started at the gym today, and after seeing way too many old man buttholes in the locker room, i started my journey into improving. even though i had lost 50lbs in the past year, i never really realized how out of shape i am.

my goals right now are to tone up and shape some upper body. my plan, well, schedule really only permits about 3 times a week for about an hour.

today i did a mini set using the hybrid machines of 3x10 of 90lbs on the chest press, lats, abs, tri's, repeat then hit an eliptical. but i only made it 5 minutes on the eliptical before i rubberized and then i could only imagine that i looked like gumby tumbling down stairs.

saturday i am planning some lower body. for bmx i need leg strength to get out of the gate and endurance to spin around the track, so presses are on the list and probably more eliptical to try to push my wall out farther.

any tips from the typical buff csi'ers?

I'm not buff, but I vote for free weights over machines. Start really low with the weight and learn good form. Nothing wrong with benching the bar for reps at first. Starting Strength is a great program.

Starting Strength and open the door an ago running. If you like to bike, I typically go biking and make sure my route has a lot of steep hills.

i like biking, but my bike isn't exactly biking for fitness or any amount of distanced prepared. low slung, single speed, low hard seat. built for racing for 45 seconds at a time.

plus it's snowing out.

Skipping rope is amazing for cardio/stamina.

Leg extensions are great for cycling (BMX is cycling, so yeah)

Squats, obviously.

Take a yoga class that focuses on lower body/core. It'll help your riding bigtime--srsly

These are old fashioned but maybe try wind sprints and burpees (do they still call them that?). Get used to your body and how it reacts first before entering a lifting program with weights. Then work into a starting strength or similar type program.

If it's above 40, I hit the roads on my singlespeed and just do hill intervals. Epic for stamina. I have a couple of 10-mile loops that are pretty hilly and they kick my ass.

If not in the winter, something to think about for the spring.

Yoga is no joke, son!

I started doing it again because I realized I needed way more flexibility in my legs.

I do a few different DVDs from Rodney Yee (the Yoga Now box set and Yoga For Athletes).
