The scale doesn't lie and various life changes last year saw me gain damn near 30 pouunds last year. Mainly a job that had me driving a car constantly through the night (repo), and my final semester in college where I basically replaced sleep with coffee and fourthmeal. I'm 6' tall and had finally broken into the 190's for the first time since high school in 2010, now I'm up to 225 as of this morning.

I've tried to start exercising regularly several times over the last several years but never make it past a couple weeks or months at best before I either get a nasty chest cold that I don't want to run with or injure/reinjure myself to the point I can't really run or ride a bike for a couple weeks and therefore lose all momentum.

Other than starting out slow, what are ways to keep from injuring myself and not getting dog sick for a couple weeks after a couple weeks in? I have a weak left ankle from spraining it running a few years ago, and respraining it in a dirt bike crash, and a left shoulder I can't sleep on recently due to several hard motorcycle crashes on that side. Regarding just being sick, should I just tough it out and scale back and keep running or wait for it to go away?

Not an expert, so I'll ask a few q's. Do you take a multi-vitamin? Get plenty of rest? If you are at a gym, you can use a Bosu ball and work on strengthening the stabilizing muscles in your leg.

I'm a HUGE yoga advocate. The more centered and limber you are, the better--especially as you get older.

Learn your limits early on and work within them. Don't try to go all crushgroove out of the gate. There's "good" pain (the next-day aches) and "bad" pain (stabbing, sharp agony).

Form, form, form. The second your back is doing too much work, you're screwed.

Even if you don't do the yoga thing, stretch and warm up. Then stretch afterwards and/or do a good cooldown.

Protein within 20 minutes of stopping to help your muscles start healing faster.

Yoga is on my shortlist of things to do when I can afford the classes.

No multivitamins. I sleep well enough, especially now that I have a new mattress, 6-8+ hours a night.

No gym membership (yet). I'm trying to follow the couch to 5k plan, supplementing with crunches and pushups and/or spending an hour at work tossing 30pks and cases around in the cooler.

Tips on a good cooldown? The warm up and stretches, I basically do what I did when I ran cross country in high school, but back then cool down consisted of scarfing down a couple pounds of food, showering, and getting to work in a half an hour.

Injuries happen often because of fatigue. Start slow and like gamby says cool down and stretch . Good luck

Don't jump in with both feet. Start slow.

Yeah...I went through those initial hurdles when I started my run/tri training. I got overzealous (dont we all) and took on too much too quickly. Lucky for me there was nothing that sidelined me for longer than a few days, but I did learn to listen to my body and to know when it's just aches from training, and when it was something more serious.

One thing that helped me immensely was swimming and biking. It gave me something else to satisfy my obsession for getting a workout in while allowing for recovery.
