Put the summer toys away and prepped the winter beater. AWD Goodness!!! Snow tyres ordered and on the way. Swapped the tyres out and put the storage tyres on the Rustang. 315's in the rear. Holy hell, these things didn't look this wide. Side by side. Stock vs Summers. 245 vs. 315 Flushed fluids and cleaned up the engine bay a bit. A few shots before I put it away. And how it sits now. GNSP See you next summer. |

I daily drive a beater |

Is that a matrix? I drove one of those to Miami - versitile cars. Mustang looks good - I think I see silver mesh in the grill - I would black that out. |

Coils have been raised and the snow tires put on.. I gotta replace the rear axle bushings now, they are clunking like mad! |

anyone need a beater? i wanna sell my wifes 2007 SX4 sport JLX 4wd (with low range!), 5spd manual, all power options, i think it has about 75,000km on it. She has owned it from new all maintance up to date, new front brakes, it has been battered around, has dents, scratches, broken antenna and has had the rear bumper replaced. it has had zero issues, like nothing at all go wrong. Super reliable. Comes with new general altimaxx winters on spare rims, and new Continetals on stock wheels. i was thinking like 5-6k |

damn, that sounds like a sweet winter car!!! What is she replacing it with? |

she is not on board yet lol, but i want to get the M37 or maybe an LS460 without selling my jeep |

Winter beater not found. Snow tires and common sense prevail. Deep snow can be trouble though. |

No need for a winter beater. My car transforms for winter i.e. 3" raise + snow tires. Bad ass, huh? |

Mine was a beater right off the show room floor. Still got the all season's on, will change to winters when I see snow. |

its getting down there in temp. With all the damn rain we have had(which sucks ballz) its definitely in a zone that real performance summers dont like. |

I still have to buy winters and get the car krowned. I'll take the front lip off in a month. Edit - crap I need an alignment too because I've been screwing with the suspension so much lately as well. |

^frig me too. still need to rust proof, winter tires (recommendations?) and a nose mask. if i put clear vynal on the headlights, will that make the HID's glare like a mofo? |

No it's fine. There are lots of places that do it - my car has its headlights done. |

I always like Hankooks. Good in snow but better yet good in dry and doesn't feel "squishy" (that you'll be driving in most of the time) |

Blizzaks suck ? |

there's 70 bucks MIR for the blizzaks. 550 all in from tires23 for WS80 185/65/15. so after the MIR, it'd cost me .. ah fuck it too high to math. I had 3 sets of hankook, so gonna try the blizzaks this time. |

atleast on the RSX they did. well to be specific they sucked on acceleration, stopping, turning on snow was good. going or stopping on cold dry sucked, squishy as fuck. jeff i forgot aboot the hankooks. will price them out, alot of ppl seem happy with them. |

Originally Posted By: hyper-s2k ^ snow tires so soon? i probably won't get mine on for another 2-3 weeks. ya a few reasons why I swapped already...even tho my summer tires are all seasons anyway. Main reason I didn't want to be doing it in zero degree weather (or close to it), second is the temp is mostly single digits when I'm on the road (early morn, late afternoon/eve) so its snow tire weather anyway. Third I got a big ass nail in one of my summer tires. It wasn't leaking yet but didn't want to risk having the temp drop and it become a problem and/or find myself with a flat. This way at least i'm all set and done.....earliest Saturday Krown appt thats close by my house is nov 22 so after that point i'll be full winter mode. |

Yup, you'll be changing them after 3 season, but for ice traction, especially those glazed over intersections, nothing stops or turns better. Studded Nokians = heaven. I'm tempted to run them in the city |

Even studless, Nokians are crazy when it comes to grip and tread life, I really don't know how they do it to be honest. |

WS80's will be kickass man, you'll like them. Jeffo holy cow - how much? lol ballin'. on my STI i think i had a similar size but in 18" can't wait to try these 'all weather' optimo 4S on the R, see if they're bullshit or actually workout ok in the snow. |

The best winters I've personally used and driven on were Toyo winters, but expensive. Then the blizzaks, which I'm still on and then the Hankook's. Didn't like the Michelin Alpine's at all & the Dunlops (Graspic & 3D's) were okay. Still have to try some Nokian's, those are next on my list |

Did you have new studless ice and snow blizzaks with the dual tread compound? I had the LM80 performance ones and they were shit on the ice. The WS70s were great on the ice, but only before wearing throug the first 50% |

i called tires 23 for a set of 235/75/17 blizzaks and they wanted $90 more than simplytires EDIT no they are not , they add tax and the enviro fee, tires23 still cheaper!! |

Winter wheels in full effect. I put some spacers on the rear so the stock wheels won't look so sunken in. Stock tires are 235s but the winters will be 245s Front lip will come off in a few weeks and I'll Krown it. Looks so different with the darker smaller wheels on it. |

Why are you going to crown it when you will probably sell the car well within the corrosion warranty? I know bimmer has an 11 year corrosion perforation warranty, I'm guessing Lexus is the same? |
Perforation warranty is ridiculous - you know how rusty a car has the be to rust a hole in it? Those are Mazda problems man. I want the underside and all of the bolts and nuts to be protected. Makes it way easier to work on. Also I plan on keeping this one for awhile and add a sports car in the future or pass along to gf unit as her daily. It's also only 100 bucks. |
why not 225's for winter? |
stretched tires rougher ride adding extra kms for no reason lower to ground More benefits to going wider (since 235 is a weird size) Edit - it will also look stupid being so small in the wheel wells (radius). The benefits to being a few mm narrow is minimal in the type of snow we drive in especially since I have awd |
car looks much ebtter with the birghter wheels, but who cares, it's winter haha. I swapped winter this weekend as well, on my wifes car one lug nut was cross threaded, DOH, it only came half way loose then stopped. Couldnt do anything to get it off. Had to bust of the sawzall and get in there to cut the lug nut Stupid Suzuki, you cant change a lug nut without pressing out the hub!! Decided it was finally time to buy a press, got a hydrlic 12 ton, pressed out the hub, bearing toasted $189 locally for the bearing or $50 from Rockauto!! What the hell, now the car sits waiting for the fedex man |
took the MF-10's off today, 15" OE's on with new hankook 4S |
i bent up the 12 ton pretty good doing various bearings. shouldve got 20 as for the tire size...I could see 235 being off. what size stock wheels? can they fit 225 better? who cares about looks THAT much in winter? :p 225 > 245 in the snow. but either way youll be fine. |
you are doing it wrong then, according to the guage it only needed like 5 tons to pop out the hub! |
It will vary from car to car and what bearing you are working on of course. /age matters too. the older the harder it usually is. |

Michelin Xi3's sidewalls so squishy wtf... makes the car feel so twitchy Maybe some more PSI will help... I usually run my tires at 32 PSI. |

Putting a narrower tire on a wider rim will make it less squirmy. Plus, it's not the issue of forward traction in the snow (awd arguement). It's about steering and braking. Having a narrower tire in snow makes the car more responsive. A wider tire tends to ride atop the snow more vs slice through it. Rally cars are all about braking and cornering. They run bicycle tires Furball - I'd run higher pressure if it was dry. In low traction conditions, lower psi is preferred. But if you're dealing with squirm...uh yeah, 32 is low. I run 36psi in the summer time. |

You can always air down if the conditions call for it, airing up isn't as easy when you're in sloppy conditions I run my winters at 35psi, if it's bad out I'll air them down to 30psi or so. |

Further to that you're losing comfort and adding unnecessary kms on your car (even if it's minimal) - for what? That big rally I would be driving from my house to work on the 6 days I'll actually be driving on uncleared roads? With wheel sizes you never go smaller than stock circumference on a daily with low profile tires if you have to choose - it rides worse. I'm on 19's none of these 14 or 15 inch doughnuts deals. You know how small the sidewall is as it sits? I get the principles of a narrower tire in snow but it won't make a measurable amount of difference here vs the benefits of a taller sidewall. |

You guys are hilarious - it's a 10mm difference from stock and the bigger size that everyone with a GS runs is 10mm wider than stock. Do you even rally broooooo???? This is pretty much inline with 4age's car reviews, always review car performance/handling/everything under most extreme conditions which account for .0000000000000000000001% of driving and then use that as a blanket statement to make a point. A good review should be that AND REAL LIFE APPLICATION/livability!!! XD XD XD BRB rally. |

Jeff, we sold our legacy GT after 7 years with no rust. No rust on my E46 M3 either (that hardly got driven in the winter, if ever). Point is by the time you sell the car, it won't have rust on it and Krown will be a waste of money. If you plan on holding onto the car for 10+ years, I can see you doing crown. |

I agree with the principles and I also agree to go with the narrowest tire you can (but within the oem height specs). But I'm with you real world application - if I had non oem wheels sure buy a narrower wheel and get a tire that fits the height specs. Also we drive in mostly non snowy cold conditions for about 5 months of the year - screw making the car look terrible for so long ;). It's like saying I could get better acceleration with super low profile tires and 17s (if they fit the brakes) - sure but everything else would suck. I'm also not raising my car up - you basically have to take the suspension apart to do that and get another alignment - no way Jose. |
why do you keep saying more km's? what are the sizes ? cant you get the stock size in the winter you got? |
yep i agree.. narrower is good but only to a point. it's not a massive difference that you will feel in city driving 4age: these are andros from tire rack.. audi replica wheels 17x7.5 my stock tire size is 255/35/19 winters are 215/50/17, bit narrower and also half an inch shorter in terms of nominal height |
255 to 215. Petter Solberg over hurrr |
275/40 - 20 front and 315/35 - 20 rear to 245/55 - 19 all around for me. |
Yes I know wheel sizes, offsets and tire sizes extremely well - I've probably had more wheels, tires and done research than most if not all people here. Going 225 from 235 all else the same will be a 1 inch difference in circumference approx as well a 1.2% differenc (smaller meaning I will put on an extra 1% in kms). Going to a 45 series tire at 225 makes it 2.2% larger which is too big from stock. Going to a 245 40 from the stock 235 is only 1.2% larger. So I have to choose larger or smaller for the minimal difference - I choose 1 percent larger. |

I think there is a miscommunication here somewhere. I don't see how going to a narrow tire affects circumference at all. Tire diameter has to do with width plus aspect ratio of the tire. You can maintain circumference whilst going to a narrower tire if that is your concern. BTW a taller sidewall is going to also provide more grip in low traction conditions. EDIT: Just read your response on diameters. Ok, so you went with the one that would have the smallest effect. I get it, I get it XD |

Comfort benefit with availability - while the other tires may come in that size its always a wait because nobody uses them for anything. Also this matches exactly with my summer wheel size. 24 inches is for next summer man |

spd-dmn, images below of back of wheel. these are 18x8 alzor style 349. JWL certified for 815kg. I was surprised it got such a rating given that it's such an inexpensive wheel. Then I weighed it and I found out why...they are 30lbs XD XD XD they also make oem reps. might be the same manufacturer. shrug |

S is hibernating as of last week. Wifey's SUV is getting her winters on now since I just washed her summer wheels, might as well get them off and bagged when they are clean and dry. (plus I have spare cycles now to get it done). My daily beater. Probably won't do it for another couple of weeks. Gotta re-bleed the brakes (sensors / service reminder is complaining) and have the front pads inspected. Might as well do them at the same time. |

I was on my way to tire23 and there was an arsehole driving a red e36 m3 tailgating me on 403/eastgate parkway off ramp. i give him a derp brake check and purposely slowed down. LOL I've had people taking vids of my M3 while driving...guess they didn't like being passed on a 2 lane road (legal pass with no on-coming car in sight). Sure I was probably doing 140...can't help it if 3rd gear gets up there that fast lol. So i have received a useless warning letter from york regional pigs...i mean cops...i mean police about it. the "best" tires and big reviews all vary. If the tire is half decent(which most you can buy here are) you can find reviews saying how good it is. If the same tires are tested ..but by different publications, on different days, using different sizes and a different car, you will get different results. can't really go wrong with any of them. ws80 is listed there but hasnt really been tested yet. They are just assuming its the best because new. |

Got fed up of simply this week, tried to get a hold of someone for install/balance to no avail. Usually don't pick up the phone, I understand they are busy, but they just lost a customer. Steelcase had the same tires for $1/tire more, going there. Saves me the hassle of driving in that construction shithole and it will get done during my lunch. |
^FWIW they are very responsive by email. That said, I also didn't go with simply for my winters... |

I did email him, he did answer on the price, but i wanted to setup a time and make sure i am not stuck there waiting like in the past even though i set a time...i would much rather have that convo over the phone and not on email. Anyway, i am actually glad i found a place closer to home. I don't want to drive there tbh. |

This isn't a fitted cover, but it might as well be. I bought the one for medium sized cars and it barely fit due to the width of the car I guess? It's really snug around the fenders/quarters and was just long enough. Can't pull the cover past the tail pipes to give you an idea... How tight is your cover? Being in an underground garage I assume there is lots of traffic too right? If the cover isn't snug that's probably why you get dust under the cover, which is shit because you risk scratching the paint when taking it off. |

Any feedback yet SDC2R? I would consider something like that in the future if they're still good in the snow.... and if they make a 155/80/13 size |

lawls they're very smooth given current conditions, way better feedback than a full winter and much less vibration thru the wheel feedback. grip is great for what they are. |

That's amazing, let's assume HST paid on car is approx $5,200 (regardless if you traded in another car for it offset, the HST was paid at one point) + $5,000 depreciation hit over 5 years (assuming he owns it that much and I am being conservative, chances are it will be higher), plus insurance of $600/year @ 5 years = $3,000 plus gas at 1,500 km @ 15L/100km @ $1.50/L for 5 years = $1,687, + sparco car cover $160 + HST = $181 So roughly $2/km driven or $3k per summer to own this ornament. balling.gif |

Tires 23 for the west end. |
Yeah, Im getting my tire sets through Simply. Their prices during the groupbuys are about $50 cheaper then 23. Not a huge amount though. That being said, 23 sell the WT mats for $150 cash tax/freight all-in. |

When I google 'TPMS canister' no company 'makes' them ... they're all DIY home-brew specials.... |

I pieced my wifes wintAr set myself and ended up cheaper compared to tires 23 or simply...saved $50 or so. Bought WS80's from Costco which included mounting and balancing and got the steelies from speedtech. Need to do an oil change on the M and then park it till next year |

Not sure they make sense in Toronto with the number of spots required. I can't see using these if there's another level under you anyway. My building has only one parking level and the building is on a large piece of land with only one spot made for each 3 units or so. |

So how do the neighbors get their car? What a pain in the ass... Like if I forgot something in the car I'm fucked??? LOL |

how the hell does that work? what if the upper deck guy needs his car? can you be a jerk and never move your car so his car is forever stuck there? |

Basically you're bitching about the scenario of coming home and finding your neighbour's car is at ground level and so you'd have to get out, press the button then he can park his car on the bottom part of the lift? I'd consider this no different than coming home and finding a car blocking your driveway and you'd have to go inside, get the keys, move it out of the way so you can put your car into the garage. Not ideal, but this beats circling down several floors to get to your spot. |

Had all 6 injectors replaced last year (near tail end of CPO warranty) as it kept throwing CEL. Now I've had 2 power loss warnings in the last 3 days. (restarting the car's fine) Probably keep this for 1 more year then get a different beater (even though I love the power and bells and whistles in this thing) :p |

Diesel will last longer than your typical gas engine if you maintain it properly. I don't need a SUV so once VW fixes their bullshit TDI scandal, I want to jump in to a Golf Wagon TDI. I build a 328d on BMW.ca, it came out more than a X3 Diesel. WTF BMW? |

(restarting the car's fine) Probably keep this for 1 more year then get a different beater (even though I love the power and bells and whistles in this thing) :p I've had to replace an injector as well, due to water infiltration on the harness (stupid bmw design where cowling cracks and lets water in), then two other injectors were leaking. I've done the glow plugs and modules (only the module was bad), the DEF injector, and a map sensor. Combined with the EGR cooler cracking (replaced twice under warranty due to faulty design), I can't say its without its fair share of issues. All the known BMW issues have been addressed. I think there is only one that I have yet to experience, and that is either the DEF tank level sensor or heater. I have stayed on top of the maintenance, all fluids in the car have been changed recently (tranny, diffs, transfer case). Good thing is the diesel still has a mechanical water pump, so no random dying of the electric water pump on all other models (like your beater), leaving you stranded. No HPFP to fail (gas model). |

If your car is a mazda or american, yes XD Otherwise, new stuff seems to be very good at dealing with winter salt. My dad had a 1st gen tt that was 10+ years old, and it had no rust on the body. The only thing that rusted out were the rear springs. I did krown my mustang when I had it. Seeing how it was built/put together, you'd understand why I did. But if you don't drive a mustang then you're good |

I had my EP from 2003 to 2015. Never bothered with rust proof, there was ZERO rust. Not even the usual Honda fender rust. Most EPs I've seen on the road seem to be in decent shape. The car was made in England so maybe they sourced better metal there. Not sure. The Toyota won't be getting any special treatment. Just weekly washes in the winter (Petro seasons pass shared with neighbours). |

Krowning definitely makes a noticible difference when working on the cars with seized bolts and generally in nicer looking condition underneath vs not. It's so cheap why not do it? |

Yup. If it was a fancier car that was more of a toy to me vs a daily driver I wouldn't but it's a daily driver. I'm just not going to do it under the hood as that can get messy. |

I did a winter prep on my buddies brand new TLX and his dads RDX yesterday. it's crazy how crappy the dealers prep a brand new car, imo they didn't even look like new cars even though the tlx has 1200kms on it and the RDX has 500km on it. now they look new and are nice and sealed up for winter. i also found a new carnuba wax to put over the sealant that makes it bling pretty nicely. (shitty ipotato pics) ^how new cars are supposed to look imo. i also had to clay them like a mother, the paint was so contaminated. |
- I thought this was common knowledge already? yeah new cars...pretty much it's off the factory floor, parked outside in a huge lot by the rail ready to go, they sit on the rail cars for the trip, offloaded into another huge lot and sit until ready to ship to a dealer. the car then sits (most likely) outside a the dlr until sold. for acura's the usually sit a bit longer than honda's lol. the dlr just PDI's it, gases it up, washes it and it's delivered to you as such. they don't have time/money/manpower or care to 'detail' a car for you...as long as it's washed it's considered ready to go, they're busy as crap as it is i find. honda/acura paint already isn't the best from factory which doesn't help. regardless, most new cars will look 10x better after a good claybar and polish/wax...esp dark colours. |
I picked up some Lamin-X, gonna cover up the headlights and fogs. FindWay mats in, (beater) rims on, rust-proof'd, RainX'd... |

They never "detail" the cars from dealership unless you are getting a Bentley or something. Anyone need winter tires? Goodyear Ultra Grip 185/70/14. Used Half season. My buddy has them in his shop. He purchased them last winter for a customer. They sold or selling the car and somehow he has the tires. $75 per tire and he might throw in free install/balance. |
i did my car today. i'm friggin tired. got my winters put on the stock wheels, probably put those on tmrw. i also found a wax to put on after sealing that makes metallic paint bling. |

I washed and waxed my car last month with the over the counter Mcguires Gold Class. I really need to look into getting some better equipment for the Spring time. |

chemical guys opened up in aurora and sauga. for $100 you can put yourself together a nice kit with proper microfibres, drying cloths, waxes and soap. |

That sounds like a good xmas gift for myself. I guess the hardware is where it gets $$$. |

I need to stock up on big microfibre towels, I am tired of the small ones I have for each car wash |

Huh, I love chemical guys stuff and eshine is only about 20 minutes from me. The only shitty thing about them is their store hours suck. Im totally serious I bought an old beige Camry as I knew someone who was selling one. Original owner, low kilometers and great condition. Price was too hard to pass up and I can use it as my "drive it in crappy weather if I buy a 3 season car" or "drive it and not give a fuck where I leave it car" I get it this weekend as the owner is doing the safety and emissions etc. |

It will be for sale by Spring. |

WTF is with all the CSI members buying beige Toyotas????? Jeffos isn't the only one recently don't laugh, but a friend offered me this, his italian grandfather barely drove it and he lost his licence. no it's not a old taxi cab so it's actually pretty nice inside, has like 30,000km on it for stupid cheap. it drives like its floating |

Dude those are the best highway machines ever made! Like floating on clouds driving down the road. |

I most likely will be - I'll know more in the next month or so. I kind of don't want to because it's such an awesome daily driver but I'm thinking of going with a 3 season car potentially plus the Camry of doom for a go train/winter car. |

Decent options in there. Everyone can use an appliance from time to time. They've got their place. How's the house search coming? |

Bbbbballllin' 92k Kms V6 EX(something model). Excellent condition, so good it blows my mind haha. Power seat for the driver even. Has the sweet gold badges which I promptly removed with the exception of the Toyota symbols. Removed the classy burgundy pin stripe along the side. Also fixed the ugly Amber part in the tail lights Before After Timing belt just done, new tires, just serviced. For what I payed it's a steal and it drives great. Pretty happy with this one given what I'm going to use it for. It's actually semi quick too with the V6 (for what it is) |
