I have one but I've heard two different camps on this. Mind you, I haven't lifted heavy since the stone ages. When I was lifting regularly, I would go without for normal work out days but I would use one for squats and deads on PR or Max days.

What does CSi think?

I haven't used one in a long time, but I don't lift super heavy anymore. I would work on getting your form perfect and getting pretty strong again before starting to use them.

I think belts are a useful tool for heavy lifting.

and straps on the squats? lol. (j/k dude)

I wear one every now and again but it's not really to help me exert more force in my midsection like they're intended to do. It just helps me check my back on certain things like presses and squats.

Never used one. Deaded 500 without one. Don't see the point at all.

How does wrapping a fat belt help your workout?

I don't know. Supposed to keep you from shitting your guts out. Or severely herniating yourself. They seem to have gone out of favor in the last decade or so. But I saw a guy at the gym wearing one the other day. So I was wondering what y'all thought.

I think it's a tool/crutch some people rely on them too much, I like to try a heavy lift with and without to see if it makes any difference or if it's just some mental stigmata that was programed in my brain from high school football.

374lb deadlift
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TNBcGL0q4Pw

419 deadlift
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IDgPSTo7qHU

When my stomach was a lot bigger I could totally feel the difference the belt made when lifting weights, now that I'm smaller however and it digs into my ribs, it actually hampers a lot of my lifts so I try to work without it as much as possible. I keep it close by just in case, I dunno like I said it was programmed into my head like crank and yank on cleans back in high school so it's hard to get rid of.

But I'm using it a lot less these days.

in this video of me doing clean and jerks I try without the belt and the last attempt I bring the belt out.

http://youtu.be/i_2Njg4IE48

without the belt I think I wasn't as explosive as I could've been from the floor up, that's more of a leg power thing so I adjusted the second time around. I'm really not comfortable push pressing without a belt because I feel myself folding backwards so once I feel that I ditch with the belt.

with the belt I was a bit more explosive from the bottom going up on my clean.

Looks like a cool gym Wayne... What's your goal with this kind of lifting...? I've never got into any OLs mainly cause none of the gyms in my area even allow it... Even the ones that somewhat cater to BBs don't have an area to do these kinds of lifts...

So I assume you just do this for power and strength, not so much a body building thing...?

For what it's worth I don't question your ability to lift. I know you know how to lift and the type of lifting you do is similar to what I do. It the type of lifting I recommend for building actual strength.

It's just been a very, very long time for you. I think now that you're doing this sort of lifting, you will make serious changes to your body. I'm rooting for you and will give you a bro-fist when you're ripped. Keep it up.

I know this is a spin off but since its my thread I'll do it any way. I'm un-convinced that only doing 5 or 6 lifts 5x5 is going to give me the strength and endurance that I need for my job. I did 3x10 deadlifts today at 140 lbs. I did all 10 perfect form and will move up in weight next week. I also did the same amount for squats. Then moved over and did the leg machines. I feel like I had a great work out and feel like I will increase my weight as I go. Also, like OB1, I only have the two squat racks, but I don't want to be throwing the weight around.

Compound lifts are all you need. This is how you build real strength and endurance.

Leg machines and shit are wack yo

I strictly do compound lifts and body-weight exercises and running. It's all you need.

Same here. Everything I do involves body weight or iron only. Throw in some competitive sport or interval training (stairs, sprints, spin) to really get the anaerobic side working and you'll be good.

I can't recall where I read the article but it broke down why a 3-5 rep scheme was better for building actual strength rather than sets of 3x10.

something along the lines of if you were a trashman and had little to no strength, but your job required you to move 200lb trash bins all day eventually your body will adapt and you will no longer have to adapt to moving that weight around. But you're not going to get strong from doing it.

so doing high repetitions of something your body will just quickly adapt to it and compensate, and make power and strength where needed on tap.

Where as lifting heavy for 3 reps is enough to work the muscle to grow. I'm probably quoting it all wrong.

and that's the risk involved with over / under grip... obviously unless you have grip like AP (apparently), you pretty much need to go this route to continue to go up in weight...

and the dude that straight fainted, the fucking camera person didn't budge an inch... he went face first into the rack and it was like "ehhhh"... wow...

it has it's advantages but also it's disadvantages...

the biggest con is it's straight up fucking boring, and if you don't love to squat, it kinda sucks too... i used it, stuck with it, and got results from it... but at this point i'm not sure i want to be going to into the gym every other day getting under the bar... i can hammer my legs once a week and get solid results that way as well...

the biggest advantage is it DOES make you stronger, you have a set routine, so if you need that routine to stay focused on your progress this is a great program, especially if you are unable to put your own split together...

Ya I'm really leaning the same way. If it's too heavy for me to grip and I need straps, then why am I doing it? It has no relevance to my job or daily life. Plus I'm not going to wear a belt at work to lift shit. I'm sold.

Yep. I don't use gloves because the ones I have reduce my grip IMO, but I don't see a huge issue with using gloves. It's not like they really help you lift special weight.

Using gloves will actually cause more friction for high volume movement, sweat, and guess what. More callouses. It also hampers improving your grip strength since you're gripping a bar through a surface.

Just saying, if it works for you then by all means but food for thought.
