Cycleops fluid-2 from CL [~$150 or less, missed the cyber monday deals I guess]

wheelbuilder has a nice powertap discount right now, thinking a custom GS Hed C2 [not C2+] rear for ~$850 [20% off]

http://www.wheelbuilder.com/custom-powertap-wheels/

so like $1k. The Wahoo Kickr is also only about $1k, but this way I'd get a wheel I could use in actual training w/power and even in a race if I wanted [C2+ wouldnt fit my cervelo P2C old school bike]. Well maybe it would but the wheel would be a bit sketchily-far-back in the dropout for my tastes [I have a 25mm flo-30 in there now and I wouldnt really want to race with it all the way back in the dropout near the edge and over-torqued]

is there a better way to go? I hear the fluid-2 trainer has an increasing drag curve over time so the power output is skewed if thats all youre using with zwift/trainer road/etc. I assume having an actual power meter would override that? Basically I'd just use the power sensor and not the mph/rpm/cadence with the bike trainer

Seriously though, why spend all the cash on powertap? Trainer Road works very well without a real power meter. They have done a great job at mapping the power curves of all the popular trainers. I'm positive you will get the same power accuracy as a powertap within like 0.5-1%. they've tested their kurt kinetic power mapping against popular power trainers.
I'd personally save all the extra cash and buy a kurt kinetic, spend the money you saved on the accessories you need like garmin usb dongle and a little intel NUC to hook up to your TV if you don't have a computer close by.

I had some saved links I'll dig up.

But a CL kurt kinetic, add their little "inride" meter, and for sub $400 you've got a "good enough".
Or like robby said, just use a trainer road compatible model(they list dozens I thought).

Found it,

Look at his review of the kurt kinetic (msrp $330, but I swear it's like 1/2 that on CL).
http://www.dcrainmaker.com/2014/11/2014-winter-trainer-recommendations.html#

Super ridiculous in depth "in-ride" review
http://www.dcrainmaker.com/2012/12/kinet...pth-review.html

I've heard it's hard to be kinetics reliability too.

I have a cycleops fluid 2, I don't really have much to say about it other than it works. I don't use any of that computer stuff so I can't comment.

Got the kickr setup mysef. Its pretty solid. Linked with trainerroad its a sweet setup. Id prefer an erg trainer before a power meter set up for indoor traing. Keeps it intresting

Leaning towards the Qubo digital smart b+ thing now

~$350

http://www.probikekit.com/turbo-trainers...CFQEGRQodO2IN-A

Has the FE-C so the software controls the resistance (erg mode)

Listed here as a smart trainer in zwift

new plan:

kinetic road machine 2.0 from CL [~$200 lol spendy]

and the ant+ USB stick [~$35]

going long grandma. Be prepared for zwift screenshots. Thinking about re-configuring my office to have my TT bike and this trainer in the back hehe. Maybe my crappy dual 24" screens will be fine for zwift

So more or less what I recommended.

p.s why ANT+? USB?

I'd just go a BT cadence/speed (or the inride)

i think that adapter is $200? [does provide more accurate power readings tho], but the zpower estimate w/o it is fantastically consistent [if innacurate] which is all that matters yea?

I thought Ant+/USB is what you need on a PC/Mac for zwift?

And what I recommended. Still best training tool for the cost.

And you need the ant+ usb stick for your ant+ speed and cadence sensor to communicate to the computer/software. That is how it figures out "virtual power".

You will be happy with the setup OP. If you want to increase resistance change a gear, screw that fe-c crap.

P.S. join the clusi trainerroad team, there are 5 whole members, none of which are active. It's a great team!

step 1 complete

whoever said trainers unbelievable suck was absolutely right. I had the windows open [~50F out] and the overhead ceiling fan set to like 9,000 rpm and I sweat ridiculous buckets in like 30m

on a sidenote the kinetic road machine is a solid piece of equipment

A big fan that can move a lot of air pointed at you is a necessity for riding a trainer, even in the middle of winter.

Did you buy a trainer tire? You will end up destroying whatever is on there right now.

yea unfortunately I have had my race wheel on it for a little bit [GP-4000s-II], I'm swapping to a beater wheel next time, was just test fitting it really.

I had just moved all my fans to the garage for the winter too heh

ordered a ant+ speed/cadence sensor and a USB ant+ doo-hickey today

hoping the software/immersive/gaming side of zwift/trainer road keep me motivated

after one session on it last night I was ready to put it back on CL lol

I liked mine in the garage, but definitely sweat buckets. Helps the garage was like barely 50 (and I took shirt off). No fan at that time though.

I used it for quality(intervals) of quantity(because kill me now).

yea theres no way I'm doing anything more than 30 minutes at a time unless theres some kind of sea change experience of how awesome the trainer is under software/apps

truthfully I just wanted to sorta simulate building up my base miles a bit

bike commuting I seem to be parked at 50/week $Because_Reasons

You will be able to do more than 30 once you have some software setup. Before I found trainerroad my trainer sessions for the winter totaled maybe 1.5 hours over 4-5 months. I find the software/tv really keeps you focused, I always have my eye on my power output to make sure it doesn't drop below the set point. Also helps that there are tons of videos, like the sufferfest, that have been mapped out to trainerroad. Zwift probably makes it even more interesting and easier to pass the time.

I fold the trainer and put the bike back in the garage when done

*comeatmebro

not sure I'll be using this in the summer tho [maybe 1x/week?]
