200 whp b16a street build up results

i have been working on an NA b16a street build up for the last few months. my goal was to make 200 whp from the 1595cc b16a motor on 91 octane. several people and companies kicked down parts for the build. we basically used a stock bottom end and many more oem parts to reach our goal. we dynoed the 2000 si on 2 different dynoes a few days ago and had an average whp between the 2 of 201 whp. one of the dynoes was very low reading compared to other dynoes in my area. besides that we video taped the entire process and will be releasing it for viewing so ppl will have an example to fallow. the reason i did this is to help prevent ppl from making mistakes or taking a dead end build rout. there is a lot of misinformation on the web sites that are dedicated to honda tuning. this misinformation leads ppl on wild goose chases in their quest for power and needless meandering around. which causes ppl to get lost in a sea of information. seeing is believing and thats why i had everything video taped. it took 9 days @18-20 hours per day. the dynoes will be posted on ef-1/main.com. by the way the compression was 11.5 and we dynoed with a full exhaust and intake. all the video trailers will be veiwable on intertune.tv in a few weeks after we get things edited. stay tuned

just for reference since i"m not sure what tuner shops you were all working with, but for comparisons sake, what two dyno's did you run @ ?

Re: 200 whp b16a street build up results

ironically we dynoed on the two dyno's that tune the only 2 all motor 9 sec. cars. which is trackmasters (leslie durst 9.93) and churches automotive testing (ericks racing 9.99) one was a dyno jet and the other was a dynapac. the dyno jet at track masters is a very consevative dyno we made 195 .somthing and churches we made 206.5. i wanted to do a 3rd dyno but we ran out of time. none the less the average beween the 2 reached our goal. both dyno facilities were very helpfull and i thank them for their time and efforts. shawn and bubba are both excellent tuners.

very interesting, especially since trackmasters has notoriously low numbers, very good work!

Re: 200 whp b16a street build up results

Good stuff.... but i thought oversized valves and radical cam's were kind of a no no. I woudl like for you to elaborate on that.

I like the setup, and kudo's to you on the number's. But i also noticed that you used ITR head. So the only thing B16 is the bottom end. So im guessing the oversized valve's and some milling of the head got you to 11.5?

None the less, good job. Cant wait to see the vid's.

Re: 200 whp b16a street build up results

Oversized valves???? I did not see anything about oversized valves, just high compression valves. Then again I just skimmed the other links.

Omniman,
Great work!!! I can’t wait to see all the video footage you guys took. I’m sure I can learn a great deal from this build up. Once again, very impressive work!! Two thumbs up!!!

Re: 200 whp b16a street build up results

If you look at stock valves you will notice they have a round recessed cut in them. Look at the first pic. Now if valve surface was flat, like in the seconded pic it will raise compression a bit. I wonder if you could actually dome the valve surface to raise compression even more….hmmmm……

Oversized valves allow more air into the combustion camber. They might also raise comp a bit, but I’m not sure about that.

Re: 200 whp b16a street build up results

there will be a video released in a month that will explain and show how i did this build. the information thats in the video will help better explain how things really work. also all the parts and modifications done to make this kind of power. for the record there was no over sized valves used. we only used a type-r head to save time. all the modifications to the head will be released in the video. there will also be a section on the transmission.

i like how he was allegedy using lots of oem parts...i would love to see a buildup like that on a type R to see how much they could get out of it

thanks for doing this - I don't have the cash to experiment, so every little "how-to" post is appreciated

I would recommend this as a great source for anyone with a b16...

almost makes me want to sell my car and get one. so i too can redo this..

low expense > high hp output .. you win both ways!~!

How hard would it be to get a JDM ITR to 200HP? Good work by the way......shows that it doesn't take much to get good numbers...just knowledge.

i dont see why it wouldnt if all the emissions equipment was hooked up and the stock ecu had some reprograming for obd-2 compliance.

the header might have to be replaced since its a slip tube.

Omniman, I had a quick question. Why did you go with the m22 cams from RM, instead of the all-so-popular m24a cams? Im looking at doing something like this buildup in my 99 Si, and Im wondering which pair to go with. Thanks!

The cams used were from Dynamic Autosport (I don't recall which ones specifically). The M24a is no longer in the RM product line and the M22 cams will be too big for a 1.6L. I've talked with Rocket at lengths about cams, compression, etc. for my current build.
