I don't mean to sound negative, but is there any possibility that he wasn't on duty? Is there a chance they just said he was part of the surveillance team (which I'm sure existed but that he was not involved with at the time he hit her)? Or have I just been reading too many CSi posts and watching too much Dateline/60 minutes/20-20?

hmm.. tough call if it were actually for an emergency then I can see it but in this case cause they even said it wasn't an emergency that required him to drive that fast. But I guess they are using the 50/50 thing where there's some responsibility on the pedestrian to look before crossing.

It bullshit. He should be put away for murder.

No one expects someone to be going twice the speed limit for one & even if they saw them you're not expecting them to be ontop of you within a blink. Certainly not in a van.

For Murder? really.. so you have proof that he intended to kill this person? Manslaughter, probably..

then the question is, what if the cop was going the speed limit and still killed the guy?

Why bring up "what ifs" I'm commenting on what actually happened. Yes murder may be too harsh. Manslaughter without question. 2nd degree could be argue'd.

Re: Cop speeding 115km/hr in 60 zone kills kid

Well, given the fact that its been through the trial system twice, obviously there is not enough evidence for either of those charges.

There is room for what ifs, unless you have access to the entire body of evidence in this trial which I don't have. So I have to ask the what ifs..

Like, yea, if it were up to me, this cop would lose his license, and never be a cop again at the very least. Plus a couple years in jail for vehicular negligence causing death.

But then, if I had the power, a lot of things would be different.

lots of moralities to be had but at the end of the day he was tried by a jury of his community....twice and acquitted. don't like the law, then move. it's not like the judge saw the verdict of guilty and HE decided nope, he's innocent.

What really bugs me sometimes are the people who jaywalk less than 20ft from an intersection..

or whats funny is when I see joggers jay walk..

115 in a 60 ... that's 55 over. if it wasn't a cop, that's considered street racing.

I guess being a cop = license to kill.

Feel bad for the victim's family to go through this entire ordeal. They will never find closure to this.

Re: Cop speeding 115km/hr in 60 zone kills kid

Dangerous driving causing death is what the charge would be. Its a criminal charge, not the BS safe street acts provincial offences act. If that isn't a marked departure from normal and reasonable, I don't know what is.

Of course, being a cop he got off. I guess we have to look out for, and expect cops driving double the limit in residential neighbourhoods in unmarked vehicles, they have carte blanche. One law for them, and another for the rest of us.

Re: Cop speeding 115km/hr in 60 zone kills kid

I don't know...he didn't take out a kid at an intersection where they are expected to cross. Kid was j walking - there is a law against this for a reason.
Sure, the cop made a fatal error in judgement..........but he was legitimately on the job doing an investigation FOR PUBLIC SAFETY MIND YOU. Kid j walks and dies. Who is the more negligent one here?

Cop didn't see kid. Cop was speeding & driving 100+ on the job.
Kid crossed road where it shouldn't have been crossed. Kid did not look out for traffic sufficiently and got the short end of the stick on that one.

I don't see a problem. What happened sucks, but why should mr cop be put away for murder?

Re: Cop speeding 115km/hr in 60 zone kills kid

seriously, some of you really don't get why the laws are written in a certain way, and how this case is presented/defended in this manner. Either that or you all know some extra facts that aren't in the article.

But hey, I've said it time and time again, the entire system is fd. But our way of life has been built around this entire system, 99% of the time it works as intended and works well.

Re: Cop speeding 115km/hr in 60 zone kills kid

its not about who's lives matter over who, its our legal system working as designed and intended.

Should there be a limit to how fast police can drive over the limit? What if by creating this limit, you then risk other deaths because of the lack of response time?
