoever has well access, rely on water purification tablets, etc.

I am not a prepper, have basics, but most shit people do is just stupid, which is right on par with emotional overreaction.

I have tickets to the Raptors in 3 weeks and tickets to the Marlies at Scotiabank next week. We'll see if the latter gets cancelled. As for the Raptors, at present my guess is the games will be rescheduled as the season has been paused/suspended and not cancelled. They may choose to just issue refunds and continue when/if they resume.

Additionally, I went to Costso yesterday. They had lot's of toilet paper. I no longer fear of getting the runs without having reinforcements.

Man what a bunch of degenerates everywhere. I usually do groceries mid week, I was going to do them last night but because of all the dumbass corona shit i postponed until today.

Sure enough, today is exponentially worse. Around 5pm I roll up to 1 of the Markham walmarts, fucking RAMMED. Parking lot jammed, I've never seen it like that ever. Go inside, I put the first item in when i caught the size of the lines. nope.gif

Went home, looked at google live traffic of various stores and had to drive to Stouffville, which got as bad as Markham by the time I got there. An hour later I was out, but shelves were getting sparse and for no real reason. Got my shit and left, went to a local No Frills by my house that I thought would be fairly quiet because it's small, nope, all rammed and the owner was talking about how his other No Frills in Scarborough just got shutdown as it got overrun by people and they couldn't handle everyone.

It's like real life furball out there. FUCK

We just always have that stuff, not because of apocalypse planning but because I actually like those canned soups. Especially in winter. Sure its loaded with sodium but we don't eat them everyday.

Re: Chinese New year corona special $4.

I'm working from home this week and for the next 2 weeks at least. I also find there is less traffic on the road. For me, I'm trying to do my part and stay home and avoid going out. I did have to go get some meat from the butcher just to have something and some meds for my father this week as well. But other than those 2 excursions I've been home and inside.

I hope Canada gets a handle of this. The idea of working from home is better than the reality of it. We do the whole VPN thing too but it was never designed for 90% of the staff to be on it all at the same time. So it's a bit of a challenge but we're working through it.

I opted to purchase groceries this week for delivery from superstore but their service is pretty shitty and I am forced to go pick up instead. Hopefully its an easy transition to pick up as I'd really rather not be stuck in a crowd of people. If I see that, i'm out. Next time I'll try Metro's delivery service.

Anybody still buying food for delivery? I've cut that out as well. Cooking at home for the most part. And eating less I might add. I'll probs end up losing a few lbs over the next couple of week. Thats not a bad thing at all though.

Where the fuck do these people live? I get it that not everyone is on social media, but don't you watch the news? You don't need to be on IG, FB etc to know what the fuck is going on in the world.

People are so oblivious. "I hope this doesn't last another 2 weeks". Really? What the fuck do you think will get accomplished in 2 weeks? Even if there were ZERO reported cases today, do you think things will go back to normal?

People need to die en mass and then maybe people will take things seriously. Nah, no chance. Look at Italy and people are still going on with their daily lives with no fucks given.

/end rant

Also, moving the bar on "resolved" cases.

 Quote:
Dr. Yaffe on changes to criteria for resolved cases: “If the case is not hospitalized, not a healthcare worker, they recover/feel fine and it’s been 14 days since they became ill, we are saying they can be considered resolved." Previously needed 2 neg tests 24 hrs apart.

We have two levels of PPE.

Level 1 PPE is a lower level gown, and a basic mask.
Level 4 PPE is full wrap-around non-porous gown, N95 respirator, thigh-high boots, visor, KKK hood, goggles.

Level 4 is only used for COVID confirmed. I don't have a place to upload what I look like in it. Would like to.

In addition, certain medical procedures are being knocked down the priority list. They're called Aerosol Generating Medical Procedures.
- BVM ventilation
- yankauer airway suction
- CPR (yes... CPR)
- endotracheal intubation (the thing with the blade and the light)
- all nebulized medications (like ventolin)

So if a person has COVID, and they're in cardiac arrest, the CPR and BVM ventilations will render the COVID aerosol which the research now shows will remain aerosol for 8 hours before coming out of the air.
So even though intubation is an AGMP, I am intubating early in order to protect the rest of the people who are helping me resuscitate the patient because once tubed, the airway is closed circuit.
To do this, I either kick everyone out of the room, or I send everyone as far away from the patient's mouth as possible and don level 4 PPE to perform the procedure. Everyone in the room must also be at LEAST wearing goggles and N95.

The other thing the media isn't talk about (and surprisingly social media is the driving force behind it) is that hospitals are severely lacking in PPE.
Nurses are being told to wear the SAME mask all day. One mask per day is fucking retarded and dangerous.
The other thing, we are running out of ventilators.
Also, hospitals are turning certain wings into ICU wings now to accommodate the intubated COVD+ patients.
Some hospitals have so many ventilated patients they have 5 patients on ONE ventilator. That means they have to see what patients have similar breathing volumes and put them together to share. It is FUCKED.

So while the press talks about positive cases (which means fuck all)... the hospitals and paramedics are the ones who are talking about the actual state of things.

i'm at work, full PPE, screening ppl for covid assessment. good times.

People may not wanna social distance, but they really fucking need to.
Stay safe guys... it is real.

forgive me if I'm asking a stupid question, but we hear stories about other countries trying different anti viral medications used primarily to treat other things but seem to have a positive impact on some covid patients...whats stopping canada from trying these as a last resort? It's not a stupid question at all.
So any drug that goes on the market is subjected to something called an RCT (Randomized Control Trial.) That consists of the target drug and placebos... all packaged the same and the provider doesn't know what they're giving.
There's ethics issues with giving drugs that aren't actually drugs... there's also health concerns if you haven't got a large enough capture to determine whether the medication is even effective. Efficacy is a huge thing... you're not gonna just dump something out there and see if it fits. It has to be tested... vaccines are customized to the strain and genetics of the virus in question.
Controls need to be in place... especially when it'll go out at such a large scope.
Hell, Trump was all about Azithromycin... which is an antibiotic. That doesn't nothing for viruses

It's not like adding salt and flavour to taste when it comes to medicine.
I don't have a solid answer but there are podcasts on why RCTs are needed to start with drug therapies.

Vas, the dumb calls are still there but it seems that they don't even want to go and just want to be "assessed" so we end up doing that.
There are plenty of people who might need to go on any other occasion but they don't want to even though they're actually sick. Not sick enough to be in the acute area, but sick enough that they should probably see a doctor at some point quite soon. But they still don't go because "I don't want the covid."

Imagine trying to start an IV or intubate someone in this thing (level 4)

Re: Chinese New year corona special $4.

Wife's supplies are fucked HARD.

~10 days worth of N95s, even less for face masks (with and w/o shields.). They reduced use by ~50% last week, this week to 25%, as no shipments for at least 2 weeks \:\|

This reduction to 25% is also worse as some depts are only now starting to use masks.

This is in addition to a shit ton of other measures they're put in place in the weeks prior: external staging areas in tents, external tents for COVID-19 suspected cases, security guards and nurses checking temps for anyone coming in, etc. I'm guessing blast shields (i.e. plexiglass) are also installed in areas where there wasn't prior. (i.e. grocery stores are all over this now.)

I've seen photos (on fb) of hospitals with brown bags on a table, each one labelled with a name. That's your ration for the day. 1 mask per person, re-use it by putting it back in the bag etc. Showed it to the wife, she's like yep they're doing that now. (*Not 100% sure if she meant yeah they're doing it at all hospitals across the US/Canada, or if her hospital.)

Have a physician couple in TO; come in thru a diff entrance, blocked off with chairs/etc (so the kids don't go in that area.). Straight to the shower in basement, clothes straight into the basement laundry. Things wiped down before they take a breath, and settle in to home life. This is daily. \:\|

Peeps in Asia wash their disposable cotton(?) face masks, then let them dry in the sun \:\| (No money, no supply, etc.)

For those people who still have to work in grocery stores or transit or healthcare or whatever, that still have human interactions on the daily, how safe do you feel going home that you aren't bringing anything back? De-con in the garage with lysol wipes? Strip down to nothing and straight to shower? when it gets hotter out hanging in the garage and backyard may become a thing
I work in security and told them I can't continue to do non emergency work at this time so either accommodate with working remotely or I would just go into self isolation, so right now Im doing as much as I can from home and only going into locations with very little people or closed up and we can get access if needed.

defeat the virus? no not even entertaining that (though some might believe lol)
its more to promote a healthy environment and help your lungs and immune system so if you do happen to catch it, hopefully you are able to stay at home and not crowd the hospitals even more.

Some essential oils are even linked to helping some strains of pneumonia so taking anything at this time to help is worth it.

ive been using essential oils in a diffuser for years now, just changing around the oils for different things

I fell safe coming home.
I shower at the station before coming home... and come home in my civi's.
I don't understand medics who go home in their uniform... it's fucked.
It's one thing to go into work in it, because that is hopefully a fresh wash and you have clothes to change into after work, but there's no excuse for wearing your shit home.

If you're wearing your PPE, you and your families will be fine.
Do you have eyewear to protect against droplet contamination? That and a surgical mask is all you need unless you're in an area where aerosol generating medical procedures are occurring.

Protect eyes, mouth and nose.

ER people dealing with sick and dying COVID patients, plus the normal car accident, injured, etc and EMTs walking into an unknown call get all my respect.

I get really irritated when I see some soccer mom wearing gloves and a mask when the medics and nurses face shortages.

Not performing CPR would go against the very oath they took. I'm sure they take every precaution to ensure they do it safely, or maybe for once, defer to the firefighters and give them a chance to feel important. 😁

You know who'll stopped doing CPR? Family members. "How I know they ain't got da 'rona? I bet they died cause da 'rona!" Guaranteed.

Re: Chinese New year corona special $4.

The whole premise of 'no need to wear a mask UNLESS you are sick or caring for someone who is sick', is true, to a point.

- You don't know when you are sick, i.e. usually this starts asymptomatic, at which point you're already dangerous to others
- Some go thru COVID-19 all the way without any symptoms (cue article in Iceland where 1% of those tested were positive, and of that 1%, 50% of them said they had no symptoms.)
- Wearing a mask also protects you from touching your own damn face, in the event you touched a contaminated surface.
- The 'no mask' thing is also so there's supply for those in true need. So in times of rationing, it makes sense to go with the 'no mask' logic.

i agree with those points

what about wearing masks over and over and becoming saturated with the virus or other bacteria in itself. I fear people will try and do that and end up getting sick because of that and touching the mask and then their face etc

agree but as mentioned lots of people are sick but dont show it so they go to work if their business is deemed "essential" and the cycle continues

not to mention every company out there that is deemed "essential" so owners are like "yup lets continue to work"

Sorry, I didn't realize there was a picture there initially.

Ok, so no CPR is in fact being "performed" in patients who are covid positive until paramedics arrive.
The reason is because CPR is an aerosol generating medical procedure and in performing it, you are rendering the virus airborne, which is the worst possible thing to do... especially when it remains airborne for several hours even when the case is over.

We did a cardiac arrest today.
I had CPR withheld until I intubated the patient.
Intubation, though an aerosol procedure, closes the airway circuit, thus rendering the environment free of aerosol for the remainder of the call (which can last a while if it's workable.)

Once intubation is established, start CPR, IV, drugs, defibrillation.
Closing the circuit is the most important thing... because it protects the team.

Sadly, Fire is gonna get roasted here, but I honestly don't care because you don't have to be me to see a problem with what happened.
Everyone in the world is aware that there is a shortage of PPE. Specifically N95s.
So we get on scene and fire shows up. There's a crew with the patient already... I'm the backup.
The fire crew isn't downstairs with the crew... they're outside.
The captain says "We're only going to send one in to limit exposure."
Fair... this is a good protocol for them.
So then please tell me why ALL of you are standing OUTSIDE with N95s on???
It won't be worn again... it shouldn't even be out. It should still be in the packaging in your pocket. You just wasted THREE masks.

For Christ's sakes. I even asked the Captain in a snarky tone "then why are you all wearing N95s?"
I didn't care about the answer because I was putting my shit on to go in... but like really come the fuck on

Also, we are calling for early pronouncement in systolic patients with unknown downtown.. which essentially means no upfront CPR because of aerosol.

Fire is useless more than ever now because they're so fucking scared to put on the big shoes and do medical calls like nurses and doctors (well, in fairness, it's their union who says they're amazing and needed on medicals.)

Re: Chinese New year corona special $4.

The moral of the story here is we all need to be careful and should only be doing things that are absolutely necessary.

I am not driving anywhere, going anywhere, or doing anything that I absolutely don't have to. I'm even going as far as being extra careful when using knives. The very last thing I want to do is accidentally hurt myself in any way and require hospital attention. So the safest thing to do now is absolutely nothing. Its all about risk, the only way to lower your risk is to reduce or eliminate an activity. I didn't even think about "routine" car accidents until someone mentioned else here mentioned it. The reason that one hit close to home is because yesterday I went to pick up the Mini from my brothers place and brought it home from winter storage. It was nice out so I took the long route home. Not even thinking about the possibility of a car accident, which is scary enough in a normal circumstance! Sure it was a nice day out but I saw SO many people hanging out, chilling with each other. Mind you this was in a lower income area I was driving through (Jane/Wilson) but still. Seems like people just aren't getting it. Its crazy to me.

This is our life for the next 6 months.....I pray to God everyday that the world get a hold of this.

What is happening in China? I thought I read a few weeks ago that they've finally got some kind of control on it? I'm not checking up on the stats of this thing everyday anymore. Its too depressing for me, and raises anxiety levels. I guess you could say in a way i'm burying my head in the sand but realistically I'm home and limiting my exposure anyway. I don't need to know that, for example, 1000 people died in one day from this.

Trump is a winner on handling it.

January 22: “We have it totally under control. It’s one person coming in from China. It’s going to be just fine.”

February 2: “We pretty much shut it down coming in from China.”

February 24: “The Coronavirus is very much under control in the USA… Stock Market starting to look very good to me!”

February 25: “CDC and my Administration are doing a GREAT job of handling Coronavirus.”

February 25: “I think that's a problem that’s going to go away… They have studied it. They know very much. In fact, we’re very close to a vaccine.”

February 26: “The 15 (cases in the US) within a couple of days is going to be down to close to zero.”

February 26: “We're going very substantially down, not up.”

February 27: “One day it’s like a miracle, it will disappear.”

February 28: “We're ordering a lot of supplies. We're ordering a lot of, uh, elements that frankly we wouldn't be ordering unless it was something like this. But we're ordering a lot of different elements of medical.”

February 28: “Now the Democrats are politicizing the coronavirus, you know that, right? Coronavirus, they’re politicizing it. We did one of the great jobs. You say, ‘How’s President Trump doing?’ They go, ‘Oh, not good, not good.’ They have no clue. They don’t have any clue. They can’t even count their votes in Iowa.” “They tried the impeachment hoax. That was on a perfect conversation. They tried anything. They tried it over and over. They’d been doing it since you got in. It’s all turning. They lost. It’s all turning. Think of it. Think of it. And this is their new hoax.”

March 2: “You take a solid flu vaccine, you don't think that could have an impact, or much of an impact, on corona?”

March 2: “A lot of things are happening, a lot of very exciting things are happening and they’re happening very rapidly.”

March 4: “If we have thousands or hundreds of thousands of people that get better just by, you know, sitting around and even going to work — some of them go to work, but they get better.”

March 5: “I NEVER said people that are feeling sick should go to work.”

March 5: “The United States… has, as of now, only 129 cases… and 11 deaths. We are working very hard to keep these numbers as low as possible!”

March 6: “I think we’re doing a really good job in this country at keeping it down… a tremendous job at keeping it down.”

March 6: “Anybody right now, and yesterday, anybody that needs a test gets a test. They’re there. And the tests are beautiful…. the tests are all perfect like the letter was perfect. The transcription was perfect. Right? This was not as perfect as that but pretty good.”

March 6: “I like this stuff. I really get it. People are surprised that I understand it… Every one of these doctors said, ‘How do you know so much about this?’ Maybe I have a natural ability. Maybe I should have done that instead of running for president.”

March 6: “I don't need to have the numbers double because of one ship that wasn't our fault.”

March 8: “We have a perfectly coordinated and fine tuned plan at the White House for our attack on CoronaVirus.”

March 9: “This blindsided the world.”

Edit: March 9: "The Fake News Media and their partner, the Democrat Party, is doing everything within its semi-considerable power (it used to be greater!) to inflame the CoronaVirus situation, far beyond what the facts would warrant.”

March 10: "It will go away. Just stay calm. It will go away."

March 13: National Emergency Declaration

March 13: “I don't take responsibility at all”

March 15: "TODAY IS A NATIONAL DAY OF PRAYER. GOD BLESS EVERYONE!"

March 16: "I give myself a 10 out of 10"

March 16: “I’ve always known this is a, this is a real, this is a pandemic, I’ve felt it was a pandemic long before it was called a pandemic” source

March 17: "It snuck up on us." source

March 22: “It is absolutely critical that Americans continue to follow the federal government’s guidelines. So important about social distancing, non-essential travel, and hand-washing.”

March 23: Democratic concerns have focused on a $500 billion funding program Republicans want to create for loans and loan guarantees, with some Democrats calling it a “slush fund” that lacks any oversight because the Treasury Department would have broad discretion over who receives the money. Asked about this Monday evening, Trump responded, “I’ll be the oversight.” The vote Monday was 49 to 46, well short of the 60-vote threshold needed to advance the legislation for a final debate.

March 24: “THE CURE CANNOT BE WORSE (by far) THAN THE PROBLEM!”

Woke up a couple of hours ago.
Just when I thought I escaped covid for a day... we got one (a diagnosed positive) at around 10pm.
Then forced overtime due to call volume. There were a lot of echoes (echo is the highest priority call on the list.)
One of which was the MVC at Islington and Steeles.
We were a bit far from it, but 5 minutes after that call went over the air, we got banged for a cardiac arrest.

Soooo... 15 hour shift and thank God I'm off and got to sleep in lol.
Today is laundry, groceries, cleaning...
Back to work Monday night.

On a happier note... the community in Downsview put this up across from our station so we'd see it every time we pulled out of the driveway. That was really nice. Wilson between Keele and Jane.

did you actually wait? it's not bad once you're in tho. shelves are stock. plenty of space to walk around. no scum bag families crowding around samples of frozen pizzas and hummus, even less scumbag having sunday brunch at the costco food court.

Yes I'm curious if you waited. I went early Saturday morning and despite there being a long lineup, I was in in about 15 mins. Lots of space, not crowded at all and everything was in stock.

I did a "curbside pick up" at Canadian tire the day before they were forced closed. It was a nightmare then, I can only imagine the fockery of it all now. Canadian Tire's web site is so archaic. Their online presence is abysmal imo.

Re: Chinese New year corona special $4.

The way people are treated at "pick up" is insane, everyone running around like a chicken.

The process is to show up to front of Canadian Tire, call number on sign and stay in your car and it will be delivered to you.

20+ people sitting in their cars calling the number, no one can get through. If you walk up to the store you are yelled at to go back into your car and call the number which no one picks up or is busy.

After 45 minutes of the above when they take your "order" to bring to you they notify you it was sent to another Canadian tire 20 minutes away. That's when you politely start your car and fucking SMASH the gear lever into D to go and repeat the process again somewhere else.

Went to Costco yesterday to pick up the prescription.
I think about 15-20 min wait. I thought that was bad then I heard a buddy waited 1hr to get in. I think in Markham.

So much paper towel and toilet paper in stock, they could build a Costco sized castle.

It looks like Canada has done a good job with flattening the curve.
Yes there are obviously deaths and will continue to be deaths, but in the grand scheme of things, everyone is doing their part and the numbers show it.

We had the good fortune of seeing it coming from Europe and we shut things down a lot earlier.
On top of that, we're not as stubborn as Americans and actually listened to what the Government asked us to do so we didn't blow up due to non-conformity.

If we keep this up, hopefully they'll lift the restrictions and we can get back to our daily lives.

In and out, no fuss, in about ... 5-7 minutes? (They fucked up my name and so had to run back in,)

thats nice to hear, especially coming from someone like yourself who sees this day in day out

unfortunately after reading many responses online from people in the US (facebook groups I'm part of for work) it's pretty clear the US has no concept on whats going on and sort of remind me of mini Trumps. It's sad when most think this will pass soon and they dont really have to stay home, stay inside etc, most just keep working and doing their thing until someone gets sick.

I just let everything sit for a day or two (produce in particular) so if there is a trace of the virus it dies on its own.

I thought about using soap to wash produce and I decided that we are now entering diminishing returns in terms of "safety".

I think that's fair.
It's redundant if you're washing your hands or using hand sanitizer after your'e done... but you're picking stuff up too and that could theoretically transfer.
Vas has it right as far as letting certain things sit for 2 days. It's extreme, but if you're not gonna wash it, then that's reasonable practice.

My thing is gloves.
Why in the fuck are people wearing gloves?
Do you know how frequently healthcare providers change gloves? That's why they're effective.
These people are wearing the same gloves all over the place... just spreading shit.
I saw sheep waiting for Shoppers to open. gloves on... masks on.
Hey I understand the mask.. you're protecting people from yourself (lol I know that's not why they're wearing it but hey it works.)

But the gloves you put on and walk into shoppers... touching doors, touching product... paying... touching doors again, opening your car door. Maybe you take them off (I've seem otherwise ) but then put them back on to go to another store... spreading shit lol.

Fucking stop with the gloves.

I do this too.
Also let some stuff hang out without touching for 5-6 days if possible. Stuff like noodles and condiments. I don't really need that stuff right away so it's fine. I also don't reuse the plastic bags anymore. They go right into recycling.

Nations grocery not only make it mandatory that you wear a mask inside, if you show up without anything covering your face, they will give you one. Kind of them, instead of forcing you to buy one for $0.50, etc.

Can't for the life of me get the fam to understand this shit, and I'm getting made the bad guy for being paranoid, neurotic, etc. WTF. (the fam in RHill/MHam are freaking out like the rest of the Asians, so do stay at home for the most part.)

Family reuse the same mask over and over (non-N95. We do have some thicker ones, and then there's the standard thin blue ones), keep it in a bag in the car, etc...

Wife is thick in the head and thinks the basic hand-washing bit is enough. Reasoning with her just doesn't seem to get it, and she pulls this "if any of us (in the family) get it, we're all already infected, so this bullshit about isolating within the home from each other make no sense" (I've been trying to set up contingency plans of exactly what room and how to isolate one of us in the event we need to do so.)

Has this bullshit idea that if I want to disinfect the door knob, it's my problem, and she can walk in and out with her hands touching anything, because she already disinfected it with sanitizer etc... FML.

I only use gloves at the gas station. Your not gonna get the virus through your hands but gas pumps are dirty in a normal circumstance lol, let alone this. I've seen people get out of their car wipe their snotty nose with their hand and then grab the pump.

I get out of the car, put glove on my right hand only. Use that hand to touch the pump and enter pin etc. Then I use the non glove hand with paper towel to pull out cc. Wrap cc in new paper and put in pocket. Finish filling with glove hand. Once full, I hang up pump and remove glove into garbage immediately. Then close gas door and get back inside car. I have a small bottle of sanitizer that I use just in case. Then drive away......never would I have thought I'd be living like this.

But it would require people to continue being mindful of what they do when it comes to coughing into their elbow, washing their damn hands regularly like they teach their kids to do (but seems lost in adulthood), and keeping a reasonable distance from most others in an attempt to create that space.
But no. Everyone is a stupid motherfucker who is out for themselves and THAT is why we can't open shit up yet.
And for that reason, we actually have to get the case and death counts low enough that the curve is considered flattened... because we're not capable as a society, to be responsible and do things the right way.
Stay home when you're sick. Physically distance within reason/application. Don't lick toilets. Wear a mask if you're sick and have to go out (like to your appointments.)
Not hard... but somehow, it's completely lost on 90% of the population.

I hate that.
I hate that those are the reasons that we really can't open life up because we can't rely on the general public to actually do THEIR part. Everyone's out for themselves.

I just got back from work. For a short portion of the day, I was among a fairly large group of first responders up at Humber River Hospital showing thanks and appreciation for our nurses, doctors, respiratory therapists, environmental services, porters, etc...
I look on social media (yeah that was my fault) and I see people criticizing everyone for drawing crowds.
First of all, assholes, this was for the hospital staff.
Secondly, Jesus Christ, LITERALLY everyone I saw was distanced from each other except for the nurses... but they're allowed to be side by side since they essentially live on top of each other when they're inside the hospital.
So don't chirp them for coming out and receiving what is rightfully theirs.

Give it a rest... bunch of motherfuckers.

Re: Chinese New year corona special $4.

Many, many lemmings are like: Yeah yeah, just like the news said, we just have to wait for the vaccine. Everything will go back to normal.

When was the last time you've seen the world shutdown like this motherfucker, over an enemy you cannot see?

I then ask them: How has China set their new 'normal'? i.e. how have they started re-opening and getting back to something close to pre-COVID-19?

Forget China. Think Taiwan, South Korea. Singapore. They got back to normal by leveraging, and the people allowing, the use of contact-tracing, support and belief in their govt to be prepared, loss of some privacy for the greater good, etc.

Note: Singapore isn't doing especially hot right now -- they're under a month-long 'circuit-breaker', i.e. stay-at-home mandate, with outbreaks now particularly in dorm settings, and foreign workers. But, their initial part of the COVID era was pretty tame thanks to the precautions/countermeasures set forth.

(I've read stories (about China) how you basically need a QR code on your phone to go/leave certain places. When you get on a subway, each subway car has a diff QR code, etc. If you want to enter a restaurant, not only must your temp be taken, but you need to show your QR code to indicate that you're not under quarantine, etc. Which, all goes into a national database.)

Re: Chinese New year corona special $4.

If everyone did the right thing, there would be no need for any rules or regulations. Except that what one person thinks is right is not going to line up with what about person thinks. Society has to operate on the lowest common denominator, "Caution, cup contains hot beverage" type shit, then set rules to that.

Things should not open up yet. No one needs getting their hair did, nor to go out to a fancy restaurant, just so we can see a spike with the virus. I feel bad for all the businesses that are forever fucked, but if you're not essential, just keep it shut.

People talking like "my wedding is in July. I'm sure things will be back to normal." LOL. This virus has been a giant slap to humanity to get it's shit together.

Re: Chinese New year corona special $4.

It's good to read everyone's perspective here, I think we all bring a different angle to this.

From a business owner perspective as well as interest in real estate I can already tell you things will not go back to "normal". We will have a new normal, life is not over as we know it, but there will be significant changes.

From a business perspective, there is no way around it, a lot of businesses especially small/mid sized are gone. Some are hanging on by a thread hoping between a stimulus and quick reopening they can survive (this is where majority operate). The rest already can't hack it or have closed shop. This will certainly trickle up to large corps with layoffs.

Commercial landlords especially those with many restaurant chains already have a large amount of confirmations that the businesses are closing shop. Government stimulus isn't enough, uncertainty of how long this goes on for isn't worth accruing more debt for. No bailout will dig you out of that.

Car repos are up in Canada, pretty sure this is still kept quiet, but if you think dealers (especially used cars) can afford to sit on inventory that's not moving for prolonged time, you are mistaken. Following China, in their first month of the lockdown car sales were down 20%, 2nd month they were down a further 80%. Between that, people with negative equity in their cars I think the used car market is going to take a massive shit. 911's for everyone \:\|

This comes down to rich vs. poor. If you are fortunate to have a job or a job that can be done remotely, you are good for now. Doesn't mean safe, but at least you have something as the lockdown continues. Those who don't have the privilege of such jobs have no choice but to expose themselves to the virus and continue to work if the work is there.

I agree everyone should stay home to help the greater good, but I too remember not having money and I can't say with confidence that if I was faced with feeding my family and catching the virus vs staying home and potentially losing my house/apartment/no food on the table that I'd pick the latter. I think most of us would take the risk and work even if we can catch the virus. I don't see how there is a choice.

We all know what the right thing to do is and those of us who can adhere to the lockdown should do so, but we are not in a position to pass judgement on others from the comfort of our homes when many are in much worse positions (save for the few assholes ruining it for everyone else).

It seems like such a logical thing but so many people are just too fucking dumb to understand.
Went into bulk barn last week. They make you put on hand sanitizer when you come in and then put on clean gloves that they supply. The lady behind me was so pissy that they were making her take off the gloves she walked into the store wearing and put on new ones. She just couldn't understand. "I'm already wearing gloves!", she argued with the workers. They had to spell it out for her.

haven't been to bulk barn in a couple of weeks - good to know of their protocol -- i know they've always been pretty good w/ their covered bins -- just wondering if they also impose people putting on masks to avoid people accidentally coughing into bins they open while scooping?

I was there about 2.5 weeks ago and what they did was you sanitize / put on gloves when you enter and then you wait for an employee. They basically shop for you - you tell them what you want and they scoop / bag it for you, then take everything up to the cashier.

100% Vas.
Especially when you consider that typically, most people survive and don't have anything more than a week of flu symptoms... I'd bet if I wasn't in the position I'm in, that I'd go to work regardless of the lockdown.
But this is all based on time.
A week or two... people stay in. The longer this drags on, the more we're gonna find what you described... people stepping out and doing it anyways because survival is the only thing left for them.

Not to be all Trump supporter but the prolonged Stay at home stance will do more harm than good. We live in a very fragile economy where small changes causes drastic events and we simply can't keep this going for much longer. Restaurants are holding on by a thread, as Vas said Corps will feel the affects soon enough and everyone will suffer for it.

My wife started a new job a month ago (process started before the lockdown) but as a result she had her laptop mailed to her and she as of yet has not seen a coworker face to face yet. Company has started laying off people.

We need to start up again, those who can continue WFH can do so but for others, have it mandatory to wear masks in public (malls, shops..whatever) and have other protocols in place to be safe but have it rolling up again.

Also what is this going to do for all the kids in schools from all age groups? Does school get cancelled for the year, have them forgo summer vacation and continue then, if cancelled then does the summer programs get cancelled too so parents are then stuck again?

I agree, of the lowest hanging fruit, if everyone wore masks we can definitely accelerate reopening part of the economy. I think that in itself is a very viable solution, the only problem is that effective masks are limited to the N95's.

Last I checked I think 3M N95 can produce about 35 million units per week at full capacity (someone should double check). So once you cover all hospitals/frontline/essential workers and there are enough masks to go around for everyone I think it's reasonable to make it mandatory in public to wear one so we have something quasi functioning opposed to nothing. It's not a perfect solution by any stretch, but I don't know what the alternative is.

Canada is 45 people per 1M.

Actually it would - I didn't think that their capital (Stockholm) would be more urbanly dense compared to Toronto.

The scale is relatively on par so yes if it works for them, maybe there's hope for us.

Was walking around my area today and noticed the 24/7 gym was closed, just like my gym down the street...but it looked odd. Walked up to the glass and there was the typical "closed due to covid 19" note, but everything had been ripped out, all equipment gone, reception gone, signs gone, just an empty space.

I know as a commercial landlord, you can take over a place in default of rent payment after 15 days and sell assets to recover rent in arrears. What I suspect happened here was these emptied the whole thing and stopped paying rent to basically hold the landlord hostage so that he can't make a legal claim for the money they would owe during covid as accrued debt, essentially forcing to forgive it or they most likely went bankrupt and tried to liquidate as much shit as possible before the banks come after them.

Just a tiny example of how we are about to see a lot of empty store fronts.

Sounds to me they fudging numbers to get the economy to open back up as quick as possible.

so if it opens back up...will people actually want to go back knowing they could get fucked in the end ?

Yes because the general public is legit stupid AF. Maybe it's my tin foil hat talking but I likely won't be going to many public places even after the lock down is lifted. I'm enjoying grocery delivery/curbside pick up. I'll likely never set foot in a grocery store again. Not because of covid but I like the convenience of it.

re: UV-C and furnaces ... Thought about making the air in the home 'cleaner' ... even pre-COVID, but never got around ... Just wondering who's done this, efficacy, etc...

(I have a little electric toothbrush head cleaner that uses UV light as well )

I argue with the wife that this whole UV-C thing is about DECREASING the amount of virus by killing it, by %. i.e. you'd have to let it bathe in UV-C for like 24 hours or something to really really kill 99.9% of viruses ... (or whatever time it takes.).

i.e. putting your phone into that UV-C thing for 10 mins ain't going to make it hospital-grade clean, or wiping it down with a Clorox wipe.

Boss told us today that the company may be letting a skeleton staff back in the office this summer. Things like one person per elevator means there really can't be too many people in there at once. They may open the doors a little wider in the fall, but it's quite possible most of us will be at home until next year.

Is your pay still at 100%?

Lots of people I talked to at bigger companies/former employers are taking paycuts. Some have been gradual like 10% in April, another 5% coming in May.

Some as drastic as 25% right out of the gate since this started.

for us i am a bit surpried how tight things are getting, for how 'well' things usually are for our Co.

-raises that were due in May now cut (no surprises, fair enough)
-xmas bonus due for july in question (prob will be cut, but maybe not as it's based on last years results so waiting on this)
-pay cuts across the board, 2% for me then it goes 3.5 and 5 up the ladder, ouch, but it's temporary...no end date in sight yet
-we're going into wk 3 of forced 1-day off work, unpaid, can't use vacay to get paid, again TBD
-they have begun packaging out senior staff already, 1-3 a week it seems
-POSSIBLE future cut measures to be taken tbd......

factory guys heading back May 11th so that's good for them. prob very slow production with the safety measure in place, not to mention a shitton of unsold cars both at dealers and at autoports/compounds across canada.

otherwise, can't complain. working from home is working out ok though. hard as fuck with 2 lil guys running amok but we're making it work.

been filling in/assistin with our CR dept's lately given the insane backlog too lol.

i guess its a balance of how much food can you put out and make money on vs how much supply you need to order so youre not wasting anything

We have 2 of our 4 locations open from 4-8 Tuesday to Saturday, and we're only doing about 5% of the revenue we would normally be doing. No location running profitably. Our phones were busy from 330-730.

I can't imagine these big boxes in plazas in the GTA can keep paying these rents for that long. Mom and pop shops should make it, they'll just suffer their own pay in the short run.

There is a subsidy but also some just won’t pay. Gap already said it is stopping paying rent as an example. As mentioned above CF said about 25% of their base have paid. It’s not always about can’t pay it’s also a about won’t pay since it is not open / delivering returns

Just think of a big company like Best Buy if they said nah we aren’t paying this month what would a property company do? It would be short sighted to take action and the good ones will work with companies. It’s not like they would kick Best Buy out and then have it empty and find another massive retailer in that location (there isn’t many) that could fit all of the clauses and afford it to replace the BB space.

Sucks about Henry's, but I am not sure if there is any brick and mortar business that won't follow suit, at least they are doing it early on and not wasting time trying to keep shit afloat when there is no point. If they were able to do this quick chances are these stores were already on the chopping block for some time now. I think it's a good opportunity for a lot of these retailers to cut out the low performing profit centers via restructuring and double down on their profitable locations and online. It allows many to get out of long term leases/severance liabilities at a reduced cost if they do it now under these conditions than trying to maintain status quo.

The employee of Longo's been wearing masks for a couple of weeks now since two of their stores were affected.
Funny though, you can tell some of them don't want to wear masks. This old man who were restocking was only wearing on his mouth having the nose completely exposed.

Feel safer shopping at Asian grocery stores now. Everyone there including employees wear masks.

I only have 2 of my 13 tenants that have been able to pay me for May including myself.

That location is our biggest and sprawls across 2 buildings. Our capacity is around 550 and we haven't had a single person in it since March 16th. It's a big restaurant that pivots to bar at night. We shut down for a renovation in January that we hadn't fully paid for, so this hit us at a really really bad time financially.

Luckily I pulled out a lot of weed money that I've been sitting on, so we'll have no problem making it through... but our burn rate between the 4 locations is about $15k/week right now.

Depends which grocery store you go to...

Nations in Hamilton ask you to wear a face covering at the entrance, and give you one if needed.

Next thing you know, you're walking around and every once in awhile you'll see white/black people with no mask (They walked in with a mask, then took it off.). No employees in the store monitor/nor say anything to them about it.

Good time to rethink restructure if possible, otherwise not much else to do but ride it out as best as you can and try to leverage as much of the government aid as possible. We also picked up a fridge + freezer and shoved it into the basement ... Need to start prepping/packing meats into smaller portions into freezer bags etc... FFS eggs, fucking eggs get the beatdown each time and we lose a few FML we go shopping.

been doing both without issue
amazon has some backlogged products but they usually ship[ much sooner than they advertise

we are using wholesale club for curbside, no longer than a week for pickup so we plan accordingly

theres also places like gordon food services, buy and pickup same day
theres also woodward meats
and sysco now offers buy and pickup

so many options besides the big name brands if you're having issues

zero issues, try stepping into a store or pay for amazon prime. I ordered 10 items on amazon on sunday and I will be receiving my order this afternoon.

Generally it's much better now than what it used to be a month ago and you shouldn't really have any issues ordering what you need. We ordered a bike for one of the kiddo last week at crappy tire and the curb side pick-up was painless. It was great and I love that I don't have to go inside the store.

Oh and.. 1,800 on take outs?

How is the produce using these online ordering things? I'm really picky when it comes to produce and it probably makes up 80% of my grocery bill. Pretty sure I don't want someone else picking my veggies and fruits for me.

Was gonna order some Mobil1 from Canadian Tire since it's 45% off.

Put it in cart.
Says "In store purchase Only"

I changed the location and it worked.
I guess some locations don't even offer Curbside pick ups.

So, with the lack of (serious) COVID infections for children / infants, apparently Sick Kids is pretty quiet, so much so the staff there (likely just the nurses) are concerned they'll be called up to help in crazier areas like LTC homes etc...

My understanding is RNs won't be called to help in LTC facilities because they're kind of the top dog. With less RNs at hospital, you're actively committing patient murder if anything were to happen.
However, RPNs are "disposable" and are being sent over to do swabs. The swab doesn't require the high skillset of an RN so I totally understand sending the RPN to do that. It just requires a brief education on swab and nasal cavity anatomy and some virology and they can do it. That would take about an hour or two.

It would be like sending an advanced care paramedic to transfer someone with low haemoglobin to the hospital... or an anaesthesiologist to prep drugs for a cardiac arrest.

And sick kids RNs are soooo specialized. So much so that they don't even function on the same wavelength for drugs.
"1mg of epi? um... I don't know anything beyond 0.3mg" lol. Everything they do is so scaled down for paediatrics its nuts. I admire them for what they do. They're amazing.

I'm back to work tomorrow. We'll see how that goes.

Re: Chinese New year corona special $4.

Last I heard about dentists in Ontario ...

They're not opening up anytime soon for standard procedures (emergency only.). RCDSO cannot enforce, they can only 'strongly recommend' things ... (i.e. dental clinics can open if they want.).

Based on some bullshit change.org my dental friends are supporting, supposedly RCDSO recommending:

- ALL standard procedures continue to use the same existing safety protocols, plus:
- closed-room capabilities, i.e. not partially-open rooms.
- there must be a 2-3 hour DELAY BETWEEN PATIENTS, for 'the virus particles to drop to the ground' or some shit

https://www.change.org/p/provincial-dent...-evidence-based

Other recommendations by RCDSO is kinda crazy:
https://www.rcdso.org/en-ca/rcdso-members/2019-novel-coronavirus/covid-19-faqs#a6
 Quote:
Have clinic staff manage commonly-used surfaces, i.e. open/close doors for patients

I'd be concerned how the dental hygienists will manage thru this re: PPE ... (all the hygienists have already been laid off since March at my buddys' clinics)

Longo's doing it right.
Masks handed out, temp checked, make you sanitize hands, cart sanitized as they hand one to you. Your location didn't do that?

Went to Canadian Tire to pick up previously ordered items. Went inside to see.
Only thing they do is have you push the cart for distancing even if you don't need it. Then one way isles.

so here's my take on it.

they are closing schools for the rest of the year, but re opening stores and shit. i've gone to grocery stores, shoppers etc and nobody was wearing masks, hundreds of people at niagara falls, downtown etc so a "second" wave of infections would already be happening....however numbers are still the same and same amount of volume at hospitals. with H1N1 there were no closures, basically a free for all and i think it's the same with this covid shit.

basically at this point, unless you're super old or have pre existing medical conditions, i don't think that covid NOW, is as bad as SARS or H1N1 was in it's full extent.

Re: Chinese New year corona special $4.

The second wave seems happening in Korea.

South Korea had 0 new domestic cases for 4 straight days a couple of weeks ago.
(we still have 1,000 each day)

New case developed at a club last week by 1 girl who ignored self quarantine order.
Now back to couple hundreds. 20-30 new cases each day since, ALL linked from that club and that girl.

One of the club attendee was a private learning center teacher who spread to his students, then to their parents.
One guy from the same club infected his uncle and 1yr old nephew

It's a Korean site. City of Gunpo's official site.
If you click on 33th person, they list all the places she visited until she was admitted to hospital on the 19th
http://www.gunpo.go.kr/intro.jsp

They also closed high school as soon as it opened.
2 students who were linked to that club tested positive.
Above teacher's student went to a karaoke place. 2 OTHER students went to the same karaoke place and got infected.

I am comfortable with sleeping in, doing my work and getting off and saving 3 hours of commute. I told them I would not feel comfortable until there is a vaccine because I am more "comfortable" at home. \:D

Just watched a news clip uploaded today
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=arSrgtc63hQ

9 people tested positive from a birthday party for a 1 year old.
The photographer was the carrier, who was infected from the teacher who went to the club above.

One of those 9 people is a construction worker.
They just shut down the construction site which employee 200+ workers.

The teacher is responsible for 40 people so far.

One business I was at where social distancing was not possible, no one adhered to any of the mandated policy, not the line ups, not the coverings, people talking together in VERY confined spaces, no masks, no gloves, people from outside walking in and out.

It was uncomfortable to watch, maybe we all have herd immunity by now? I don't know, but it's not looking good.

Also wearing a mask in the heat yesterday was shiiiiity.

Walmart has been hiding cases as well. I’ll just leave it at that... No cases in Markham that I know of, but lets just say some stores in Toronto had hourly workers tested positive and this didn’t make the news.

Re: Chinese New year corona special $4.

It's after the fact now, but Toronto Public Health is stupid.
I was sent off for 14 days self isolation because I intubated a patient without a respirator on.
They initially presented completely differently so we were wearing surgical masks, but they declined very quickly (within 7 minutes) from normal to flatline so we were caught a little off guard.
The decline started as we arrived at the elevator banks to go down to the ambo, to just after we loaded them into the ambo...

When their heart stopped, it happened in the ambo and we intubated her, forgetting to switch masks.
We got the patient back so that's the good part. But because it was considered an "unprotected exposure" we were sent off.

We were told that public health would notify us if the patient swabbed positive at the hospital... but not if they swabbed negative.
Through sources at the hospital, the patient swabbed negative... and of course my partner and I were asymptomatic... but yet, public health insists on only telling you if the person is positive, and that if you don't get a call you still have to self iso because "it could take a while for them to receive the results."
That means you have to stay off the entire 14 days no matter what.
I even asked "what if we get swabbed and are negative?"
Still no.

So basically, rather than having a full crew back at work... they would rather pay us to be off for 14 days.
You might say "hey, 14 day paid vacation!"
But it's not. It's isolation... under the umbrella that you don't ACTUALLY know if you're negative. You could be told 10 days into the iso that the person actually tested positive... so for the 2 days until someone told me (which is unofficial) I slept downstairs and didn't hang out with my kids.

Once I found out they were negative, I went back to normal life.
However, if public health or Durham Health paid a visit and found that I was out of the house or whatever, I would be nailed hard for breaching my isolation directives.

I hate Toronto Public Health.

No wonder everyone is so fucking scared.

Re: Chinese New year corona special $4.

Glad to hear you are negative.

The Cases have been steadily decreasing. I guess we've been doing ok. Need to keep washing hands.

I suspect I won't be in at work until 2020. If they aren't forcing me, I am not going.

Re: Chinese New year corona special $4.

Peel regions made the mask mandatory indoors.
Toronto waiting for approval.

So I went Costco to buy some filtered masks and it was sold out.
Went to another location and they had some left.

Costco.ca had some early today, and all gone now.

Those in the suburbs can likely pick up some of those medical masks at Canada Computers (50/$25.99)

https://www.canadacomputers.com/search/results_details.php?language=en&keywords=mask

T&T has them too:

I've been down that way a number of times when visiting Aphria's greenhouses. The whole area is Mexicans in yellows vests on kijiji used women's bikes riding in the shoulder of country roads. They also all live together in company bought houses (at least that's how Aphria does it) and for sure if 1 worker has it, it's spreads like wildfire when you have 10-15 dudes rooming in 1,500 sq. ft. bungalows in bunk beds.

The Big Story podcast this morning covers the US mask issue nicely.

There would have been a lot less resistance if the message from the top was to wear a mask from the get-go.

We had a huge problem at the start with news and government telling everyone not to wear masks. Fucking retarded. That being said i don't trust them. Y'all can move to stage 3. I'll stay in stage 1 at most.

Most people were young...like us back in the day.
So, it's kinda new to them I guess.

But way too many people in the lot like Corona is thing of the past, and 50-60 people lined up to get ice cream.

While I think it's irresponsible to have the woodbridge meets right now, I have to say it makes me happy seeing young kids still do car meets. It's not even remotely close to the shitshow we grew up in along highway 7 \:D but I am glad the scene/whatever is left of it is alive and well. Many good times were had, this forum's entire existence over the last 20+ years is precisely because of the picture above.

What's crazy is when you drive past some of the locations it used to happen at and it's completely different.
The biggest one for me is Milley's Donuts. There was just a field on the south side of Steeles back then. Now it's a bustling centre of Asian-ness.

Millies Donuts was pretty fun. Cruising along to the 404 and back up on Kennedy and then eventually ending up at Midland and Ellesmere.

Can't picture myself doing that now with all the street "racing" laws.
