I bought wheels from the states (used) and had to pay HST only.

Yup. Worst case scenario is ~20% on top of the 33% exchange rate.

$1200 US wheels could end up costing close to $2K CAD by the time you've got them home.

what lnxguy said. or just say you bought it used/cheap at a swap meet (for those they sometimes don't even ask for receipt). smaller parts i never bothered declaring and went on through.

^ if you don't have a receipt (fake or not) or proof of payment, depending on the person you get they will make you call the seller and they will get their side of the story and you better make sure their phone number has an American area code or you will be going to home depot for screws just in case for a long time.

Or wait till they waved you through to the inspection area and they demands for receipts or show emails exchange between you and seller.

Last thing you want is getting flagged for avoiding to pay taxes on an used part. Your future travel and crossing boarder will be a pain in the ass.

Just don't chance it.
Drive down with shitty steeles, throw them out, put on the new rims, curb rub a few times and you're good.

I brought over a kicker motor for the boat a few years ago. Made up a fake receipt, border guy didn't even flinch, I went inside and paid something like $60 on a $3500Us outboard

There is no way they will charge you duty, at worst you will pay 13%.

Be careful with a fake receipt. My buddy bought wheels in Michigan, wrote a fake receipt, got pulled in at customs coming back into canada and they went through his phone and found email/text conversation discussing price. He got fucked pretty good.

I don't know what customs might say when they see an American guy bringing a set of rims to Canada to sell.

If you're going to try to fuck over customs, be smart about it. You can't go in there with something that shows a dollar amount for 90% of most likely what the product is worth.

'Hey man, I swear I only paid $100 for these $3000 rims.. I got a great deal!!!!!'

You just said you declared an outboard motor worth 3,500USD for $350USD

How is that smart? You got lucky, that's all there is to it.

Do all of you think the CBSA are fucking idiots, they don't know how to google the price value of an item you are bringing in? I don't even.

That is called luck. It doesn't mean every Canada Border Officers will treat everyone the same.

Re: Buying used car parts in the states

Another friend of mine bought a del sol online, guy originally had it listed on ebay and the buyer backed out so my buddy picked it up for less than what the original buyer bought it for on ebay. When he came across with the car they pulled him in and found the sold listing on ebay. They held him because they didn't believe his story about not being the ebay buyer. He had to prove he wasn't lying.
My cousin has worked both crossings here in Windsor for over 20 years. He says everybody on staff is known for their hobbies whether it computers, bikes, camera, audio equipment, etc. And they will call each other over if they think somebody is lying.
Never leave a paper trail or electronic trail that they can trace. Always be friendly and polite, always make sure your back windows are rolled down so they can see in the vehicle, turn on dome lights if it is night time. All common sense stuff but it goes a long way.

Yeah, hand written receipts or receipts typed up in notepad are the biggest red flag, the border agents aren't that naive.

Re: Buying used car parts in the states

I used to make my own craigslist posts on buffalo CL back in the day when people were just starting to use po boxes. Also made my own eBay listings with my wife's account if the sellers weren't willing to work with me on having documented lower value. I got lucky and never had issues, but I know people who weren't and fuck getting flagged for the next decade.

Re: Buying used car parts in the states

Lol at making your own adds, fucking boss.

I'm fucking flagged for fruit. Some black bitch in the US, first question she asked me was if I had any alcohol or tobacco, I replied no. See saw my lunch cooler and opened it and found an apple.

her - "WHATZ DIS??????"
me - an apple
her - "I AXED YOUZ IF YOU HAD ANY FOOD AND YOU SAID YOU JUST HAD WATER"

no way was I going to call her a liar and make the situation even worse, so I just apologized and said I misunderstood so she put me in the computer as an apple smuggler. I don't get pulled in or anything for it but I get asked every single time now if I have food.

Re: Buying used car parts in the states

sneaking shit is not worth the fuckn hassle and being flagged forever.

for me, im always up front about it: put the items right on the passenger seat, receipt or invoice in hand (for new stuff), all windows down, honest about the price, say i've been in the US for only 20 mins aka obviously went in to pick something up, etc.

and even with all that, i would say that about 1 out of 3 times the officer will let me through without being pulled in. be up front with them, they'll be up front with you.

worst case i would pay 13% on the $CAD value of the items. something i still would have had to pay if I bought the item in Canada...

Re: Buying used car parts in the states

My buddy who works for CBSA tells me they can/will go through everything. If you get caught lying, its over for you.

I don't think duties/taxes are worth me getting flagged at the Canadian border, maybe if i have to pay 5k or something, but F that. I've noticed being honest was my best bet, been let through most of the times. THe CDN gov't just wants a piece of the pi.

Yeah, I'm thinking I'll just be prepared to pay the 20%...
How do I get a "legit" receipt for something second hand? I figured hand written/both signed would have to be good enough?

Fuck, maybe this isn't worth the hassle.. \:\(

wat?

Just buy the wheels, bring the ad and pay hst on the value, wtf is complicated?

As long as there is a legitimate person on the other side of the border and you are declaring the value you paid, you got nothing to worry about.

It would be different if you were buying brand new things and then making fake ads/receipts as if you bought the items used declaring a much lower value and paying pennies on the dollar for HST \:\|

this!

Don't put down $100 on a hand written receipt as the officers won't believe you unless they are Honda 14" wheels from 1989 Civic or something

This wasn't hand written, it was an printed receipt with the details + signatures of myself and the seller. I also carried along a fake email convo we had about it (It apparently was damaged)

Hook, line and sinker
