So tomorrow is my first BJJ tournament. I started August 16th with zero grappling experience, so I am not expecting to tear up the field. I just want to see how I have progressed and get the first one out of the way. My daughter is competing too. She's 5 so I really don't know how she will handle it. She's been going for about 6 months and has no problem going up against bigger boys in practice. Hopefully there will be enough girls to make a bracket.

Should be interesting. How wild do these get or are they fairly tame and controlled?

From the videos I have seen of my teammates, they seem to be controlled but aggressive. We are fighting under IBJJF rules, so at my level I shouldn't see things like toe holds, heel hooks (illegal at all levels), etc.

Good luck!

I was very pleased at how well the NAGA event was managed and refereed. I saw one person get hurt but only because it was a bigger, older guy who's knee just gave out. I also saw a younger kid take a nap because he failed to tap during a guillotine choke but he was fine and the referee knew exactly how to handle it.

I watched videos before the event and when it was go time I was surprised how much better everyone was then the novices in the videos. People were not overly aggressive but most bigger guys wanted head control from stand-up.

I ran into a guy who locked his hands and just pressed on my chest when I pulled him into guard. This position blocks arm bars and triangle very effectively. When I walked my legs up his body to move for a triangle it also set up an easy pass. On Wednesday we practiced two counters. First, I practiced to make space and stand up by pushing away with your legs. Next, was to just grab an arm with an under hook and the his grab the back of his head to force him to move. Not sure if this is widely taught but maybe it will help.

Finally, what I learned most was to remember the simple defenses. Keep your elbows in and your hands on their hips when in their guard. Make sure your knee is on their side if they are in side mount. Maintain balance if you are on mount. Keep moving and don't stay flat. Don't panic and keep moving.

Also, on Wednesday I learned not to stack people or post on your tip toes or you might just break your toe.

That is some good advice. I am so used to being on my back in class that i am afraid I won't be aggressive enough or really know what to do if I end up on top. But that probably won't be an issue.

My daughter won in a tremendous comeback. She was down 7-0 with maybe 30-40 seconds left. Other kid had mount, she swept, mounted, then took his back and held on for a 10-7 win.

I didn't do as well. After some grip fighting, I went for a single leg and got it. We scrambled a bit and I got him in guard. We were off the mat so we reset to the middle. I couldn't break his posture, he passed, and took my back. He almost tapped me to an RNC, but I fought it off. Then he tried to RNC again and ended up neck cranking and I tapped. I think a neck crank is illegal at white belt, but I didn't say anything.

I can't believe how quick I gassed. I was even telling myself to breathe and I remember breathing in the match, but it was still hard.

That is awesome that your daughter pulled out that comeback.

Great for you that you had the balls to shoot the single. Sucks about the crank, I hate those because they make it feel like you knee is going to break. Too bad that you didn't get another match or two. Well now the hardest one is in the books and you know what to work on. I have rolled live for 6 minutes straight in training but that didn't prepare no for an actual match either, cardo is huge in grappling.

Yeah, I was told (and believe) that at this level, most people suck at takedowns and are even worse at takedown defense. So I figured why not? He didn't even attempt to sprawl.

I definitely need to step it up in training. I'm trying to get to the gym more than 4 times a week, but my scheduling doesn't jive. \:\(
