Just discussion. Any info, input? I routinely run a lot, including sprints and stairs. When we travel, we often walk long distances in cities. Hours of walking is common.

Today, we likely walked about 8 miles, maybe 10. I feel more sore and worse than when i run 5-7 miles. A flight of stairs makes my legs burn, yet i run thousands of stairs.

Walking is awesome for you, especially if you're highly active. Reduces inflammation by a lot. But, you don't *need* to walk more than about 30 minutes per day to get that benefit. Walking more than that can do exactly what happens to you. For me, it makes my feet ache like they've never been used if I'm walking around for a day or so.

My buddy asked about it and running actually burns slightly more calories than walking the same distance. I normally just get pinky toe blisters if I try to walk 6 miles or so rather than jogging it. Takes less steps to run than it does to walk.

Of course it's great for your overall health. For guys like you who regularly run and workout though...it's not doing much if anything to increase your fitness. Fantastic for active recovery though.

I'm just curious why it kicks my ass more than running seems to.

Probably a duration thing. Leisurely walking eight to ten miles while on vacation, for me, probably means I was on my feet for four to six hours - sometimes walking, sometimes standing and checking something out, sometimes standing in line, etc. I also can find it harder on me afterwards than running and imagine it just has to do with supporting your weight and being on your feet all that time. Running a half marathon, for comparison, requires more conditioning but is over in two hours or less if you run the whole thing at a respectable pace (I think it is around 9:15 for a two hour half).

Plus, you're using muscles that you aren't using when you're running (or at least not as much). Cheesy is right....duration is a big part of it as well.

and you are probably beat down from all your working out.

back when I was heavier into things a regular flight of stairs was pretty tiring thing

but I could go, swim, bike, ski, board whatever without issue for hours.

True, walking up one flight at work burns even though i run thousands of steps. Still walking seems easy, but even on a resting vacation, whoops me.

Hello Guys nice topic but i think that there a lots of difference between walking and running.Walking is mostly used the old men/women,According to my suggestion if you really want to lose your weight then running is the best and through daily routine running you can lose your weight in short period of time. Thanks!!

Ding Ding.
Make it more fun by throwing a backpack on!

It's not unusual to feel sore because you use your legs so differently, but it's a quick adjustment. I know when I switch hiking I always get a burn right below my glutes, I'm sure it's because I'm taking bigger strides and having to step up, vs running.

I'm the opposite. Sometimes on hikes I'll just start to jog. It's amazing how quick the ground moves by, not so fast you miss it, but just a nice exciting pace.
A good technical training run can be almost like mtn biking, you've got to plan ahead your moves, and move your body efficiently to maintain traction and momentum, and you know if you fuck up it could hurt decently.

I've ran with 40lbs+ of gear on my back at the end of hikes. Not because I was in a hurry, but I just like that pace.(oh and the beer in the car was a good motivator too).
