Have you turned your AC on?

Today might be the day, it's 26 inside the house and humidity is 60%. Yes/no?

I've had all windows open for the last 48 hours, no breeze doe.

In before hator/eddie/townhouse dwellers tell me how their house is at -9 right now because so well insulated.

Wife is out of twon with 5 bg's, otherwise AC would've been on by now, this is the time to experiment.

I took a shower instead, I am cool now. Temp did go up by one degree to 27C now

I am going to try a different technique doe, i recently installed a 150CFM Panasonic fan in my bathroom (baller) and turned on the furnace fan. If I can get humidity to drop under 50% i should be ok.

Re: Have you turned your AC on?

Only turned the AC on for one night a few weeks ago when humidity was killer. The AC is loud as fuck and about 20 years old so we try not to use it. We just have a fan upstairs and open main floor windows and it seems to exhaust the house pretty well.

What you really need to do though is modify your cold air return to only draw from the basement where it's cool and block the returns on the other floors.

Re: Have you turned your AC on?

For those doing the window and fan thing another thing to try is getting a cheap furnace fan off Kijiji or if you know someone in the industry. You can make a little enclosure to mount the exhaust on a window and it's quiet and will pull a hell of a lot more cfm than a traditional house fan will

Elaborate on what ?

Windows open in my place doesn't usually amount to much flow through the house.

You can easily alter the flow a bit by capping off vents downstairs to get the upstairs a bit more cool air. I think I've only got two vents downstairs that are open. Ceiling fans also help a lot. All the vents in the basement are capped as well.

Pretty manageable though, keep windows/blinds closed during the day. Only open at night. RH stayed less than 60% and it wasn't uncomfortable, kid was overheating a bit, but she needs to learn life under this roof won't be easy.

This has been a DIY mission for a while, but we've reached the point of diminishing returns (actually we reached that before I even started this DIY).

The good thing is I found where the leak is, after pressurizing the system to 150 psi the coil is where the leak is at. Going to pay to have someone come in replace it, even though it's tempting to do myself now that it's cooling down.

I recommend just paying somebody, it is definitely not DIY. You need to braze the hi/lo pressure lines to the new coil, you need a vacuum pump to pump the lines down and then obviously a set of gauges to check the lines once it has been refilled with refrigerant. If however you do try and DIY this, please keep us updated with pics!

not sure what exactly you are trying to accomplish here? your wife must be right now and regretting her decision for marrying you and having a kid with you.

yeah pretty fair that you get to work in an AC office environment during the day and your wife is stuck at home w/ a cranky hot baby.

I'll be sure to nominate you for the Dad / Husband of the Year.

He won dad of the year when he admitted to sucking the snot out of his kid's nose to relieve her stuffy nose.

Re: Have you turned your AC on?

blah blah blah lol

all this talking about the baby and NO AC. What about countries who don't have AC....it's a NA thing...luxury...baby will be fine.

Now...is it a nice move since wifey is probably pissed off and looking after the baby the majority of the time...I'd say no but then again I don't have to live under the same roof so that's risky's move \:\)

Re: Have you turned your AC on?

As a kid, temperature changes didn't bug me one bit. Played in all sorts of extreme weather.

The issue I see with it, is it worth the discomfort to save $50 for the year? For me it's not, so I just set to to where's comfortable. Now for older homes that have huge bills I understand.

I like the house at 23.5, wifey likes 19. So it's usually at 19 at night for her.

Re: Have you turned your AC on?

Risky since you've found the leak and are willing vacuum and charge it youeself why not fix the leak and proceed? Why replace the part?

Re: Have you turned your AC on?

The A coil is pretty old, not worth fixing. Losing about 40 psi of pressure over 48 hours, so pretty slow leak.

I can change it myself, but simply don't have the time right now so i will pay for someone to come in an get it done in a couple of hours.

I love how everyone thinks this is about saving money though, entertaining for sure

Don't put me in that group!

Re: Have you turned your AC on?

No. No AC so far.
That said, when the temp in Toronto was like 34, south Ajax was 25 lol.

I typically only have 3 or 4 days in a year where the AC is on.

Re: Have you turned your AC on?

turned mine on. if the thermostat says its 24 in the house, upstairs is brutal.
i work from home too so i can't be sitting here sweating hoping to catch a breeze

days that its gonna be below 25 outside i'll turn it off and do windows
