My friend convinced me to sign up for a half, it's in 3 weeks. I haven't ran over 10 miles since about 2008(?). The worst part is I've gotten very slow since last year. Now 10minute pace feels fast, so I'm looking at plus 2hours. Basically I'm jogging a 1/2 with a couple girls. GNSP?

Eh...any able bodied person can get through a half. You might pay for it the next day, but you'll do fine.
I couldn't prep for it in 3 weeks. No way, no how.

Run intervals OP. Run 8mins, walk 2 or whatever you are comfortable with. You will run the race quicker and feel more energy at the end versus non-stop running which will zap you by the end.

Oh I'll finish. But I've got a gimpy ankle. Like there's soft tissue on my calf, hard growth on my foot and my arch randomly hurts( though actually not as much when I run).
In 05-08 I ran probably 300+ a year, 10 like 100. Probably less than 70 the last few years. I did do a couple gnarly trail runs of 10 & 12k in June.
Im mainly worried about my foot/ ankle. That said, the second ankle bone I've developed had been there for over a year so I havent been too worried.
There's probably some pride as Ive wanted to break 1:40, but doubt I'll manage 2 this time.

Ps I did manage 7 last Thursday. No soreness afterwards, but it was a bit rough. I think I'll shoot for 9.5 this Thursday. Next week I'll only do short runs(out of country) and them do 11-ish once I get back. It's a steep ramp for sure.
I always say I need races to stay with it. I probably should have done the 10k this time. Especially because I like that distance. But my friend was doing the half and I wanted to support her, I've never ran that far with someone before. She says she's like 2:30 pace, so it should be easy in that aspect. But then again running (jogging) for 2.5 hours is not the best.
Either way, as long as I don't further gimp my foot, it's good to be doing another half. This will be my first one post 30, and I'm sure it'll be my slowest by a huge margin. Then again, it's the first time I've ran a half while being strong(not by csi standards), it's tough balancing fitness.

FUCK running. There are so much better ways to get into shape without pounding your joints away.
depends on body type and mechanics.

How so? In what case of mechanics and body type does it make running less impactive than swimming? well there is zero impact in swimming, which is why I never compared it to swimming. Now I'm confused...I said there are better ways than running and you responded with it depends on mechanics....
you said it pounds your joints away, I said that depends on body type and mechanics.

What is wrong with impact? I run all the time. Impact is good for the bones. Most people hate running because it's one of the hardest forms of exercises and your average non-runner couldn't make it a mile. This. There was a study some time ago that concluded runners have higher bone density than cyclists. The impact was found to strengthen the bones and possibly reduce the risk of osteoporosis in the future. Same with strength training. The same things that make us stronger tear us down.
Cyclists are noted for low bone density due to the lack of impact actually. Something to consider.
I mean, sitting at our desk causes no impacts. What's the fucking point? Maybe it's youthful naivete, but I'm going to keep running, keep lifting, and keep hucking myself on my snowboard as long as possible. I've never had a major tear(AC in shoulder, serious sprain) or break, and it's not like I haven't tried and fallen a lot. One day will it hurt more? yeah, but it's better to hurt physically than spirtually.
I like running, I think most people don't understand what it takes to enjoy it. But I like most things that don't come easy, which for me includes almost all athletics. I think people that hate running need to sack up. No it's not easy at first, but eventually it gets easier, so you go further, or faster, or whatever...

Finished. I did the first 8 mile with my friend and her 60 y/o dad. Did the last 5 at my own speed. Not setting any records for sure. I was 30+ minute behind my priors, but not bad considering how little training I've done, and I had a week of drinking 100+ beers in the middle. I had a huge amount in the tank, I'm pretty sure the last 1.1 miles was sub 8 and I had a full sprint down the end.
I actually don't hurt that bad. I've developed a very gentle slow stride with, so I can push along with out too much difficulty.
And it was a sunny weekend in wine country(I had a lot on Saturday) vs a rainy weekend in Portland. My wife managed to do her first 10k with about only 3 runs under her belt in the last 4 months. Both of us are happy we did it, even if our times suck for us(not like we're normally fast).

Post up the times, bitch! Congrats on your finishes, regardless. No effing way. It's above 10 minute pace, let's leave it at that.
Normally I think I'm a little slower than the pace of your wife. (low-mid 8s?)
I really really enjoyed this race though. Way more pleasant than most(helps it didn't snow/sleet).
