what lnxguy said. or just say you bought it used/cheap at a swap meet (for those they sometimes don't even ask for receipt). smaller parts i never bothered declaring and went on through.

^ if you don't have a receipt (fake or not) or proof of payment, depending on the person you get they will make you call the seller and they will get their side of the story and you better make sure their phone number has an American area code or you will be going to home depot for screws just in case for a long time.

Be careful with a fake receipt. My buddy bought wheels in Michigan, wrote a fake receipt, got pulled in at customs coming back into canada and they went through his phone and found email/text conversation discussing price. He got fucked pretty good.

If you're going to try to fuck over customs, be smart about it. You can't go in there with something that shows a dollar amount for 90% of most likely what the product is worth.

I used to make my own craigslist posts on buffalo CL back in the day when people were just starting to use po boxes. Also made my own eBay listings with my wife's account if the sellers weren't willing to work with me on having documented lower value. As long as there is a legitimate person on the other side of the border and you are declaring the value you paid, you got nothing to worry about.

It would be different if you were buying brand new things and then making fake ads/receipts as if you bought the items used declaring a much lower value and paying pennies on the dollar for HST

Yeah, hand written receipts or receipts typed up in notepad are the biggest red flag, the border agents aren't that naive.
