TV Options..... Peasant version

So my TV is starting to go snowy. It's a few years old so I figure now is a good time to replace.
Honestly, I'm not really interested in all this 4k, hdr, curved etc.
I'd prefer something that's built well and looks good. 1080p is fine for me as I'm not interested in changing all my gear to go to 4k. I have a pioneer elite amp that does all the switching so going to 4k means changing that too, plus my Rogers box, plus new BD player = fuck that.

Do smart tvs play x265 these days? Mine is a plasma and isn't a smart TV. I'm using a wdtv box (old I know) to play my downloaded movies atm. It's been great as it plays everything and even plays TrueHD and DTS-HD beautifully but no x265.

My ideal replacement would be 60-65",smart, 1080p, play x265, and less than $2k out the door.

Willing to spend up to $2k? Bra pick up the LG B7 55" OLED its on sale right now for $2k. You have a plasma and will hate fucking LCDs trust me.

And if you want a smart tv LG has the best right now.

Re: TV Options..... Peasant version

dude yeah, for the money and future proofing (re. OP's 1080p comment) you go min. LED 4K (ideally HDR if not, no biggie) even those sizes they're still affordable esp with black friday and boxing day coming up!

but for the true future proof and money go OLED if you can (samsungs QLED is ok but not true OLED like LG and SONY use). i can't believe an OLED is already down to $2000, which is awesome!

hator is right, 4k LED's are nice but fuck me the blacks don't touch my old plasma or new oled's. and the light bleed effect you get around the edges is fucking shit.

I don't even want to talk about how much I paid for my first 65" OLED 1.5 years ago.

Great recommendation, did not fit his sizing or pricing criteria.

Re: TV Options..... Peasant version

Ya but 4k is like not happening any time soon. I'm not changing my amplifier as I like it as is. I'm not huge into this TV tech shit. I get the future proofing idea but this is more of a short term purchase. The TV I replacing I got from Wayne a 3 or 4 years ago and LOTS has changed in that time. I'm looking at the same time horizon again.

Back to the x265 playback tho. If I buy new anyone know if smart tvs can play it natively?

You're totally missing the point. You said you can spend $2k. I'm saying for that kind of money don't buy a shitty lcd when it costs almost the same. Just because it's 4k doesn't mean you need to have 4k content. The tv will upscale automatically and does a good job at it.

Not sure why you think you need to change any of your current equipment. You don't need to. And yes the LG will play x265.

I'd say a smart phone is worth the 1k+ premium considering its capabilities, not sure about a TV.

Re: TV Options..... Peasant version

trust us meng not to mention, this is CSI BALLER FORUM \:D

get a 4k hdr (or non hdr) for the money, you'll use it eventually. 4k receivers are cheap...just upgrade sometime in a year or so and get a hi-speed 4k HDMI capable cable and you're good to go.

OLED is not a MUST but they do run cooler/consume less energy i believe than LED tv's even (and LED's are already very low). don't even touch lcd/plasma anymore.

Any of these new smart 4k TVs be able to output HD audio to my receiver? If so then I'm sold.

haha for real, but it seems with new tech coming every 5yrs or so and plasmas dying out (and even some LCD blowing quickly) it's almost the norm to swap a tv out around that time period, or slightly more.

i think as LED's fill more ppl's homes they last longer (right?), same with OLED, we'll see ppl keeping them longer. just my opinion.

i knwo for me my sammy plasma shit the bed last year so that's why i got the sony 900 series end of year good diu (plus i just re-did the basement and wanted something better on the wall). basement is full 7.1 4khdr setup. for upstairs our bedroom tv was old and the grand parents wanted just an extra lcd so we gave it to them. so i moved fam room older panny lcd (love this thing, still going strong) to bedroom and bought a new sony 800E LED for there. gonna upgrade the receiver one day to 4k ready.

btw anyone who wants my sony x900c 55" superthin 4kHDR led for cheap let me know, i'm ready for OLED upgrade down there anytime ;\) \:D

Re: TV Options..... Peasant version

I'm still using a 42" Panny plasma in the bedroom and a 46" Sony LCD in the family room. The plasma is from 2006, and the LCD is from 2007. I have no plans to replace either until they die. I'm not a home theatre snob though and probably can't tell the difference between most of the tech.

I ask myself the same question to why people buy cars so often. I wonder if they are filling up their driveway w/ cars or something? or every parking lot needs a car?

still rocking a 42" panasonic from 2009 in my living room
I have a 2011 50" panasonic in my basement

I was looking into getting a new TV but the size vs cost wasn't quite there for me (I'm cheap)

ended up getting a projector and 120" screen for the basement. I enjoy that much better.

we only have 1 tv in our house - been using it for 11 years now (42" LG) -

not investing in any new electronics until the boy gets older - in case he smashes this one up doing something stupid.

Have my old samsung 50" plasma in my office, it developed lines through it and only use it to chromecast youtube vids while on the treadmill.

Have a 60" plasma in the basement rec room, this replaced the 50" but doesn't get much use.

Have a 50" LCD in the den, this is the main tv

Have a tiny, not even 32" in the bedroom that is pretty much for morning/late news only.

RE: Oled - are there not burn in issues, and also issues of longevity?
The whole tech is based on organic compounds. oled brightness decays over time.

I wonder if lcd actually lasts longer...

Re: TV Options..... Peasant version

I was rocking a 27" Sony Trinitron CRT circa 2000 (as a secondary tv) up until last year Bought it with my first full-time pay

S/O was spending more time upstairs as she likes to blast her notebook/tv while I'm studying/working at the kitchen table...

So we moved the (3 yr old) LG 55" 3D LCD SmartTV to bedroom, and got a new 65" 4k LED SmartTV. I don't imagine another one, or an upgrade, for the next 10 years, unless these break.

I didn't find anything. There were a couple of 65" deals but when it came time to pull the trigger I realized I didn't want to spend $1500.

Now I'm hitting kijiji for a decent 60-65" 1080p used. Hopefully can get something sub $1k

So I picked up a Vizio M-Series 65" from Costco yesterday. Testing it out right now, so far its great and much better than my old plasma. Its really nice, and my htpc experience has improved immensely as well. Cheaper yesterday than even on b-friday. Just set it up this morning
