So I'm 31, 5'10" and 156 lbs. My body fat is currently at 15%. I have always had a hard time gaining weight. I have a friend that is a personal trainer and he recommended me some nutritional info and lifting schedule. However after 2 months of following his guidelines, I have yet to see a noticeable difference other than being more toned. I have not gained any weight whatsoever. My goal is to be around 175-180, sounds like a reasonable goal to me at least. So here is my breakdown:

Nutrition per day:
2643 cal
108 g protein
88 g fat
354 g carbs

I would prefer to go to the gym 3 on and 1 off. Is that too much lifting and not enough rest time? Or am I not training right? Here is my current training schedule:

Arms:
3 sets of pushups 20 reps - warmup
3 sets of incline barbell press - 2 sets of 4-6 and 1 set 12-15
3 sets bench press - 2 sets of 4-6 and 1 set 12-15
3 sets of dips - 10-12 reps
finish with 3 sets on any chest machine 10 reps

Legs:
3 sets leg extension 12-15 reps - warmup
4 sets squats - 2 sets of 4-6 reps - 2 sets 10-12
3 sets of leg press - 4-6, 10-12, and 12-15
3 sets of dumbell lunge - 10 reps each leg
3 sets of bodyweight squats - as many as I can do

Back:
3 sets lat pull down - 12-15 reps - warmup
3 sets lat pull down - 2 sets 4-6 and 1 12-15
3 sets bent over barbell rows - 2 sets 4-6 and 1 set 12-15
3 sets seated cable rows - same as above
3 sets single arm dumbell rows - same

On top of this, I take Assault before I work out and creatine on rest days. I also take a multivitamin and vitamin b1, b6, c, niacin, a, and magnesium. These were the vitamins he told me to take in addition to my multivitamin.

Sorry for the long post, I just wanted it to be detailed so I could get some good information. Thanks in advance for any help!

If you're not gaining weight, you need to eat more. I shoot for at least 1g of protein per lb of lean body mass at a minimum. This is just my opinion, but you might be getting too many cals from carbs and not enough from protein. I started at a 40/40/20 percent split, p/c/f and adjusted from there based on my body. You are at 16/54/30 right not. Why are you using such varied rep ranges on your sets? And just for a baseline, what are your lifts at currently? Bench, OHP, squat, dead.

Creatine daily, get on a better program, cut out lame machine lifts, add dead lifts into the routine. I'm not familiar with starting strength, but it sounds like it really works. I'd consider that plan.

Also, add more protein.

I have no idea why the varied rep sets. My buddy is a personal trainer and that is verbatim what he told me to do. I assumed that he knew what he was talking about.

I will add more protein to my diet and see if that helps at all.

I think your calories are fine. Maybe up the protein a bit to about the 120 range.

I think your programming sucks. Ditch that and get into Starting Strength or Madcow's 5x5.

Your training program sucks... Nutrient intake looks fine but as others have said, add more protein and drop some carbs...

If you're not gaining, you need to eat more...

i should clarify that gainin more than 2 pounds a month is likely pointless... and unless you are a TOTAL NOOB or on anabolics, the most muscle mass you can really add in a month is like 1 pound... so if you're training your ass off, and getting adequate protein amounts and in a caloric surplus, you're gonna add up to 1 pound of muscle (max, likely a little less), and 1+ pound of fat / water...

losing fat is easy though, so don't worry about 1 pound gains over a month... adding 2-3 pounds of fat per month is pointless but not the end of the world...

Since you're just starting out, you don't need to overthink this. The bottom line is if you aren't gaining weight you need to increase your calories.

I would up the daily calories to 3,200 and reassess in two weeks. For an easy fix, a protein shake with some oats twice a day would probably work. Force yourself to be consistent in hitting this goal everyday.

Your workout plan probably deserves a whole different thread.

said your more toned.... maybe your losing fat and gaining muscle? How are you measuring body fat?

are your lifts increasing?

starting strength will get you going, but seems like if I started my workout with 60 pushups, Id be a little bit gassed for the stuff I care about.

Ex hard gainer and I agree with everything you said. Creatine and Starting strength and... I'd add protein.
Whether it's whey, chicken, or just canned tuna. If you want to gain weight, don't be too afraid of fats,IF your protein intake is high enough. I mean if you're looking at 3k+ calories it can't be all protein. But protein is the first thing to consider for growing muscle. Pure calories will gain weight. You want to gain a bit of both.

156lbs, 2700cals, hard to believe thats not enough to get SOME gains, specially early on.

It is. That's a lot, especially at 31.

It could be but if he is a very active person his maintenance level could easily be 2500-2700...

all assumptions, but 15% body fat, 31, relatively unaware of workout regimens leads me to think he's probably not a marathon runner or recreational soccer player.

Id try to convert some of those carbs to protein, just to get protien to 150 or so, then focus on the lifts. Not sure its time to start stuffing face first thing out of the gate. Its a safer solution for those that have been in it for atleast a few months.

Do you know what he does for a living...? Weight training alone isn't enough to make your calorie needs increase that much...

Nothing wrong with bumping protein intake to closer to his body weight but if he's not gaining weight in that caloric intake it's obviously a maintenance level or close to it...

nope. but we are just going back and forth off 1 post with little relevant information, but if I was a betting man, 31, 154lbs 5'10, at 2800calories, diet wouldnt be my first guess for lack of gains.

I question the measurement anyway, body weight is a crappy measurement, specially for the first 2 months, he could easily gain muscle, lose fat, and stay the same lbs. And that would be pretty much the definition of success IMO.

You're right he could be doing both this early in the game if he's a noob...

And pictures are the best way to measure gains...

Agreed, but you'd have to be pretty damn active for that to be maintenance. It could also be measurement errors, both in weight and calories consumed.

Sorry, I completely forgot about this thread haha. I've started a new program from bodybuilding.com and have noticed a growth in muscle and gained 2 pounds since starting it.

As for changes, I've starting eating a lot more protein each day. I try to eat every 2-3 hours also.

No I'm not a marathon runner or soccer star lol but I am naturally lean and do play basketball a few times a week. As for work I'm a conductor (railroad) so I walk a ton throughout the day. Usually on gravel or sand so I would expect to maybe need a little higher caloric intake to make up for that.

Thanks for the help!

As long as he lifts heavy what's the problem with the routine?

Agree he needs to add deadlift and also shoulder press.
