basement subfloor question
|
So any of you chumps do your basement yourself? Mine is finished, but I am ripping out the carpet. I'm planning on using drilock for the subfloor and then some 5" Bruce turlington lock and fold engineered wood in a floating floor.

What did you use for a subfloor? Is there a better or cheaper subsitute than drilock?

platon + OSB on mine, cheaper than those pre made panels but less convenient if you have a hard time getting full stock into your basement. Its the same thing.

That stuff is a GIANT fucking ripoff. You can do it for 1/4 of the price if you put in a bit of work. Not to mention because it is in 2x2' sections and it doesn't butt up perfect you have moisture get between the actual membrane. Slim chance it would rot the osb or anything would even happen, but still, for that price, fuck that shit.

I think you will find that you wont need infloor heat with a raised membrane subfloor, does not get cold at all

You don't need silicone, thats just bananas
also don't need a table saw, circular saw or circular saw + saw sled are more than enough. You are more likely to hurt yourself using a table saw trying to rip big sheet goods unless you have the proper setup with in and outfeed support.

Delta FL is too expensive and hard to find in some areas.
Unless you have an elephant in your basement than you are fine, thats what the OSB is for to distribute the weight load as well, its not rocket science. If it was such a bad product people would be complaining.

In general Platon can be had cheaper than Delta FL. Delta FL also comes in smaller rolls generally so it may seem cheaer but Price Per Sqaure foot its usually more expensive. Check out the nerds on RFD, they documented it to death avg 0.30 psf for Platon and 0.5X for Delta FL

My current house the previous owner used the dricore subfloor tiles,900 sq ft basement must of cost the guy huge bucks! We can definatly stay down here comfortably.I wanted to use them at my old house but they were to costly so I just threw the laminate over the concrete(with the thickest underlay) and boy was it cold down there.So for me,yes I feel the difference in comfort level.
My kids will actually stay down there for hours without bugging us now.
