need a bicycle....

I dont care where to buy the bike from. used, new whatever. As long as I can ride the bike in a combination of road and trail conditions.

I dont know what to look for exactly, but I dont want to spend helva lot of dough on the bike, but I will spend a reasonable amount of $$ on a good bike.

Since we all have XD biking experts on here - help me out CSi-ON.

Re: need a bicycle....

Wait for the experts to chime in, I am not one.

If I was you, I'd get a decent mountain bike (Trek, etc used) put some road friendly tires and roll that. I have that as a ride around hood bike. Bought it for $300 used, has served me well for 8 years now.

Check pinkbike.com Lot's of selection.

Re: need a bicycle....

How much are you willing to spend? It is much easier to give recommendations when you have a budget, or even a ballpark figure of how much you want to spend, we have no idea what a "reasonable" amount is in your opinion.

What are you going to use the bike for? I know you mentioned road and trail but is this bike going to be used for commuting or is this for exercise/fun.
And when you say "trail", are you wanting something to do some off road single track riding or are you referring to the flat, not so challenging trails covered in woodchip and/or stone?

Re: need a bicycle....

I personally would narrow my search for a cx bike (considering your riding considerations). It's sort of the rally car of the bike world. Versatile, fast on pavement, can be used offroad. Ok sure, not serious offroad like robbbby would do, but non paved/fire road/gravel/grass/single track/mud is fine.

But like others have mentioned, without a clue on what your budget is, there is zero actual recommendation(s) of a series of bikes.

max a grand on the bike.

I'd say it'd be used for approx 100km a week.

I've been trolling kijiji and I have no idea what's a good brand bike.

Re: need a bicycle....

I'm going to recommend a hardtail mountain bike, even a rigid fork would be good but that's tough to find. Cyclocross bike is shit for somebody just starting to ride, a mountain bike will have more relaxed geometry and steering and will be a lot more functional for getting started.
Cyclocross bikes are useless for anything but racing cyclocross.

There is a guy on pinkbike (I think it's a store), that sells brand new Jamis bikes for a good price. You should be able to grab a brand new 2013 slightly above entry level bike within your budget.

Re: need a bicycle....

Top of the ad says firm, and there is probably tax on top of it since they're a legit company. I'm sure if you showed up with cash though you could swing something. No idea on retail, i'm sure you could find out with a quick search.

At least with a new bike you are getting a warranty.

^good suggestion on Jamis.
That is direct from the Canadian distributor. They are located by Yorkdale mall (if they havent moved yet). No idea why they're doing this, because it's undercutting their distribution channel...but meh, whatever. The Jamis stuff is a good buy. Worth checking out.

You wouldn't build up a retro bike like that after seeing what those parts cost. A beat up to shit 1st & 2nd gen answer manitou fork like that probably goes for $500. I've seen mint condition ones go for like $900.

hah.
Hatorade probably just wants to see you out $100 :p

I couldnt dig up pics of the Manitou (I had the Manitou 2). But I have evidence nonetheless. I sold my old stuff. See below:

That trek 6000 was a neon yellow from like 1991. My Manitou was even threaded--which was perfect, as this bike had a threaded headset. I also had a neon yellow w/ orange & green splatter paint job steel Marin. I love the early 90s stuff.

I almost bought an AMP B2 for $150 too! It was bad timing though--I was in Montreal on a weekend roadtrip and the guy was back in Tdot. He sold it the next day \:\(

FWIW I picked up the Manitou 2 for 45 bucks shipped off pink bike :P bhahaha.

Dude, forget the manufacturer.
Get what you like/looks good/feels right/comfortable.
For 1k, the difference between bikes is not going to be ground breaking. You can rest assured that regardless of what you choose, you will get a quality rig that's going to do all the things you want it to do.

So pick the one with the best paint job XD

Re: need a bicycle....

This may be obvious but in the event you do not know, bikes are largely made up of *two* major parts. The frame and the group of components on it (incl wheelset etc). You can see some frames with cheap components or 3x the money with better components. The components will be one of two brands basically. Buying a scott gets you a nice frame, but it can be still a crappy bike as a package.

The thing I found with my 960 is that for the components you get, you aren't going to find a better deal. It's a $1500 bike for $1000.. If you stack it up against a regularly priced $1000 bike, it will always come out on top. I've figured out bikes depreciate as bad as cars do. I was looking at a Kona as well, and it's components are 2 levels below the 960 for the same price.. Also, like it was mentioned, if it's not comfortable, it doesn't matter what bike you're on..

Seriously? Who cares what the people in OT are saying, chances are all the people making recommendations are weekend warriors anyways and truly have no fucking clue.
You do realize the larger audience you start polling the more opinions you are going to get, right?
There is no wrong answer at that price point like 4age has already stated. Find a hardtail in your price range you like and buy it. I already gave you my opinion and said to go with norco since they generally have slightly better components for the price compared to the big brands like specialized/trek/giant. The more people you keep asking for advice the more differing suggestions you are going to keep receiving.

However, if >I< were to get a mtb, it's just for shits and giggles. And for me, my chosen path would be SS. Not because more harder more better. Just because more basic more fun. I don't know wtf I'm doing on a mtb anyways.

Now in a road context, I also agree. However, a fixed drivetrain is much more efficient at early season training in getting those legs back. Nothing else will spike power outputs in the same manner--you are forced to stand and mash up hills, and then you are forced yet again to spin like a crazed person going down hills. Working on both cadence and power output simultanously, and ensuring that any distance you cover was with 100% pedalling has it's advantages. Not arguable. Just awesome. Truly is more harder more better.

That being said, I have a race bike. For racing. It has gears, it goes fast. And when you ride something like that after 3 months of riding a fixed POS, you feel like you're doping. So for road, the relevance is there. On mountain--I agree. Not really relevant. But for perhaps 90% of the people out there who swing their leg over a mountain bike, they are only doing it for the fun or for the fitness. In my perspective, an SS rig is absolutely fun. Just like the days of being a kid and riding a bmx. You don't worry about anything but the ride itself.

Today I went to Jamis and checked out the bike robbby had posted. It's not a bad bike. However, I went to gears earlier this week I saw giant with similar specs with 27.5 wheels for 579. I'll check out one more local bike shop this weekend.

Check sportinglife too. Good prices.

For most people who don't ride for the 5+ months of cold weather, i'm not sure I totally agree with the SS to "get those legs back". Though I don't follow the whole base mileage concept religiously, I do agree with it somewhat and don't think hopping on a single speed after not having ridden for 5+ months and mashing up hills is a great idea or pedaling at such a low cadence/high power output.

Which is why a road fixed gear should not have such high gearing \:\)
I think once again we're on the same page. I do not advocate mashing up a hill at 40rpm. There's a clear issue with going up a climb at that rpm.

But ok - good conversation. If you don't agree with riding a single speed to get the legs back, are you advocating that riding a faster, more efficient geared bike is better? Most people with the option of "copping out" on a climb and dropping a few gears will take it. That isn't doing them any favors with regards to building fitness.

And yes, one can force themself to ride a lower gear early season on a road bike, but ultimately, you aren't forced to spin as you otherwise would on a fixed gear (read: no coasting option)...so the benefit is not identical to riding a fixed for a couple months before swinging a leg over the geared bike.

I think people like 355si can advocate for me with regards to my ability to spin. That didn't come out of no where. And I'd argue that most people who strictly ride a geared bike generally would not have a similar range of "operating cadence/rpm". There are benefits to be had there.

Re: need a bicycle....

I advocate nothing. The guy is a hack. Clearly he has some form of motor in his rear hub that allows him to make semblance of pedalling quickly while blasting up hills.

I missed in the previous post where you mentioned fixed gear, thought we were talking about regular SS. Fixed gear is even dumber IMO, if it was such a great training tool everybody would be riding one. They are impractical in every sense of the word, again, IMO. I'm not an olympian, I don't need a fixed gear bike to train and prevent me from coasting, or use one so I don't cheat myself by gearing down. If anybody actually cared THAT much about training they could select the gear they want on a geared bike so they could train a particular cadence/power output. If you don't have the mindset/willpower to stay in a particular gear on a geared bike there is no way you would ride a fixie.

I also don't see how dropping gears on a climb is "copping out", cycling is both an aerobic and anaerobic exercise. Just because you aren't mashing up a climb using every bit of muscle power you have on tap, doesn't mean you aren't working. So I drop a couple gears and spin my ass off at 110 instead, it's just as beneficial overall. Look at Lance, after his comeback he went from being a powerhouse to a crazy spinner in order to try and keep up with the younger guys.

Maybe it's because i'm not a pedal masher and prefer to spin or put the power down while seated, but I personally don't see the point of what you're suggesting. I have gears and I can easily keep a 110+ cadence for distance
or put the power down at 60rpm. The more I think about it the more I question why anybody besides hipsters or track cyclists would even bother with fixed gear, but in reality there probably is very few people who do use them anyways.

To each their own I guess. As long as you enjoy riding one who am I to say otherwise.

The only way to find a real winner in the geared vs. fixed battle is to have a good old fashioned race \:\)

LOL!
No!!! You are missing the point!
I'm saying fixed gear is a good training tool--not it's the fastest thing on 2 wheels! A geared bike is!!!

And as for "no one does it"--actually, it's an old school roadie training method. Still commonly adopted. When I say "roadie", i dont mean rich dentists and layers. I mean true road cycling enthusiasts (read: not bike porn lovers). Oh and Lance has a fixed training bike also...sooooooooo...

And and and! Sure, lance spins up mountains at 110rpm. He isn't downshifting and copping out. He is still riding a big gear--he only happens to be able to turn it! That's the key point. No sense riding a bigger gear if one cannot even turn a small one. There is a lot of fitness benefit. All this is akin to driver training beginning with a go kart before moving to a formula ford \:\)

Anyway, like you said--different strokes for different folks. I will continue stubbornly training on my crappy fixed gear XD

EDIT: I'm saying no copping out and spinning a small gear--context is that at least in the GTA, there are no real climbs. I can stand and climb every hill I've encountered, and still be able to keep up with a roadie. Now, take me to blue mountain and the story changes. Fact is, there are no real climbs in an 80km radius around me. 1 gear for training is all that's needed.

lol you are missing my point as well. I understand there are benefits to training on a fixed gear bike, if you are a pro! To suggest a fixed gear bike for anybody but a professional is silly. You yourself use one to "train", what are you training for? Are you racing? How much did you ride over the winter? See where i'm going with this... it's an extreme measure with minimal benefit for a recreational rider. Again, this is just my personal opinion.

Next up, recumbent vs. geared \:\)
