This thing is awesome! I might order one even though I'll probably never use it. Reminds me of something from Terminator 2.

Available at bosstoolsupply.com for anyone who is interested.

Actually I've never had good luck with that style of oil filter wrench. I usually use the curve 'pliers' style or the band-style.

That thing was my best friend when changing oil! I used it on almost all filters I couldn't get them off with a rag + brakecleaner. It needs to be a good one though.... and in two different sizes.

I did 90+ oil changes a day. Ugh, I hated that job, but it had its fun moments.

I have to use my hand while wearing a latex glove, just like a I did on my last Mazda. They don't give you much room to work with.

I picked up the ones that look like a giant plastic socket, and they fit the filter perfectly. The belt ones are useless when the filter is stuck.

A little oil on the rubber seal means never having to use a tool. When I did the first change on the F250, I had to destroy the filter by hammering a screwdriver through it to get it off - which sucked as it's a huge filter with nearly a quart capacity. Least fun oil change ever.

cheers,
scott

I did a lot of oil changes for several years on big rigs, diesel heavy equipment, later on cars and trucks.

This cup style is nearly worthless since you need one for every size of oil filter. I used this on my Honda.... one time since it's way more awkward than a band or pliers.

Similarly to the OP'S filter wrench.. it takes a long time and you also need to use another tool with it- ratchet or ratcheting end wrench.

This band style is just the best for severely tight, HUGE filters on stationary generators and heavy equipment- I'm talking Baldwin B2 and B99 filters, about 3-4x the size of a Ford / Motorcraft FL1-A. Its also pretty fast, second only to the pliers for removal. As long as you don't buy a cheap brand they last for a very long time and you only need a few sizes... when I worked as an auto tech I had two sizes (didn't need the "Giant" size). Additionally this is the only wrench I know of that lets you tighten a filter w/out damaging it. I use these on hydraulic spin-ons, water separator and fuel spin-on Racor's, and in the pump/filtration systems on thrust bearings and pedestal bearings, where you need to index and tighten the hell outta the filter. Also some big diesels you need to snug the filter a little more than hand-tight, or are working in a very confined space (say, when you have a main filter and a bypass filter tucked right inside the frame rail and directly next to each other) I have never crushed a filter during installation with the band type.

And last but not least the pliers style which is great at quick-change oil places- kept this stored on the oil bowser (drain tank). Only one size, adjusts like channel lock pliers, gets into most really nasty confined spaces. Fast, easy, bites the filter for no-slip removal.

I've had one for a while, it works like a charm--assuming you can get it to sit flat on top of the filter. Also helps if you can wrap your fingers around the "claws" when cranking down. Beats the crap out of the "band" type wrenches.

I always oil my filter gasket and hand-tighten, but most of the time can't hand-loosen them for removal.

Even better is the locking plier type that uses a mechanism similar to vice-grips. It (along with a bicycle seat post I used as a cheater bar) was the only way to get a stuck oil filter off. I can't believe that a free oil change at the dealer could cause so much misery.

M3 has a drop in filter on the top - it's about the easiest oil change you'll ever have to do.....

..... besides adding in the 7 quarts of oil

band style is the best for anything other than the small honda filters. i picked up the spring and finger type posted above for that, it works ok, the biggest issue w/ it is the ratchet comes through the bottom and interferes w/ the grabbing parts.

I've tried many varieties over the years and think my favorite are the big pliers or vice-grips. I've resorted to 'big ass screwdriver stabbing through filter creating a huge mess and requiring an hour of painful rotation' a couple times on older cars. \:\(
