Back in October, actually it was the last trip to Newport for the final cruise in @ the Jug. On the way up I noticed a slight sound coming from my tranny. Explained it to a few different people, they said it was prolly a pilot bearing or a throwout bearing. I didn't think it was the case as they were both brand new with my new clutch. I thought maybe it was a bearing inside the tranny...as they all weren't replaced when I did the lsd. Anyway...drove it up and back, and that evening went into town. By the time I hit Vienna the sound had worsened so I came home and parked it. A few weeks later, I got around to pulling the tranny and there the tranny has sat until last night. Pulled it apart and look what I found.. What you are looking @ is the end of the counter shaft. The bottom of the shaft that has the teeth sheared off is the gear that directly contacts the final drive and differential. A side view of the entire countershaft. Top View Couple more different angles Here are 2 of the 3 missing teeth. I am gonna assume that the 3rd one went out w/the fluid. Those 2 were stuck to the tranny magnet on the casing. Upon further inspection everything looks good. I got lucky that nothing else was seriously damaged. I plan to replace the shaft, restack the gears and put it back together, good as new. I just need a b16a counter shaft...anyone know where I can get one? |

S4C tranny? That's pretty common. I bet your ring gear is damaged too. The same thing will happen again with another S4C counter shaft. Best bet is to upgrade to a GSR/ITR counter shaft and ring gear, but that means your LSD won't fit. The GSR/ITR countershaft is the same as far as tooth count, they just don't break like those do, perhaps a different material or surface treatment. |
Why is the b16 and the GSR the same part # then? |
lol |

or since it's out you could just have them cryo-treated and they'd be stronger than any oem part anyways. |

Wow that sucks, Sorry about the luck man |

Well..I'd like to try another one..if it becomes an issue, I'll deal with it then...this one lasted through alot of wheelhops & such.. Ring gear looks mint..I can take some pics and post up if need be. The car drove great..shifted great..no problems..I would have never know aside from the noise. |

Actually, you do NOT need a bearing press @ all to get the top 2 bearings off that shaft. And if you need a b16 shaft, I think I may even have one. -Chuong Doh, I just noticed that I was quoting import tuner. He is right about the case bearings needing a slide hammer. |

Yea, I am concerned w/the countershaft right now.. However I was looking @ the bearings in the case, and 1 of them, forget which one..seemed like it could used replacing. So I'll look into that once I get the counter reassembled. Btw..4door you have PM!!! |

Well I found a countershaft & ring gear shipped for $150. IT's on the way...went to pickup a press, but they were out. So waiting on that to come in. Once it's all here..I'll post some pics of the install.. |

Well, picked up my press today...I'll snap some pics when it's up and assembled. When I get some time, I'll start to work on it. Can't wait for thing to warm up.. |

I had some time today before the bowl game and I thought I'd try to see how the new press would do. Amazing how easy things come apart when you have the right tools..lol. Harbor Frieght 12 ton press, $109.00 Harbor Frieght Large Bearing Seperator $19.99 The countshaft is apart, going to double check all the parts before it's reassembled. Enjoy. Getting everything lined up on the press. Apart. The broken shaft to the right. An "aerial view" Next round will be reassembly. |

Cool. But you could have done it without the press and the bearing seperator |

looks good adam, you are breaking shit while my car looks pretty in the garage |

Besides I have needed one for a while now...just gave me a reason to get one. Wheelstuds, bearings/etc. I bought a book, and it showed a few ways to get them apart w/o a press..but I wanted one, and plus it adds to my collection of tools..lol. |

I guess my first car accident was nasty but i walked out alright, poor scion got a whole new front clip and shit.. 9k in damage. i won't complain since the insurance guy didn't know that it had 120k in mileage... WOOT! brand new xb again! i even cracked the plastic intake mani ! |
