I'm a HUGE yoga advocate. The more centered and limber you are, the better--especially as you get older.
Learn your limits early on and work within them. Don't try to go all crushgroove out of the gate. There's "good" pain (the next-day aches) and "bad" pain (stabbing, sharp agony).
Form, form, form. The second your back is doing too much work, you're screwed.
Even if you don't do the yoga thing, stretch and warm up. Then stretch afterwards and/or do a good cooldown.
Protein within 20 minutes of stopping to help your muscles start healing faster.

Yoga is on my shortlist of things to do when I can afford the classes.
DVDs, man! Rodney Yee is the MAN.

Don't jump in with both feet. Start slow. bingo. people try to go to hard to early and to fast. you have to ramp up the weight and mileage slowly
