I have been riding with SPD-SLs for 2 years now and I still have a hell of a time getting out of them, even all the way loose. My ankles just don't seem to rotate in a proper fashion to get out quickly. I've even rotated the cleats a bit to get a few more degrees so I don't need to rotate my foot as much.

Anyone have similar issues? What are you riding and how do you like them? I think it's about time for me to move on since I find them so frustrating and after a couple years they haven't gotten any better. Anyone in the market for some used 105 spd-sls?

I've done all my training and racing on 105 R540's. Pretty much the cheapest out there, but work fine for me.. Then again, I don't do a lot of clipping in and out since I mostly ride on the trainer or in races here I get on and stay on.

As for easy-clipping, the Look Keo stuff might be what you're looking for.

Lol--I'm the wrong guy to ask!

I use SPD M520 MTB pedals (on a road bike--the horror!!!) My shoes are Specialized Sport MTB.

Double-sided and a breeze to get in and out of. A decent amount of "float" in the cleat while it's engaged, too.

I like the MTB shoes because I can walk in them while I'm off the bike. Nice for those long rides where there's a break and/or I want to go into a convenience store mid-ride.

That said, I'm sure there are plenty of road shoes that are compatible with the SPD mountain cleats.

I had platform SPD's on my MTB and they were a dream. I'm pretty disappointed in the SLs.

Eddie - I probably won't be getting rid of them as soon as this weekend. I'll probably head down to my LBS in the coming weeks and see if I can find something that will work better for me. I'll check out those KEOs.
