insurance renewal time.... what do you pay and who you with?

currently with johnsons and i'm paying just under 200 for an 06 mazda 3. 28 years old, 1 claim (not at fault), no tickets. my insurance has gone up 3 years in a row. i think it's time for a change. so far i've only checked pc insurance but with them it's about 225 a month.

er, don't we have this thread like every 3 months?
checked that smartcoverage.ca site....eih rate was same as what i get with either TD MM (w/ discount for working at Honda) and at RBC Ins. (with discount for having mortgage there). now if that smartcoverage rate goes down if the apply my discount on top of their rate....that'd be worth swtiching.

I am pretty sure my rates will be going up come september since I got dinged with two tickets in the past year that I couldn't fight in court. Doesn't matter, m3 is coming off insurance anyway.

Just call every insurance company you can. Make a list of all the crap you want so that they are even and dial away. Take your lowest rate and go back to your current company, see if they will match it.

My wife and I have been with Johnson/Unifund for about 5 years and they have been great with us. Ive had an accident and 2 minor tickets and they really havent jacked up our rates. We get multiple discounts for been grads from a certain college, another for my wife's profession, multi-car, accident and ticket forgiveness.
Paying just under $300 for the 07 Si, 10 Genesis and our house insurance. We are also both over 30 and we live out in the boonies of Hamilton.

Someone please edumecate me. My policy renewal comes in to effect in feb.'11 and the monthly payments are withdrawn automatically from my bank account. If I find a better rate by then do I notify my current company that I want to cancel before that date or will the new company take care of all the BS switch-over stuff?

^ check your policy (i.e. read the fine print) -- some require a month's notice before cancellation.
just have the new policy start when you want it to start and time it with when you want the old one terminated.

Just cancel on the expiry date.....anytime you cancel your whole policy before the expiry date, you would be hit with a short rate cancellation where there is a penalty built in.

weird. i'm with johnsons too. for both integras full coverage, no accidents or tickets and i was paying $224/month, then i turned 25 last year and it went to $178/month. hasen't gone back up since.
then again i'm just insuring two $3000 (if that) integras.

just got a letter from TD MM based on the new Ont. gov. deal whereby starting Sept 1st you can adjust options within your own insurance policy, thus HOPEFULLY making it cheaper (without dropping major important tings).

I have a friend who was with TD, and they wanted to jack the rate by 30%... she switched to Johnson & Johnson and got a rate lower than the original rate she was getting with TD.

i used The Personal before, not bad, easy to deal with for 1800 call in's and had very cheap rates even without applied discounts. for sure try them out. as for coverage when shit hits the fan, cant comment since i nvr had a claim, nor did anyone i know.

I switched to Smart Coverage last year b/c they were the cheapest. No issues so far. Winter tire discount and can pay by Credit Card monthly.
Sister is with Johnson (assuming you didn't mean J&J?) for like 10 years. Amazing rate (but not for me) and service. No issues and in her case they smoke everyone's rate every year.

I was originally with TDMM, it was a fluke that I got in, but had to cancel after they found out I had a modded civic (fukrs). That's when I made the switch to TDCT. There's no doubt that TDMM has great rates and service.

So I called Johnson and The Personal and basically they quoted the same (~$174-175/mnth). The only difference is:
- Johnson: 2mil liability; Personal: 1mil
- Johnson: Vehicle depreciation coverage is part of the policy and covers what the vehicle price is 2yrs prior to accident; Personal: only 2yr coverage and covers the vehicle price when purchased.
All other deductibles are the same @ 1G.
Would it be safe to say that Johnson has the better deal?

I have an address in north york, south of yonge/sheppard and it's significantly chepaer than my scarb address. If my cars were registered in scarb I'd be paying about 35% more. Just a FYI.

My "address" is RH, which unfortunately is still quite high. When I lived in NY (bayview/shep) it was at least another 20% cheaper. If my cars were in scarbs it would be instantly $4600/yr to insure both cars....FUCK YOU INSURANCE!!!!

Ok, how does switching to another company work? My current insurance expires on Feb.18 and I'm not sure if the payment they withdrew from my account recently was for Jan. or Feb. If I switch now would the new company take care of all the "paper" work? Would I get a a partial refund from the "old" company since I did not use it for the full month?

No - you have to terminate the old company yourself -- start by calling up your current company and let them know by phone (most likely they will ask you to fax them a note (it would be wiser if you ask for confirmation on return)).
Depends on the company they may need advance notice (or even some sort of "penalty" payment -- e.g. pay an extra month but not have the coverage?). So if you're going to jump just ensure the new company doesn't start covering you until the day after your old one expires.

If your car is not owned by you (leased or financed) make sure to let the owner of the car know who's now insuring their asset. In my case BMW had to send a letter saying they understand I'm changing companies before my old insurance company would cancel the policy.

Update.
Cancelled with TD and went with Johnson Inc. Told them that I have two places of residence but currently live at the NY location. Dropped from $2111 to $1795. About $300 dif. Now I have to change my ownership addy to reflect the insurance addy.
All in all I think it was a good switch as TD was raping me @ $261/mnth which is about $3132/yr. Fuk that noise.

For a good lol, you GTA guys should give your insurance company my postal code L0R1C0 or some bumfuck town like Dunnville.
Wife and I have been with Johnson for about 10 years now and no issues. Even with a few minor tickets and an at fault our rates have basically stayed the same. 2 new cars and the house and we are $300 month.

Just got my renewal letter.. rate went up 8%. Currently paying $201/month, new rate is $217/month.
so I just did a quote at one my friend suggested, and if it stays close to the quote, I end up saving 20% ($162/month). And have a lower deductable. if I up the deductable, it only saves me $8/month, and I lose out on some other benifits.

well, now ONT has the accident coverages we can pick/choose from, right? i hear that if you go with the msot basic of choices...and you're in a collision and need recovery help, you're pretty much fucked for $. thus most ppl (they know) will go with med-full coverage and the ins. co. will get their money, bastids. waiting for my renewal in may...if it goes up lots i'll be pissed.

yea, new rules don't help rates, it means you get less for what you currently pay for. which is what most ppl are seeing. Insurance companies are using it to raise rates to make up for the "fraud".
so with talking to some ppl in the industry, and hearing ppl talk about it on the radio and news. You need to find an insurance company that doesn't have too many customers in your area, esp if you are in a high fraud area (i.e. brampton/markham). So that way they will give you a lower rate cause they want to spread their business around a bit.
There is a point where they'll have a huge chunk of an area, and thats when they have to jack the rates, cause they'll have higher risk exposure to ppl who are looking to defraud the system.

just got my tdmm renewals in the mail today. gotta love how we get less for more or the same amt of money we're already paying, wtf. so if you want up to the same amt of money for certain coverage, you have to add the option and pay more for what we were getting before. so much for paying a bit less for getting less coverage
like that would happen.31 (soon to be 32), L4S postal, clean rec'd, single status, 08 STI 5dr hatch (i think it's considered wagon, thus maybe cheaper? lol). discount for working where i do.
$1575/yr or 131/mnth...but there is $68 for the year that i think is from my beater...maybe needs to be removed. so could be 1507/yr. when married next year it should drop nicely.

Employee "rate" is just a % discount. If the base rate goes up your premium still goes up.
Can't do a Johnson quote online, might give them a call later. It looks like I might save some $$ this year on the NSX insurance which should offset about half of the increase on the Insight.
Still, taking it up the bum again. Hopefully the bonus is nice at the end of the year.

$225 per month down from $236 per month but there are less coverages now.
I miss the days when I worked for an insurance company with personal lines insurance. I was paying $800 per car.

vas, 85 is pretty darn good, even for EK. i dunno, sometimes i wonder what these ins. companies do to get their pricing. i get a discount like you and my sti is like 131/mnth which isnt bad considering still 'single' and where i live. but when i get a quote for a honda fit...it's still like 119/month!
- $12 more a month to drive a car levels above it...weird. (mind you they put the sti as a 5dr wagon which helps i guess, and less of them involved in collisions/claims).both of a2bcaptain's cars are high claiming cars. (though so is an EK)

i just took the 240 off of belair and put it on the custom wheel plan
was payin $200 / month
now it's $27 / month (yes, two seven).
been waitin 5 years to get on that shit
pulsar is $125 / month (wawanesa)
bike $50 / month (state farm)
i also have my old 240sx beater hatch still insured (with belair) but 'suspended' so its only $10 a month
27 in vaughan, 1 ticket for speeding (15 over)

the broker is lant, in stoufville i think (www.lant-ins.ca)
you need:
-car thats 15 years old
-an appraisal for said car (not MTO style, but 'insurance' style. they cost about 200)
-10 yrs driving experience (from g2)
-a good record
-a daily driver insured regularly with your existing co
the policy covers hobby use only. meaning you only drive the car in a manner thats consistent with collector car use
aka no driving to work, no driving to get groceries, no racing, etc
which to me isnt a big deal because thats how i use the 240 anyway these days. the pulsar is my daily. and when its nice out i find myself taking the bike anyway

Mike, you can get cheaper premiums than Lant through Zehr brokers. Their plans are structured the same as Lant's but with better coverages (ie: $2MM liability).

I think the difference is the CMA discount. I have the U of T one but the credit is not as close as the CMA one. (had a friend who converted his discount from UT to CMA and the diff was significant)
I am not sure how much it is for the EK....don't have the policy in hand.

and the policy is a 19A appraised value, meaning if your car gets written off
you get the full value. no depreciation.

My pricing overall was similar but considering the scaled back the accident benefits, it was actually an "increase" as we are getting a lot less coverage for the $$$. Ontario auto is pretty messed up still.

Ok, since I am moving to Markham and I don't want to play games of keeping my cars at different address for savings I need a new company.
TDMM is increasing my M3 50% and my civic 20%.
I am looking to move two cars + home insurance. Male, 1 ticket, no accidents.
Who should I call? I need a company that does the LEAST amount of policies in Markham. It's due to the high amount of "professionals" in Markham almost everyone is with TDMM, which has killed rates for the area

What about adding the bike(s) as well?
State Farm is supposed to be very competitive for larger policies, so maybe look at tacking on some life coverage as well and see what they quote you. A friend of mine got a very good rate for him and his wife in Mississauga on a detached home, 2 cars, a bike and some life coverage (I think) with State Farm.

Insurance went down quite a bit this time, from $1788 to $1477 for a 06 Audi A4 Wagon.
Also how long do convictions and accidents stay on your record, I have an accident from 2004 and one speeding ticket from 2006 still on my driver's abstract.

My rates are still the best with TDMM
$120ish for the M3
$100 for the civic.
House is $5x.xx or 63 with tax / month.

Just renewed with Desjardins. Will be paying about $1300 now. My previous provider was Pembridge, they wanted $1800/yr on renewal. F that. This is a '99 SiR, no tickets, no accidents.

then have multipliers for things like driving record, postal code.. and discounts accordingly..

after i added the R back in Dec, i was talking to one of the reps and they get to modify their rates (i think) it was every 2 yrs as per Gov. regulations. either up or down, etc. and reassess rates, postal codes/etc.
anyways, he mentioned it USED to be north of steeles (non M postal code) was decently cheaper), but as of about 1-2 yrs ago this is no longer the case, and it's proving to be true, FTL.

yet for the sti with more power it was like 136/mnth lol. mind you the agent told me ins. takes into consideration how 'safe/newer' the car is more than they used too as well. plus the hatch was considered a wagon which dropped the rate. so essentially you could have a 2010 400+ hp audi s4 avant and pay less than someone in a 1998 civic/teg

Just saw that my premium went up and am quite surprised.
2010 Mazda 6 $2400 full coverage and house is at $1250. Both with Johnson. I find that quite high.
Anyone recommend some other company to check out? Or are those prices realistic?

Morris and Mackenzie (Montreal office) apparently its different then the Toronto office.
One thing I do admit though.. its a pretty good insurance company none the less.
Claim process was amazing when i needed to make a claim and they know my RSX is modified. so I cant complain there.
9 star rating, one accident (was not at fault) and i still have my forgiveness claim

I am with TDMM for everything.
I used to be with TDMM when I had the civic but they somehow found out it was modified (SC) and wanted to cancel my plan but I cancelled it before they did to avoid any crap. I would love to get back with them but back then somehow I was able to use them as I was not in any professional category that they listed.

Is your SO affiliated to any of their professional bodies/alumi? You can put it under her name.
I put it under my name since I get a higher discount than teachers (SO) with TDMM.

I don't know, best is to call. Their customer service is pretty good, you can get an agent to talk to you in less than a minute.

Got my renewal and it went up a whole $3/mth... $152 total, $103 for the Orlando and $49 for the house

Got a letter yesterday the motors insurance is closing Canadian operations. I only looked briefly at the letter but I believe smart coverage is still around, but motors insurance is done. They outlined a suggestion to keep them but change carriers at a significant cost increase. Like I said, I'll have to read it again.

^^ I called today, my renewal isn't processed yet, so they don't know what the new rate is. Obviously it will be higher than with the motors, so most likely I will be shopping for a new broker / insurance company

I haven't yet found a better rate but the loss of transportation replacement is a deal breaker if I can find something else in a similar price point, WTF? How does my car no longer qualify for that. I'm not certain what I'm paying now because since my last premium was paid (annually) I moved, added my wife on the policy, and lost my multi car discount, but this is about a 20-22% increase.
