Google Home Mini?

Anyone have / use one?

All the peasants in Development Dept got one ... Not sure how much or even really what I'll be using this for

I have Nest, ChromeCast/ChromeCast Ultra, bunch of iPhones, (don't think it can control my LG smart tv though), Nest Thermostat ...

I rarely use Siri as it is ... I remember a friend used her Alexa to start a Spotify top 50 playlist or something ... else... dunno what I'd do with it.

Maybe I can win arguments with the wife with quick fact lookups

Re: Google Home Mini?

If you don't have much use for it and you're not big on Google recording all your conversations at home, I say sell it. Or set it up and test it out. You might find yourself using it more than you thought.

Re: Google Home Mini?

I could use one upstairs so I can tell Google to turn all the fucking lights off when I'm in bed

Re: Google Home Mini?

Give it a try, I always thought the Ecobee/Nest thermostats were pointless until I actually started using it. (and got it free \:D )

You may find Google Home handy after using it for a bit. At first glance for me though, I would sell it.

Re: Google Home Mini?

I'm gonna see if it can translate shit from English to Mandarin, and Cantonese <--> Mandarin

FurBall: "Ok Google, priority one"
Google: "Ok, encrypting all porn"

FurBall: "Ok Google, red alert"
Google: "Ok, loading porn due to the red tide"

FurBall: "Ok Google, Astroglide"
Google: "Ok, turning on the lawn sprinklers"

FurBall: "Ok Google, flirt with disaster"
Google: "Ok, turning on all lights in the house"

FurBall: <after having argument with wife> "Ok Google, translate crazy"
Google: "Ok, reserving AirBnB room for 1 week and booking one-way ticket"

Re: Google Home Mini?

It sucks you can't link it to Amazon Prime for re-ordering of everyday shit, although not really surprised.

I have a couple of smart bulbs and switches so I use it to turn the lights on and off. It was just for shits and giggles at first but now it's pretty convenient. I only have one in my bedroom. Sometimes I'll ask it the time if I don't have my glasses and can't see the clock. Or I'll ask it the weather and my reminders too. It's all a gimmick but for free it's worth it.

Re: Google Home Mini?

Still trying to figure out how to actually use it with the gadgets I have around the house...

i.e. I was thinking I'd be able to do some automation, but I'm not sure whether I have to 'program' it like how IFTTT-style, or if it's supposed to automagically figure that out.

Like, for the Nest Thermostat, I know I can ask what temp it is now, to make it cooler, etc.

But say, for a doorbell, does it automagically say "Hey, Risky is at the door stalking you", or do you need to 'program' that?

Or say, a security cam (not sure which are supported), it'll say "Hey, Risky is snooping in your backyard, turning on the siren WEE WOO WEE WOO"

Re: Google Home Mini?

It's just a front end for any automation. I can say 'Hey Google, open garage door #2' and it opens garage door #2. Or it turns on specific lights, or changes the temp on the Nest or turns the fan on, or plays my Spotify playlist, whatever.

For the doorbell you could ask 'Hey Google, is the front door locked?' If it's compatible with whatever system you're using (For example SmartThings) it will sort all that out itself during install. No need to program it specifically.

Re: Google Home Mini?

I use my amazon echo daily, so if setup to control many things I find it very valuable

from waking up and saying "alexa, turn on breakfast" to going to bed "alexa turn off house" and knowing everything is good, is really handy
